Lara Croft is back on Xbox this week with a remaster of her original trilogy by Aspyr. Before we get into what other critics thought about Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered, be sure to check out our review here on Pure Xbox first.
While we didn't necessarily agree with every decision made in the remaster collection, it still does a good job retaining the feel of the original trilogy and is well worth a look for longtime fans of the series.
Now, here's what other critics had to say:
Push Square (8/10)
"Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered Starring Lara Croft is a lovingly crafted compilation which may set a new standard for PS1 re-releases moving forward. Based on the original source code, this trilogy flawlessly reframes three iconic PS1 puzzle platformers as you remember them – warts and all. While you will need patience to navigate this trilogy of globe-trotting escapades, the upgraded art style sticks closely to Core Design’s intended vision and it’s a genuine pleasure to experience these 90s classics on all-new hardware."
PC Gamer (78/100)
"Tomb Raider Remastered is an impressive and authentic update. Too authentic in some places, though."
Xbox Achievements (80/100)
"As difficult as it might be to go back and discover those games you once loved haven't dated as well as you might have hoped, Tomb Raider I-III Remastered is a wonderfully faithful and reverential collection of three classics, and nigh-on essential for new players and misty-eyed nostalgics alike."
Hardcore Gamer (7/10)
"Tomb Raider I-III Remastered finds itself in a tough spot because what it aims to do is replicate the original trilogy with all of its content on modern hardware and it does it well. The biggest problem it faces is that the new coat of paint is largely just that — the core gameplay is still rooted in early 3D jankiness and feels awkward to play now — and in some ways, it's harder to wrap your mind around it now since no control scheme offered up feelings as natural as anything featured in a Tomb Raider game since the PS2 days onward."
RadioTimes (60/10)
"These are still great games and this is a nice way to play them, but don’t go expecting a sleek and beautiful package that feels like a modern game. If you want to play a truly modern Tomb Raider, you might be better off with the Square Enix reboot trilogy from a few years back."

The tank controls are flawless once you get the hang of them and you understand how the game and the maps were designed around them.
honestly what i got from this is that if someone wants to genuinely play the classic in its full original glory with just updated visuals - this game is it . so i think it’s a 10/10 for that alone & i believe that some people actually like “remasters” to be as 100% authentic as possible to the original (with just better frame rate and graphics) , and nothing else . if people want otherwise , i thought that’s what “remakes” were for like tomb raider anniversary ??
I'll buy it on sale about 20 quid anyone know how much for it now couldn't be full price
@eire-shabba £25
Wow that Radio Times review is one of the worst I've ever seen. Who knew that a game from the 90's might not play like a game made 20 years later.
I'm going to be jumping back into these with tank controls and enjoying not having map markers or yellow paint to hold my hands around the levels
Huge fan of the originals. I picked this up after being impressed by a couple of videos. You know what’s nice about it, Lara isn’t constantly waffling on to herself like modern day characters do. There’s something special about the lack of music and voice, it adds to the atmosphere of the game. Combat is rough but the platforming is still fantastic with the tank controls.
At the price it released its worth for the nostalgia value and the photo mode alone. Was afraid of this one but turn out ok in the end.
I watched Digital Foundry's video, made by John Linneman. If it was by Thomas Morgan I could not have watched more than 30 seconds. Anyway, watch the video. It gives a lot of information about the quality of the remasters.
@InsaneWade Tomb Raider Legend was also the first game on a Nintendo console, if I remember well, or was there a Tomb Raider for Game Boy Color? It wouldn't suprise me.
@InsaneWade I remember that it was the first proper 3D game I ever saw because it was released before Super Mario 64 here. I saw it in a shop running on Saturn, its debut platform.
