As the discussion rages on about whether Xbox might be planning a new strategy for first-party exclusives in the future, the former God of War director David Jaffe has been debating it quite heavily with his followers on social media.
Jaffe has a controversial viewpoint on it as well, as he believes that a new exclusive strategy - one that would be centered around timed exclusivity as well as Xbox Game Pass - could ultimately be very desirable for the brand.
Here's what he had to say about it on Twitter earlier in the week:
When questioned about how this would help Xbox "retain and gain more third party support", Jaffe suggested that Xbox Game Pass is the key focus for Microsoft in this situation, and consoles might not even exist in 5-10 years:
"Because Xbox is establishing Game Pass as Netflix for games and that is all that matters to them. They don't care about losing console sales if Game Pass grows. Because in 5-10 years, there will be no consoles, only services."
"It's hard to know when it will gain enough traction to be viable. The tricky part is, many of us have experienced streaming direct to TV working wonderfully in our homes. And once you have that experience, it's hard to imagine the future as anything else."
As hinted at above, Jaffe did essentially admit that 5-10 years is just an estimate and it's impossible to tell when consoles might eventually disappear. In our opinion, we'd be surprised if it happened this soon, and we're hoping that even in 10 years' time, Xbox will still be producing some kind of new console hardware!
What do you think of the God of War creator's comments here, anyway? Whether you're in agreement or not, we definitely think it's an intriguing take on the situation! Let us know your thoughts down below.

Bring GoW to gamepass and then we talk
He is talking *****. Did you not understand that?
Is this the one that made the good God of War games or the bad newer ones?
That's what we've been saying.
If Microsoft goes multiplat they can simply focus on software and have a larger audience.
They could in turn save money by not having to do R&D, production, and distribution, for Xbox consoles.
Exiting the console hardware game just makes sense for Microsoft given how poorly the console sales compared to the competition.
I don’t care about what games go to PlayStation or Switch as long as I can continue to play my games. I have been playing Spider-Man and Xbox Cloud Gaming on the Steam Deck as well and I love the convenience. In the end, it’s a plastic box. As long as I can play the games I want to play on a plastic box, then I will be happy.
Consoles will eventually disappear. It won't be for a while yet, but I imagine this is what Microsoft is prepping for right now.
This is the thing with the so-called "console war". It's all seemingly based on which platform sells more hardware, but ultimately, it won't matter in the long run. Xbox isn't going anywhere and, if anything, it's likely setting itself up to be an absolute juggernaut in the gaming space, more than it already is.
Xbox bringing its games to other platforms doesn't mean it's "conceding defeat" as many are mistakenly claiming. It's simply pivoting to a much different business strategy, like Nintendo did with the Wii. It's not about beating Sony. It's about making as much money as possible. That's all.
"They don't care about losing console sales if Game Pass grows"
As the Spartans said "IF"
Here is a question that I do not have the information to answer with 100% guarantee, which is integral to the whole topic. Maybe somebody else does and could chime in?
Would the increase in 1st party game sales on other platforms like PS and Nintendo, offset the potential loss of 3rd party game sales, dlc and microtransactions on their store if less people purchased stuff from the xbox store and xbox consoles in general. Microsoft make 30% on everything.
If I was to guess I would say no, not at all.
I think its something Jaffe and most other people completely miss in their calculations
if the film you want to watch isn't on Netflix, you can at least buy it on DVD. if the game you want to play isn't on gamepass, and there are no consoles, how do you access it? Unless every game developed is put onto the service, it would cripple independent studios, wouldn't it?
I just don't see there not being a box that you can use to purchase games and store them?
also more on topic, if xbox stop with consoles, is there a guarantee Nintendo and Sony let them put gamepass on their machines? Don't most gamepass subs come from xbox owners??
@CharlieChooChoo
The good ones that made Kratos a videogame icon. Gotcha.
@Sakai and unless the games are as good as, or better, than Sony first party games, would they sell enough for this to even make sense?
@CharlieChooChoo He does talk a LOT of crap, but in between he does have some pearls of wisdom.
Agreed he's not the sole creator of GoW or Kratos, there are several videos on that including a really old one with a baby faced Jaffe and Corey Barlog and a scarily similar looking Stig Assumssen (Director of GoW 3 and Jedi: Fallen Order/Survivor games)
So, he's saying that MS, the richest company in the world, needs the money from PS5 ports to hire "good product developement managers"? Like, what's stoping them from doing it right now? Money obviously isn't the problem....
@CharlieChooChoo Yes! Those old games blow. I played GoW 3 and it was easily the worst AAA game I have ever played. As a longtime Nintendo fan it felt like what I imagined Playstation/Xbox games to be like because it puts visual spectacle way ahead of making a fun game. The camera is always way too zoomed out for cinematic framing and it makes the game way worse. Also that version of Kratos sucks.
This guy's opinion should be important to me because ... ?
@InterceptorAlpha Unfortunately, that will lead to a monopoly in the "premium console" market that I am not exactly sure will spell out good things for the consumer.
When Atari left the market, there was still equal competition between more than one console maker. When Sega left the market, there was still equal competition between more than one console maker.
Nintendo has carved itself as both a primary and additional console maker in many gamers eyes (i.e. most people will buy a Switch as well as a PlayStation and/or Xbox). If Microsoft bows out completely, there is no "equal competition between more than one console maker."
As much as PlayStation fans beat their chest about being the dominant "winner", Sony still has to put its best foot forward to maintain that dominance. If it has no one to really put it in check, why even bother spending millions to get bigger millions?
Will Gamepass grow outside of increased Xbox console sales? Is it on anything other than Xbox, limited pc and tv? Console sales are key to Gamepass subs. Unless something dramatic happens. If Xbox exclusives come to PlayStation I might as well own a PlayStation cause the inverse sure isn’t happening.
If Game Pass is the primary focus and most of Game Pass users are console users, then how do they suppose they are going to grow Game Pass with dwindling console sales? I get that platforms will change and XBox has always been at the front of innovations but its hard to see the steps to get from A to C.
@InterceptorAlpha And what about Xbox users who have invested hundred or thousands into Xbox hardware, games and services? We just f*ck ourselves?
What he forgets with cloud, is why at the moment would you go with Xbox's cloud offering in a decade's time over PlayStation's, if PS has the Xbox games and more?
Unless the porting is strictly console-only and they're biding their time for cloud - but then it'd still be a risk as those who are in the PS ecosystem from the PS5/PS6 would still likely stick with PS cloud over Xbox...
People who keep saying thag consoles will disappear probably thought we would be driving flying cars by now.
You can play STEAM games on any PC, but people still buy steamdecks
I think you can have timed exclusives, gamepass and a well tuned dedicated box can still sell. Especially something like the Series S. I use mine pretty much like a gamepass box, buying very few other games. And it is great for that, and a heck of a lot cheaper than a gaming PC.
I don't think this is the death of xbox consoles
@GamingFan4Lyf I never said it would be good for consumers.
Only that it would be good for Microsoft. Which at the end of the day is the direction a business would go.
@IOI That's normally how those things go, yes. Microsoft did exactly that with Windows Phone. Then Windows Mobile before that.
Just FYI: you're talking to the the person with a 18 year subscriber badge on his profile, with two Series X's, and has had an Xbox since 2001. So be sure to direct your frustrations appropriately.
@Ashadelo It is not worth it. I completed GoW 2018 on PC, the best version. As a result, I have no interest in playing Ragnarok. People do accept that exclusivity can promote the perception of an air of superiority and desirability. Rarity versus abundance.
@Sakai I think GamePass has drove down individual purchases like that. Thats what they're seeing and they really are only focused on GamePass succeeding, so its a win win for them.
@CharlieChooChoo
Yeah, the fun games vs the boring wannabe movies. Thanks for the clarification.
@Ken_Kaniff you could be right, but it's more than just game sales they make 30% from, even microtransactions etc on FTP games. Its alot of money.
How many gamepass subs would you need to replace 30% of everything on their platform, I guess it would be an absolutely crazy number
@InterceptorAlpha
It’s hard to see how that makes financial sense. Even if all they did this generation was match last gen’s nearly 60 million sales that’s a massive revenue stream to give away. Not just the hardware sales but peripherals and the licensing fees they get from every single game sold on Xbox. It could also potentially cost them a shedload of Game Pass subscribers.
I know bigwigs are always going to push for a gaming metaverse, but as others have mentioned…Sony first.
@Syndrome xbox will get a budget from Microsoft, this 69 billion they spent on abk was microsofts business plan, nothing to do with xbox as such , you didn't really think they spent all that money to please xbox owners, by filling game pass with them and nothing more, did you? Microsoft have made some really bad decisions in the past , whos to say this isn't another.
@electrolite77 if. Microsoft does this, then they will be strictly a publisher.
In that scenario Gamepass will undoubtedly be brought to other platforms.
Hardware and licensing fees are drops in the bucket compared to what they'd made from having Gamepass on Playstation. Especially when in general, there's not much a return, if any, on hardware.
1. Does anyone actually like the streaming landscape of TV Movies? Is it really better than the old DVD model? You have access to less and less and you spend most of your time in discovery instead of watching content. How many people jump in and out of subs because there is no new content they want?
2. How many decent games has come out of XBox directed studios in the past 10 years? How many games have THEY actually produced that you would want to be a subscriber to have access to? Are you willing to pay $204 a year for access to games you could buy for $15 and the occasional new game you like?
As a consumer its starting to look like the value long term isn't great. I could spend $200 on games per year and not have to hope that the games i want are on GP. If I don't care about having the latest game i can get a lot of games for $200 per year. Especially if I'm not into multi-player. And if the game you like leaves game pass, you are going to end up paying more. I feel like you have to be a particular type of gamer with at least a semi-significant income to find the value. I have a hard time seeing this as something a casual person would pay $200 a year long term.
It is telling that Tom Warren is telling everybody to relax and Jez Cordan who has written articles about it being a worrying situation is now saying he is no longer worried. A lot of the insiders are no longer raising their pitchforks.
It makes me think they found out what the message is for next week and its not that big of a deal.
Question is, @InterceptorAlpha, if Xbox cease to make consoles, and Sony does not permit the Game Pass on their console, where do the majority play Xbox games? You seem to be assuming that most have the capability to stream games, but on what?
@Fiendish-Beaver There's no reason to believe Sony would prohibit Gamepass on Playstation as both EA Access and Ubisoft+ are already on Playstation. Sony would certainly allow it if Xbox was no longer competition and their cut was right.
And seeing as how smaller companies like EA and Ubisoft were able to negotiate a cut with Sony, there 0.00% chance Microsoft wouldn't be able to.
@InterceptorAlpha There's every reason to believe Sony would prohibit game pass on PlayStation in its current format as if it includes third part games then that will directly affect Sony's sales of any games that are included on game pass, it would also make it direct competition for PS Plus. The only way they could maybe allow it is it it's first party Xbox Game Studios games only. The only problem with this is reducing 90% of the games available significantly reduces that value of game pass so the sub price would need to be adjusted. Would a heavily reduced priced game pass on PlayStation really be an attractive prospect for Microsoft to offer?
I know this guy is a bit of a schmuck but I 100% agree with him here.
Soooooo many people out there want Sony to have a monopoly its insane.
I wouldn’t care if they made a portable console with oled , Bluetooth and Dolby partnership but no Xbox in general is sad being I would want one day to play with my son
@InterceptorAlpha
There’s very little chance of Gamepass being on PlayStation or Nintendo for that matter.
Third party licensing fees are a huge business, they’re basically free money. As much as Sony get praised for their exclusives, revenue from third party games is a much more important revenue stream for them as seen in the filings for the ABK court case.
It’s possible to make money from system hardware and peripherals which are also hardware is another revenue stream with a very high mark up.
The only times anyone has thrown in a decent Video Game hardware business has been when they’ve had to because the company is about to go under like with Sega/SNK/Atari. That’s the only time it makes sense, and MS aren’t in that position.
I should have worded my comment regarding Game Pass on the PlayStation better, @InterceptorAlpha, as I have elsewhere. What I meant is, Sony will not allow the Game Pass that we see now on their platform. It is as simple as that. For Game Pass to be permitted on to a PlayStation it would only be allowed to feature Xbox first party games, and probably not even the likes of Call of Duty (if it even goes on the service anyway) because Sony make too much money from sales of the game to lose that to a subscription service.
So, a pared down Game Pass would probably only feature about 25% of the games that it currently does. Thus, if Ubisoft's service costs £14.99 a month (which I just don't know how they can justify, but that is another matter!) and EA costs £19.99 for an entire year, what would Game Pass cost after losing 75% of its content, and just how attractive would that be to gamers? And more importantly, after handing Sony 30% of the revenue from sales of Game Pass (maybe less, but that is what Sony charge for games), just how much would Xbox make on the service? Would they still be able to sustain day one releases on the services for their big AAA games? If not (and that is the most likely outcome) then the service is degraded still further, meaning it is even less enticing to gamers and will garner still less revenue.
So, would Sony allow a version of Game Pass on their system? Probably. Would it be one that gamers would flock to as they do the current Game Pass? Probably not...
I don’t know how Microsoft went from supposedly buying up a monopoly to just throwing in the towel so fast.
They should have lowered the price of the systems by $100 undercutting Sony and never increased their game pass subscription price this generation.
@RBRTMNZ i agree bro, nintendo is like god. they can crap gold and make quality easily. theres no need for sony or xbox, when we all have our handheld 1990 games .
@nomither6 Reread my comment carefully. I’m not being critical of whatever plastic box is making you feel the need to be hostile.
@RBRTMNZ plastic boxes are how i receive a lot of my goods , i love them & can’t be hostile towards them
