We've been talking about Obsidian's Avowed for a while now, and thanks to the game's recent appearance at the Xbox Developer Direct, we have a fresh batch of screenshots available ahead of the title's 2024 launch.
Xbox's upcoming RPG looks like it's coming along really nicely as we tick over into the game's release year. Last year's summer showing got a mixed reception, but we definitely think the game seemed a lot more polished at Dev Direct!
Anyway, here are four new 4K screenshots of Avowed:

At the moment, Obsidian is aiming for a 'Fall 2024' release with Avowed, which sounds just fine to us. This is an Xbox first-party title of course, so you can expect it on Xbox Game Pass immediately on day one.
Looking forward to going hands-on with Avowed? Tell us if you're playing it day one down below!

- Ridiculously excited! I can't wait for it!
- It looks good, I'll definitely be playing it
- Fairly excited, but not getting my hopes up too much
- It looks fine, it just probably won't interest me
- Slightly disappointed by what I've seen so far
- It actually looks terrible to me!

i don't these are running on series x tbh. more likely pc
Looks alot better than it did a year ago...last year's reveal sucked any hype I had for the game....this years looked better
It's looking good. But they didn't actually show very much in the Developer Direct. Would have been good to have seen how an actual quest plays out, see the world, the menus etc. instead of short snippets of gameplay.
I've watched the Developer Direct a couple of times now, and whilst I am sold on the world, I do not yet feel the same way about the combat. The enemies looked very static, the combat very stilted, and not particularly reactive. I'm still really looking forward to the game, but I think I will be enjoying the game for the world, the quests and the inhabitants, rather than the combat. I'm hoping that I am mistaken about the combat though...
Well, Obsidian is damn good at crafting awesome worlds and cool stories, those are their strong sides. Even if Avowed looked way worse, I'd still give it a try. No complaints about the graphics though - not the best in the class, but still very nice.
@Fiendish-Beaver It is still early and what was in the video would have been frozen even earlier for recording. I really don't think the enemies will be that unaggressive even on Normal mode. This was just a demonstration, meant to give us a good look at things.
I don't think that the current game looks so different from the first sequence we saw years ago. Not anymore. Just that the cave was really dark in that first reveal where he drew the magical rune, and now the cave is lit up like a Christmas tree. 😄
Those screenshots are a tad suspicious, almost too "pretty".
I honestly don't know what I was expecting with this, but I never dreamed the gameplay would look so bad. I've watched the Direct video several times and the combat is so so so woefully bad. It didn't improve from the 1st reveal, which is alarming.
Nice to see the new Call of Duty hitting Gamepass this year
Calling it, just like I called Redfall, this game is going to flop (though not on a degree as Redfall but still). They have a lot of polish to do on animations, combat (not visceral enough, ie. cuts or bruises on enemies, bloodsplatters on the ground, weight of weapons, ...), the FOV was weird as hell, like somekind of VR game. I mean story could be good. Still Obsidian. But nothing was groundbreaking, impressive or interesting to me.
They way one of those devs described a simple choice & consequence in a 'post-Baldurs Gate 3' world is baffling to me. For me, these choice & consequences should be standard almost in a western RPG (not necessarily on a scale of BG3, but still).
I like what I see and in the end of the day it's an obsidian crpg, no one cares about jaw droppind visuals, gameplay > graphics.
@Fiendish-Beaver Thats pretty much how I feel about it. It doesnt feel like a combat focussed title, more like Skyrim with a bit more.
Thats fine for me as I love skyrim, and the world and creature design looks great. I'm trusting that Obsidan will create a compelling experience and this is probably my most anticpated Xbox release this year.
about to start my 4th run on outer worlds so yea im excited for avowed.
@Arxagelos CRPGs mean Computer RPGs, but mostly refer to games like Baldurs Gate 3, Fallout 1 and 2, Pillars of Eternity. This is a western RPG, with emphasis on NPC interaction, so I beg to differ about janky visuals.
Everyone was bitching about Starfield, but this ***** is ok? Unbelievable. Makes Starfield GOTY.
Don't give a damn about graphics. Just hope it's good. So far they've only shown dialogue and combat. Neither of which particularly wowed me. I'd like to see the levelling system, how abilities are earned, hopefully some other systems beyond just fighting and talking.
@Thrussted if you think visuals are junky then the game is not for you, if you have played "the outer worlds" and pillars of eternity mostly and seen Eora world then you probably know what to expect from Avowed visualy. Eora does not have Helblade 2 dark world setting.
Then again the studio has small experience with UE, they have 2 games with UE4(the outer worlds+grounded) and another 2 with UE5 coming(Avowed+The outer worlds2), so with these facts taken as granted you can't expect top notch jaw dropping visuals and Sony's quality mocaps. Visuals are fine for the rpg gender, all that matters is the gameplay. If you expected Avowed to reach Starfield Visual then you are going to be disappointed, you should lower your expectations because no one is expecting Avowed to be a visual showcase in the first place. Hellblade 2, gears 6 and probably Fable will fill that role.
You could be right, @theduckofdeath, and the fact that they may have 'switched off' the enemy aggressiveness for the purposes of giving us an insight into the look of the enemy, did occur to me too. As @Titntin says, it is likely that combat is not the main focus of the game anyway, and it certainly isn't something that would stop me from playing it. Sometimes, combat can get in the way of simply enjoying the world that has been built, and Avowed looks to have 'explore me' written all over it.
I just expect it to be a good obsidian game. They like creating carefully crafted stories and this seems to be them trying to experiment. It's obsidian, so I'll give it a shot. They've earned my trust, even if the game isn't the prettiest.
It’s Obsidian, one of the few developers that I get excited about period. Don’t care what they showed or didn’t show, don’t care what it looks like at this point. Only care about what the game will be once released and with Obsidian, I have absolutely zero doubt I’ll love it. Can’t wait…
It’s Obsidian. I trust them even if I think it looks… off… for some reason. Not sure why. I dunno though. Obsidian is one of the few developers I trust though.
Hyped for this game!!
@Fiendish-Beaver sand looks like a year or two ready .. tiny Tina looked more polished
IDK man it just looked not good to me. It is weird how that works sometimes going in I had no interest in indy and avowed was what I really wanted to see and they switched places.
Hopefully it will be good and not another starfield
@MrList why ? There's nothing in those screenshots, that suggests it isn't running on a series x
@somnambulance the game looks good,I feel the animation is a bit off however.
@Mephisto2869 Agree 100%. It looks off. The enemy character models look off too and it’s so darn colorful in a way that feels off too, but darn it, they did alright with the Outer Worlds, which also looked severely off to me, so I’m hoping this is a similar story.
@somnambulance loved the outer worlds it was great ,a little short ,but great
