Xbox studio Obsidian Entertainment has been working on The Outer Worlds 2 for a while now - you may remember the team's amusing announcement during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase of 2021. As far as we're aware the team is still working away on the title — alongside Avowed — and a new Rock Paper Shotgun interview has revealed that Obsidian is collaborating with the creator of the Fallout series on the upcoming title.
Tim Cain, creator of the original Fallout from 1997, worked for Obsidian for a while - including as co-director on The Outer Worlds. Cain has now left the studio, at least in a full-time capacity, but he's still working with the Xbox first party team on The Outer Worlds' sequel. Here's an example of his current work with them:
"There’s stuff they’re trying to do in the sequel, that of course I can’t talk about, that I get pulled in on because it’s similar to stuff I’ve done in the past,
Sometimes it’s just me saying, ‘I’m not gonna tell you what to do, but here are the pitfalls. Here are some of the huge, huge chasms that lie in your way, that you’re gonna have to wend around."
So, it sounds like Cain is more of a consultant for Obsidian these days rather than someone who's working directly on internal development. Still, if you're a fan of his work — particularly on Fallout and the original The Outer Worlds — you'll probably be happy to hear about his involvement in the sequel.
As for when we might see more on the game - we're not sure at the moment. The dev seems more focused on 2024's Avowed right now, and if we were to make any guesses, The Outer Worlds 2 will arrive a good while after that. Let's hope we see more on the title soon... that announcement trailer was such a tease!

In Obsidian we trust!
I feel like they have been doing Bethesda better than Bethesda these days.
New vegas was great, one of the best games of all time. Outer worlds was nothing like it though, seemed very boring and bland, much like Starfield imo.
@pinkfoto mind that Outer Worlds wasn't build on the biggest budget. But for what Obsidian managed to do with it they didn't build a bland game in my opinion. The world truly has some kind of a post apocalyptic feel to it. Compared to Starfield a game like Outer Worlds have plenty of visual story telling. But I get why it sometimes can feel a bit bland and that is because it's more focused on the dialogue and how you can play around with this. This is one of Obsidian's strenghts and that was one of the things where they focused on. Mind that you can not do everything on a tight budget.
the outer worlds was a great game
@pinkfoto See I found the humour helped a lot in Outer Worlds, and everything tied together well and most of the time your decisions had an impact.
Unlike Starfield, where I've often found interesting story nuggets finish in dead ends or with you having all rubbish options.
I do see the similarities, and have put similar time into both games - but I think Outer Worlds had a better "reputation" system, a better skill system and just a better held-together storyline and world...
More excited for this than I was with Starfield. Starfield has more to do but I prefer the pacing and density of the world of Outer Worlds. Hoping this turns out well… whenever we see it lol.
Outer Worlds 2, the best announcement for a game ever, I still rewatch it occasionally. Pitch perfect 😄.
im finishing up my 3rd run on outer worlds. its such a fun game to start over now and again. hope avowed come out sooner than later.
