Earlier this week, we shared a story about a Baldur's Gate 3 player who had found themselves banned for a year on Xbox after accidentally uploading three clips showcasing "some naked camp time fun" taking place in the game.
Now, the Director of Publishing over at Larian Studios has responded to the problem, confirming that discussions are being had with Microsoft and the two parties are working to make sure it doesn't keep occurring in the future.
"We’ve seen the reports that some players got banned or otherwise faced issues on Xbox having uploaded screenshots/videos of their ‘gameplay content’. We’re in discussion with Microsoft, and we’re looking into it. Annoying and uncool."
In a follow-up response, it was advised that you can turn off mature content in the options menu if you want to be extra safe for now - and don't forget you can deactivate automatic uploads so your clips aren't posted to the Xbox servers.
With this and the troublesome saving issue, Baldur's Gate 3 hasn't enjoyed the smoothest start to life on Xbox Series X|S so far, but it's still easily one of our favourite games of 2023 - and once these problems are finally sorted out, we look forward to spending many hundreds of hours with it over the coming years!

I seriously think Microsoft are a scummy company that being said I love this site and its got the best gaming community in my opinion out of the big 3
This is nothing though, you all wait until real AI takes over and multi functioning tasks around the world and accidentally shuts down the whole internet or your electric and gas supply at home or even your nice new electric car as you are driving along.
Could MS just implement it so when videos/pictures and so on are taken they aren’t auto uploaded?
Must be the most common sense way?
@OldGamer999 id like to think we're not at 'terminator' levels of panic just yet 👀🙂
@ironcrow86
I’ll be back.
The management team leading Xbox are uncool. They turned a cool gaming brand into something lame.
Tbh it isn't something to be uploading the ban is harsh but uploading sex scenes out of games is just sad to me but the ban is to much
@Savage_Joe Oh dear what a pity never mind the game obviously has a good story but it's not my type of game so no loss to me if they don't did anyone even care about the first 2 games? Not really
Microsoft wants Xbox to be a certain way and it's turning Xbox into more and more of a joke. They only want games that THEY want on the platform, they only want customers that will use their Xbox THEIR way.
They want developers and players to be "good enough" for them, rather than them being good enough for us.
@CharlieChooChoo and its has
@Savage_Joe There's not a pity story don't know what you are seeing plus I was being sarcastic buddy sorry you didn't realize that
@eire-shabba they where auto uploaded he didnt manually upload
The guy did not manually upload these .These where auto uploaded by microsoft .which is on auto upload in the settings. Microsoft should turn it off and let the user turn it on if needed .
It's likely just some auto-scan stuff that Microsoft has built into much of their uploads across all their various systems and technology.
It flags "nudity" and that triggers the Xbox system automatically - hopefully Xbox can add a rule to check if it's from games (probably only certain types, I'm guessing some online games where videos could be played in them such as Roblox they might want to scan still?) and ensure the bans aren't triggered...
I doubt it's anything but automated systems overreacting, and it'll likely be handled soon once the Xbox engineers have finished wrestling with the main MS teams
@CharlieChooChoo lol sorry. You responded to the "Microsoft are scummy" comment with "thats because they are".
I was adding the response to "This site has the best community of the big 3" with "it has".
Just trying to add some positivity back as I'm sometimes negative in my responses
@Savage_Joe All good bud👍
@cornholio005 Alright I didn't know that well then it's not his fault at all it's the people who made the game and normally if it's auto unloaded then it's the same for everyone I remember sunset overdrive uploaded loads of crap I didn't want and it also happened to anyone else I knew played the game so surely he can't be the only person it happened to but if not and he just did it himself it's very it's just a bit sad to me I'm sure if he wanted to watch the scene again that bad some other sad person already has it on YouTube but the ban is totally out of hand just ban him uploading stuff for a few months and block communications
xbox shrinking its fan base. do something phil!?
So if I avoid the sex and nudity by turning off mature content, does that also turn off blood and gore?
Loved BG1&2 and have been looking forward to playing this, but was avoiding it due to the reports of such titilating shenanigans. Its just not my thing.
Blood and gore turned off feels like too sanitised though.
@ValkyriaProfile Thanks for the advice, but that's not why I don't want that content. I just don't want that content. Fair enough for those that do.
Is there an option to just turn off sex and nudity?
Play Starfield instead!
I honestly see no issue with a grown adult uploading a video with some bewbs in it from a game on the system. These rules are ridiculous and need changing asap.
@Fenbops I don't think anyone would disagree with that.
This is 100% on Microsoft for having the default publish option enabled and then employing auto-banning.
Sony will have a field day with the negative optics of this if they're still employing similar tactics to the whole lending games to friends malarkey of the XB1 launch
MS, Sony, Nintendo have always been scummy companies but if you like to play video games on consoles, they're the only options so it means they can get away with stuff like this. It's nice to see a dev calling MS out, too bad no lessons will be learned by the giant corporation about getting better. Of course, the talking heads who run the company love to preach to others about that same thing.
If they got a year ban with the new rules that came into effect in august then its because of previous strikes, sexual content only adds 2 strikes to an 8 strike system, got to exceed that 8 for a year ban
@DeadmanGamer666 the previous article on this showed they got 3 strikes on each clip they made and made 3 clips total amounting in 9 strikes total.
This is ridiculous by MS. My account is my main email, I don’t record game clips, but all these stories of over zealous enforcement with no way to complain (this has got to Larian and still isn’t fixed or even acknowledged!) makes me wary of playing on Xbox anymore.
@Gamer83 the worrying thing is I only see this sort of thing getting worse. All of these companies like to censor and ban anyone who doesn’t fall in line with their ‘agenda’.
Please don’t use this story to dogpile Xbox. It’s really not them being “Scummy” it’s just an unfortunate sequence of events. The auto upload shouldn’t be on by default. That’s it.
As we get more games with adult content, this is bound to happen. But whether or not you think that stuff should be on the network for everyone to see, is pretty much irrelevant, because they don’t want it there and that makes sense. I personally don’t care, but whatever.
Larian Studios adding very bannable content is objectively worse.
@Fenbops
True.
@VoidPunk why?
@Fenbops
Cuts the games audience in half and makes it unplayable in homes with young children.
