It's now been two weeks since Microsoft pushed out a new Xbox firmware update to target the deleted saves issue with Baldur's Gate 3 on Series X and Series S, and since then we've seen far less reports of the problem.
On the face of it, the issue seems to have been fixed, although we've continued to monitor the situation recently and have found pockets of reports where the saves are still being deleted. It seems to be happening a significantly smaller number of players now, but there's still a chance you could be unlucky and run into it.
As mentioned above, there's a potential solution to the problem in the form of a workaround that was shared by Larian Studios back in December. This requires you to activate cross-saves ahead of time via the Larian servers, meaning that if the worst should happen and your saves get lost, you can (hopefully) still bring them back via this method. Some people have had trouble with this, while others have reported it working successfully.
workstudywork on Reddit: "When I’m not able to see my save, I opened the option menu. Then I unchecked the cross save and turned it on again. Wait for the saves to sync. Later then you would be able to see your saves. I am not sure if this works for you, but it works for me now, for the moment."
It might sound disappointing that this BG3 issue isn't fixed for everyone yet, but we must stress that reports of deleted saves have dwindled significantly over the past two weeks, so clearly something has worked. For now, most BG3 players suggest turning off Quick Resume and quitting out of the game entirely as a precaution as well.

It's an amazing game that I really look forward to playing on my Xbox. I did a single solo run that lasted 350 hours on the PC, and when I finished, I was hungry for more, which is always a good sign, is it not? I currently have two further runs ongoing on the PC too; one as a duo (in Tactician mode), and one as a trio. The game is quite simply a masterpiece.
I have the Xbox physical Deluxe version on order from Larian, and expect to be receiving it fairly soon. Hopefully by then all these issues will have been completely ironed out, and really look forward to doing another huge solo run on Tactician Mode, and if I can muster the courage, one on Honour Mode. I managed a solo run on Honour Mode in Divinity Original Sin 2, which remains as probably my proudest achievement to date, one that has only been achieved by 0.27% of players on the Xbox... 😊
I mean, it isn't a Baldur's Gate issue. It has been present since the Xbox One and the transition to cloud saves.
I'd be surprised if they finally, completely, fixed it, after all this time.
"10/10 GOTY" still can't work properly on Xbox.
I know it's more of an Xbox issue but you would imagine after all the time Xbox players had to wait for the game they could have at least made sure it worked properly. I mean it's not like it is a Series S "the weaker console" problem.
But it's Larian so they get a free pass.
The issue regarding lost saves appears to be unique to the Xbox, @Lup, however, every other game released on every other platform always release with some bugs that require fixing. The issue of bugs and performance is not unique to the Xbox nor Baldur's Gate 3. Chances of any game releasing without a single problem are pretty much improbable, and were we to expect games to release without any issues whatsoever, then we would probably never see another game release, ever!
As for Baldur's Gate 3 itself, the game is so complex that the fact that it runs at all on a console is a fantastic achievement. Larian should be commended for the technical qualities of the game...
@Fiendish-Beaver I would say at this point it is my third fav game all time behind morrowind and shadowrun for the sega genesis then this.
As far as bugs go it is what it is with a game like this I think it is hard to know what is going to happen you can do so many things so many ways things happen.
I own it on the pc also some crazy mods out there and I have the hard copy deluxe version coming for the xbox some day. The Larian merch site says quarter 1 I keep hoping for the email it has shipped.
Do you think they will ever allow mods on the xbox version?
Love Xbox, but have no desire to play this game on it. PC all the way for this one and it absolutely deserved GOTY last year. Just a brilliant brilliant game all the way around. I’ll still be playing both this and Starfield years from now.
@RIghteousNixon I agree with the playing it years from now and the best xp is probably always going to be the pc just due to the fact of mods for both games you mentioned.
I never play with mods on the PC, @VisitingComet1, as I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to using them. 🤣
I sent an email to Larian asking when they may be looking to ship my Deluxe copy, and received a reply the following day (which I thought was superb considering how busy they must be) to say they will be shipping Quarter One orders soon, and that as I ordered my copy on the day the pre-orders became available, my order will be part of quarter one dispatches.
I don't think Larian will put mods on consoles, mate. They never did with either of the Divinity Original Sin games, so I cannot see them doing it with BG3. Added to which, the game is already complex enough, so attempting to allow mods on a console is only asking for trouble...!
