It's been many years now since Xbox stopped providing sales figures of the Xbox One, and this continued into the Xbox Series X and S generation, so we don't truly know the full details about how many Xboxes Microsoft has sold.
That said, analysts often provide their own estimates, and according to the latest figures from Ampere Analysis (via the Financial Times), Xbox sales have dropped by around 15% in 2023 to somewhere in the region of 7.6 million units.
This apparently means the PS5 has outsold Xbox by almost three to one this year, as the PS5 figures are sitting at 22.5 million units with a 65% increase. Sony has also confirmed it has now sold over 50 million PlayStation 5 consoles to date. Meanwhile, the aging Nintendo Switch has dropped by 18% to 16.4 million units in 2023.
While this might look like bad reading for Xbox, it's also highlighted in the report that the Series X struggled with supply issues in the first half of the year, and that hardware sales aren't the be-all and end-all of Microsoft's strategy.
For example, here's a snippet of what an analyst at Creative Strategies had to say:
"Sony really cares about selling hardware but from a Microsoft perspective, it’s more about their subscription service."
If we look at another comparison over at VGChartz, it seems as though the Xbox Series X and S have sold somewhere around the region of 25 million units altogether so far, which is obviously around half the PS5. And don't forget we've seen plenty of Black Friday and Christmas deals in recent weeks, which should push those numbers up further.
