A lot has been said about Redfall throughout 2023, but at least Xbox and Arkane Studios haven't given up on it yet! In fact, the game has been getting some pretty superb updates in recent months, and they're certainly going down well.
Earlier this week, Xbox unveiled its official "Year in Review" tool for 2023, and although it might come as a surprise, we've seen quite a few players on Twitter and Reddit sharing playtimes of around 100 hours on Xbox this year.
thomasbeagle on Reddit: "Redfall was my most played game with 152 hours. It was a great game to play when I was recovering from being sick and couldn't really cope with anything too complex."
The first example below looks like 1,063 hours at first glance(!), but it was actually 150 hours on just Redfall:
The good news keeps on coming too, as Redfall has recently managed to turn its "Mostly Negative" rating on Steam into a "Mostly Positive". That new rating is only for the recent reviews, but it's definitely progress in the right direction!
In fact, we've noticed a trend doing the rounds on social media that Redfall has become "underrated", and that the recent updates have transformed it into a much more enjoyable experience. Here's one example of that:
Things are looking up for Redfall as we reach the end of 2023 then, and although it's clearly still not turned into the game that Xbox hoped it would be, we're just glad it's in a much better place compared to launch.
Will 2024 bring even better things for the game? We'd love to think so, but there has to be a cutoff point somewhere...
How many hours did you put into Redfall this year? Are you enjoying it more now? Tell us down below.
Have You Gone Back To Redfall? What Do You Think Of It Now? (387 votes)
- It's actually fantastic now!
- It's much better, pretty good
- It's not bad, not great either though
- It's still not very enjoyable
- I think it's terrible to be honest!

Just finished it, it's fun (with friends) but terribly broke nonetheless.
Kinda crazy this
Well now would be probably the time they should of released it if its finally fixed now
It's not fantastic now. It had it's issues, but story and main gameplay loop were fantastic since launch.
Going for my second play through as soon as I finish all achievements on Starfield.
I always thought it was a great game!
Glad it's starting to get more well-received.
I played it at launch and had way too many issues with co op not working or crashes. I enjoyed it enough that I plan to play again with someone else this year.
It’s shocking how willing people are to dunk on themselves online.
Worth mentioning is a significant portion of the recent positive reviews point out they got the game on sale for $20.
Instead of the laughable $70 that's being charged regularly.
Another half-baked game with major issues, long after release, under the Bethesda umbrella...
It was decent at launch and now trending towards pretty good. I think the marketing was kind of poor on this one. It headlined like 3 or 4 shows and they did everything they could to squash the Left 4 Dead comparisons it was getting. Then they went further by saying it was very much a single player experience first which suggests there was a heavy narrative focus. The always online feature and still shot cut scenes were clear indications that they always intended it to be co op first.
If they just embraced that co op focus it probably would have been compared to the Back 4 Blood, Borderlands 3, Outriders type games where it would seem decent.
Definitely plan to get back to this. Just too many games to play!
I wanted to like it at launch, but found the game to be sort of miserable, to be honest. About the only positive things I could say about it is 1) that it was better than Atomic Heart (which you gotta remember this was before Gollum, Kong, and Destinies released… though Atomic Heart had times where my controller stopped working outside the joystick, so it’s hard to elevate it above those turds), 2) there were no game breaking bugs in my time with it, and 3) that it was not one of the three games that caused me to fall asleep while I was playing them this year. So there’s that!
The AI was broken at launch and the cutscenes were a joke. When I was playing it with my wife, she made the comment, “You know, I’m not having fun with this and I think Skyrim has better graphics. It’s weird. Can we quit?” And I said yes! I didn’t even want to play something else. I tried to play it a few other times, but I just didn’t like it. I’m sorry. I didn’t enjoy it at all and there’s no way I’d go back to it unless I got paid to do it.
You can’t polish a ….
Its awful was when it was released and still is
It's a fun survival ✌️
Great game. One of the best I played this year.
The only thing i think now that needs a serious adjustment is the damage. Like you can get barely touched by anything and you are almost dead. Also i am testing a replay with my level 20 character and he feels no more powerful outside of having better guns. Meaning the damage I receive as a level 5 and 20 feel roughly the same. You can die in an instant and that feels off to me. I still have it as a 7/10 game but some issues are still there and annoying.
I played it last week for the first time for about and hour or two. Didn’t hate it but didn’t love it. I might give it some more time this upcoming weekend.
I played right before the last big patch..... there wasn't a single redeeming thing about it.
It sucks, was really excited for this
Fingers crossed they pump out several more heavy patches
I never understood the hate for this game. Sure it was buggy at release but what game isn't these days. I think they over sold it. It came out right as we were exiting the more severe COVID drama as well. I think expectations were too high TBH.
I've definitely spent well over 100 hours on it. I played solo on GP. It felt like a XOne game carried over to the XSX, but it was oddly engaging and kept my interest the whole time.
The game had its issues, but the devs have definitely made it better. Its worth playing IMO. I'm sporadically replaying on hard mode again. The patches keep tackling glitches, issues with in game spawns, etc. Get in on GP or on sale and I doubt you'll regret it.
Still two years away from being ready
Seems like Xbox games being underrated and unfairly hated on has been the standard on the internet.
I laughed more than I probably should at the headline but honestly it baffles me how anyone can think this game is actually good and the fact they are still charging £70 for it on steam is hilarious.
But it's not 60 fps. So it sucks. My eyes fell out my head.
Yea. Those people exist.
Yes. They are missing out on a fun game.
@HonestHick Agreed. My feeling exactly. Thought I was fighting bosses every single time.
@GuyinPA75 yeah the damage scaling is just bad. Like no reason to take half life damage to something so small and not even a vampire, and the ones that siphon your blood kill you before you even get a second to get it off you. Things like that are now the primary issue i have with it.
@MrMagic might be a hard pill to swallow here but believe it or not humans have different opinions. Seems like i am grabbing this out of thin air i know, but you can trust me that it’s true. Would you believe some people don’t like the Last of Us? Seems weird to me also but again it’s part of the demonstration i have given you here. The good thing is we get to buy what we want and clearly a lot more people didn’t buy it then those that did.
@HonestHick Yes I'm aware that some people have terrible taste, that's why I was laughing.
@MrMagic same here, it’s all part of the fun. Some games are just bad these days and i can’t understand why when so much money is on the line with them. Not like 215 million people aren’t going to go online and say avoid this train wreck and yet time and time again we are getting broken releases. This is an area MS must get fixed, Nintendo and Sony rarely to never release games that look like they needed another calendar year of work and fixes.
I love how the video calling Redfall highly underrated showcased one of the biggest issues with the game, it's empty with hardly any enemies around.
74 hours in for me. It can be repetitive but it's been a good time.
Loved it. Enjoyed it much more than Starfield.
Its still not a good game and never was imo. But hey, people like different things so good for you all that like it!
The truth is most of the people criticizing Redfall didn't even played the game. They are just repeating what they hear others saying.
I'm sure the game is pretty decent and for sure not as bad as many say, plan to try it sometime soon. If it was in a really bad state at launch, fair enough, but there's no reason to carry on hating if it's running ok now.
Anyway, there's a bunch of hate around for certain games that I truly don't understand. If you've tried something and genuinely didn't like it, then fair enough, but otherwise it's just being bitter about things ,I personally don't understand. For example, I've just completed Atomic Heart+ dlc and the dlc is a bit weaker, but thought the main game was actually pretty good. Not a GotY, but definitely not the universally awful game is made out to be by some groups.
Lol, 1000 hours is a lot of total playtime across all games played that year?
I played 900 hours of Destiny 2 from February until early December, alone. That's before we even get to the other owned games and game pass titles...
Haven't played this game yet as I didn't activate my Game pass core code yet. Just not a lot of time. Also some of you mention you want to play with someone again but me, I got nobody so some of you will be my fake buddies to play with 🤨 My real friends don't game, they make a lot of money.
