You may have seen some news today about Xbox "struggling" in Europe, and it comes from some GSD data (via the website GamesIndustry.biz) pointing out that the Series X and Series S were down 52% year-on-year in October 2023 compared to October 2022, while the Nintendo Switch dropped 20% and the PS5 increased by 143%.
That obviously doesn't make for fantastic reading, but the "catch" we mentioned is that it doesn't include every European country. The likes of the UK and Germany aren't tracked for this data - instead, it's made up of Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland alone.
Something else to point out is that Microsoft has achieved sales gains with the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in Europe at times in 2023, but for most of the year, those gains have sadly been dropping off. This is despite Starfield being the biggest Xbox launch of the generation in Europe following its release back in September.
As for the PS5's major sales increase, this is apparently due to a significantly larger batch of stock being available in October 2023 compared to October 2022. In fact, if you look back to 2022 as a whole, Xbox was the only platform to boast improved console sales in Europe compared to 2021 - PlayStation and Nintendo actually fell quite heavily year-on-year. The tables have turned now though, and Sony has spent the majority of 2023 making huge sales gains in the console space compared to the previous 12 months as a result of that increased stock.
So, we don't think that Xbox is in major trouble in Europe based on this data, but nevertheless it's always disappointing to hear that console sales have fallen by such a large degree. Here's hoping Black Friday will turn things around!

I know you are trying to portray it positive with your catch but wasn’t UK sales also down in October?
It is what it is I guess.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Console sales across the board are down in the UK compared to 2022 I believe, but the Series X and Series S had a huge boost in September compared to August.
https://www.purexbox.com/news/2023/10/thanks-to-starfield-uk-xbox-sales-enjoyed-a-huge-increase-in-september
I don't have the exact figures to hand in terms of October 2022 Vs. October 2023 in the UK...
Your sister site PushSquare are acting like a PlayStation fanboy with this information. Expected better.
@Nightcrawler71 PushSquare is terrible. Love PureXbox, NintendoLife, TimeExtension. Can't stand PushSquare, even when i was maining a PS4
To me its mostly Microsoft fault. They increase the console by 50€, not a great idea when you need to sell consoles in a territory that buys PS 4-1 or more.
Rarely I see any ads about xbox.
Only now they decrease the price of the console, when Sony have been doing 100€ discount since the summer and more in this black friday. So the 399€ price of the Series X is negated a little by the PS5 digital.
It also shows in the leaflets of the major shops, the big item in gaming is the PS5 discounted
@Nightcrawler71 Their resident representatives are here already.
@Carck I bought a PS4 before an Xbox One and the toxic vibes there (staff and fanboys) put me off from the start. Last generation, it was peaceful here, but since Game Pass became super popular and especially during the ABK acquisition... That attracted them like honey attracts flies.
Folks, can I please request that we keep this on topic and avoid dragging PushSquare into it? 😇 We're all friends on the team and clearly just went with different angles for this story!
Thanks in advance, I appreciate it 🙏
This is a huge part of why MS split their efforts into PC and Console. I'm sure they want to sell consoles, but so far they get goo revenue from the region via game pass and first party PC games, they will be very happy with how things go forward.
Next year is the year that things will really bloom for the xbox division. Thats when we will see how much of a hope there is for them, although it took multiple years, and chains of solid releases, for the PS3 to gain traction in their weakest markets.
Took the combined reputation accumulated from Uncharted 1, 2, 3 and The Last of Us for the PS3 to really make a name for itself. That was a 6 year span. It will similarly take years for Xbox to achieve anything similar. And unlike Sony during that gen, Microsoft is at zero risk of going bankrupt as they wait.
I would not mention the UK
A now 51% PS5 territory with about 23% Xbox.
Germany is probably even worse at a guess.
As I have mentioned on here before.
Microsoft nowadays don’t know how to do outside of the USA promotion wise, Microsoft think Europe and the UK and Germany do things like the USA but we are a different market.
However on a positive note series x sales are picking up slowly in my store and across others in the UK since the £369.99 price drop.
But nowhere near the PS5 disc consoles flying out the door and warehouse stock. Not forgetting the prior PS5 COD bundle deals before that as well.
@FraserG I was not even going to mention them, but you need to be aware that for a network site... if you guys have communication and are not isolated, you might want to discuss at some point the tone they tend to push for the sake of clicks. Hell, the opening comment in their own article posted on this topic... by the writer of the article himself... They end up actively encouraging the comment sections spiraling out like this.
I really want Xbox to do well and succeed as I have been with them day one every console and prefer the series x a console the quick resume etc and the Xbox controller.
Will be interesting to see what they do next year, because if GP subscriptions don’t pick up on all other devices and consoles sales stay low, I’m not sure what they can do.
It’s about the games but also brand recognition, reputation and momentum, three tough areas to get out to the general public and masses.
Hopefully it starts to pick up. Can’t have these long droughts with no games like they did in ‘22. I think they have a much better console in series x. Still paying for that disastrous Xbox one reveal too, right as they’d gained so much ground during 360 era
The problem is the already established user bases and game franchises that exist.
FIFA and COD are known for PlayStation add Spider-Man etc and the masses go crazy for PS5.
Mention Mario kart, Mario platform and Zelda and the masses go yes please, Switch.
Also both have massive reputation and user base and fans.
You try and combat all the above even with GP and well, we can see the results so far, not great.
@FraserG sorry Fraser, it was not a dig at anyone in the team in particular. You guys write for the audience you get. It's just that with the overwhelming success of the PS brand a significant part of the community became loud, obnoxious and mean spirited.
This is something i hope never happens to the Xbox community, even if success hits in the future
@Carck No worries, thanks for your understanding!
@Nightcrawler71 I own a Switch, a PS5, an XSX, and have a gaming PC. I abhor Pushsquare's bias. I prefer Pure Xbox and Nintendo Life over that narrow-minded website, so I avoid it like the plague.
@FraserG Of course. Just, those writers have no editorial integrity with their forced spin. There are different takes, but bias isn't it.
The GamePass and Ad revenue box seems to be stagnant again. It really does seem like Microsoft will go 3rd party the first chance they get.
Unfortunately Xbox got it wrong on day of realise with series consoles.
PS5 didn’t have much and a lot of cross generation games, but they had enough and used other studios to give them games like sack boy and demon souls remake.
Xbox should have floored Sony with day one console release the most amazing Halo game ever and put Xbox and Halo back on the map and an amazing start to a new generation and game pass.
Ever since we have seen hardly anything from Xbox studios of any real GP or console selling and brand momentum power.
That's probably good news for the "anti-monopoly" bros who wants Xbox to go 3rd party... The third place in a market with three console makers is a monopoly, whereas the first place in a market with two console makers is some sort of ecossocialist utopia /s
Yet at the moment during the black fiday on amazon in Germany the series x is top 14 in France Top 5 and in England top 4 whereas before it was top 100 or even 200 as if
it's the price reduction that sells
The ps5 has long been discounted as normal it has sold better
I would like xbox to stay in the console market even if just to keep the other two aware etc.
Even if Xbox went third party how would their games actually do, would they sell on the other consoles and PC?
Game pass sales at the moment are telling us maybe not.
Many including myself only bought the Series X because we couldn't get our hands on a PS5.
Now Sonys stock is sorted out, this was bound to happen unless Microsoft really took the fight to Sony and stopped making comments that indicate that they have already lost and don't care about console sales.
I don't totally regret buying an Xbox and have enjoyed some of the gamepass exclusives but if I didn't have either console, I know which one I'd buy.
@Jhjh6980
Absolutely correct. Xbox sales have picked up in my store UK since the price drop.
Problem is Microsoft think Xbox is only for Black Friday and not the rest of the year, which is a typical American sales technique and doesn’t work when sales for the whole year are totalled up.
@FraserG If only the comments section were as civil about “rivalry” as you all. 😅
And we all still think Microsoft are doing right by Xbox.
Europe October 2023:
while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by nearly 111,000 units.
Same month a year ago, Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 69,666 units (-35.4%)
Year today sold, Xbox Series X|S has sold 1.34 million units
A joke of company that don’t have a clue I very unfortunately have to say. A sad day for the beloved Xbox brand.
So disgusting how Sony fanboys are trolling yet again and turning this story to into their narrative. They make it seem like Xbox is losing somehow, when in reality Xbox is coming on top on every possible meter (better games, better hardware, consumer friendliness etc.). And what is even more sad is that they have to come here on PX to troll and pretend to be Xbox owners, everyone knows they are just sad because they chose the losing console and cannot affort anymore to get a second console, so they come here and try to make Xbox look bad in anyway they can.
@OldGamer999: "A sad day for the beloved Xbox brand". Yeah and i have bridge to sell you. You live for these kind of bad news and with that avatar, go back to PS
@AllmightyBack
I have all three console and change my avatar on a regular basis between all three mainly depending on what console I’m playing the most at that time.
I’m posting facts not rumour and it is a sad day for the Xbox brand and has been unfortunately since the release of this new generation.
I was there at the start of the Xbox brand and the Xbox360 glory days.
So don’t go all fan boy on me.
@Carck The fan base that you will find the most annoying is the one for the company you like the least, Since you prefer Xbox and Nintendo their fanboys don't really register for you 🤷
@Juanalf bold assumption. I’ve played PlayStation since 98, way before Xbox even existed. And i have little to no preference for Nintendo, particularly because I’m a massive Sega fan and their “sega sucks lmao” quips irk me.
It’s just the way it is. The brand that is on top has the most obnoxious fans. And since the “battle” is just between PS and Xbox, well..
@Onlyboxmatters is this meant to be ironic?
Interesting those but not UK/Germany huh. As in the sales of countries in the area of land mass. Game talking only.
I mean what has come out that usually appeals to Europe? Maybe soccer sales? COD? Others without that sort of appeal of certain games? Gamepass subscriptions due to not much third party or first party sticking out?
Well WRC 2023 came out that'd be sizeable for European sales. Unless people aren't happy about EA influence? Even if it is good and Codemasters are putting effort in.
Maybe better marketing I mean I don't find the Xbox marketing that great to be honest the Gamepass ones 'make sense' but are so eh in execution. The Samsung TV Gamepass Starfield ones are 'fine' and get the point across.
I do find some PS marketing to be 'ok' and Nintendo's family lifestyle marketing with a parent and child or just got home from work adult are there a thing.
I mean for Age of Empires games many more PC on Steam then Xbox?
Or just what Xbox offered this year which was a fair amount but 'impactful' (not counting Starfield), Age of Empires, HiFi Rush, Minecraft Legends, Redfall, Forza Motorsport 8, probably missing others. Maybe less of a splash in a way.
Or deals going on?
@OldGamer999 Xbox will never outsell PS in Europe. Nor around the world. PS is the biggest name in the game alongside Nintendo. Xbox just needs to stick to the GP plan and hope that gives them back a respectful marketshare but they ain’t going to outsell PS.
@HonestHick
I do get what you saying there.
I just think they could do better and help themselves more, especially with their studios and maybe studio management and quality of the games released.
Removed - trolling/baiting; user is banned
@FraserG aww friend👍
@OldGamer999 yeah i agree they could help themselves more. Time will tell cause they have the studios now and huge IP’s. So no one to blame but themselves if they can’t get out must have games that make gamers buy into the ecosystem.
Taken on it's own it's not great reading for Xbox. But as I said on Push Square consoles sold is only ONE metric. Xbox is bigger than just console now, it's on PC and Cloud so comparing console sold ALONE isn't an apples to apples comparison.
If we look at other metrics Xbox is doing fine. E.g. in revenue Xbox + ABK is making more than Sony and Nintendo in gaming.
That isn't to say consoles sold isn't important, it is, as it impacts whether third parties will make games for a console, but it isn't AS important as it used to be.
@Onlyboxmatters I cant decide which is more embarrassing your comment, or the 8 likes youve received, who cares ,Sony and Microsoft don't, so why should you.
@themightyant doesn't matter whos making the most money ,well not to me anyway ,just want them all to make great games ,they do, and they can have my money.
@Carck While I partly agree with what you say, I think it's only a small part of the PlayStation community that is so negative. And if we are being completely fair a small portion of the Xbox community is overly defensive and takes gleeful pleasure in celebrating every Sony failure. Sadly you get these clowns in all communities. Personally I think it's about even on both sides, the only difference is the larger number of PS players make them more noisy and noticeable imho
@Tharsman Completely agree. I had my comment removed for calling them out on sewing seeds of division. To be fair I could have been more constructive in my wording, but I simply hate when media does this. It doesn't help anyone but them and makes gaming discourse worse.
@FraserG well said.
@Onlyboxmatters 😂😂
The current console generation are now in their 4th year of existence and who wanted to buy them, has already done so.
That's why the only way to boost sales is to come with some innovations.
@OldGamer999 Microsoft has made many mistakes all through this gen. Redfall and Halo multiplayer, forced endless ads on the dashboard to name a few. How long till they make Xbox exclusive games exclusive to Game Pass to boost sales? They've also had a lot of delays, some outside their control though.
Game Pass could be an on going success but they can't force ads on everyone and raise prices for it expecting subs to stay. But this seems to be what they are doing, which I guess they'll have to do if they are paying around 200 million per big AAA title on it. Game Pass is taking away from Xbox consoles though, as it's on PC and cloud. So naturally less people will buy an Xbox.
However they hide their GP sub numbers now outside court room evidence. So it's difficult to judge how they are performing.
One thing though is it's proven people in Europe will continue to play COD on PlayStation, for now. So they aren't as phased by MS buying it. MS now have a plethora of huge studios and games, if they fail it is entirely on them, and would pride money doesn't buy success. But let's see how they go eh.
@SuntannedDuck2 why interesting that they didn't include UK and Germany? We aren't part of the EU anymore. Please stop calling British people European. We hate it. We're independent and British.
@jedinite I meant the countries in that area of the world. Whether part of the continent/near the other countries. I edited my comment to clarify.
Value the independence. I talk games that's is all. Nothing more than that.
