It's looking like Starfield has been a huge success for Xbox and Bethesda pretty much across the board. The game boosted Xbox console sales in the UK for the month of September, set a record for new Xbox Game Pass subscribers last month, and it seems to be doing incredibly well at keeping people playing as well.
According to NPD figures, the only game to have more monthly active users on Xbox during September was Fortnite. It's no surprise to see Epic's juggernaut title come out on top of a player engagement list, but Starfield sitting at number two is pretty impressive for a single-player title.
We have more Microsoft-owned entries on this list too, which is also good to see. The newly-acquired Call of Duty franchise breaks the top three with 2022's Modern Warfare 2, while Minecraft also makes a mid-table finish. Interestingly, Xbox Game Pass's Party Animals also sneaks in at number 10.
We'll be interested to see if Starfield can carry a similar sort of momentum into October, and potentially beyond. We'd expect it to drop off a bit due to the game's singe-player nature, but you never know, it's certainly a huge game and one that will keep players engaged for hours and hours!
So, what do you make of this? Surprised to see Starfield in here or not? Drop your thoughts down below.

Damn no fifa in the list 😮
@Cherip-the-Ripper
Why do you want to play FIFA 23 when EA released FC24?
Seeing all those exclusives make up the PS top ten really gives me FOMO.
That is impressive for a single player only game. It's the only single player game in the whole list if i am not mistaken. Alot of people must be enjoying it.
It's great to see all 3 platforms doing great with Starfield, Spiderman 2 and Mario Wonder. As consumers we need the competition and its exactly what we want
Not surprising considering it had a lot of hype going into launch.
@Ocat meant fc 24
@Cherip-the-Ripper It's a US list.
I kinda got burnt out doing the seemingly countless side quests in Starfield....barely touched the main quest and I haven't played for like a month now ...I do plan to return and finish the game ..just got other things I have started that I want to finish first
@TJ81 ohhh well in that case I'm surprised Madden isn't in there. Pleasantly surprised that is.
I love Starfield but for some reason it nearly always makes me tired when I play it. It's the reason why my save is days because I end up pausing it to take a break. I can't really explain it. I still need to actually buy it but for now I'm happy with Game Pass and owning the dlc through early access.
I want to love this game, I really do! It checks all the boxes for me: sci-fi game, RPG, kind of a Star Trek/Federation vibe... and yet I'm bored to death playing it. I don't know why. Don't know what to do either: persevere? Give up?
@taternuggets Especially when you consider the fact that the Playstation is out selling X+S, 3:1.
So not only do they likely have the same numbers and higher in these third party games, their first party games are just so wildly popular they're supplanting them and knocking them off the list. /s
@Tatoun Probably just not for everyone. Both my girlfriend(her first Bethesda game) and I are around 200 hours on our individual playthroughs where we each have our own X. And honestly, no sign of getting bored yet for either of us
@InterceptorAlpha i think he was being sarcastic as none of the top 10 PlayStation games are exclusive
I'll be extremely impressed if it retains this position or at least a top 5 in October.
@Ocat because FIFA is in Gamepass while FC24 isn’t?
@taternuggets lmao…I have a Series S (which is actually my first Xbox system and I plan on upgrading to a Series X this week), a PS5 and a Switch, so I don’t say this as a fanboy of any system, but man, I look at my PS5 and think, this really is just a system to play my PS4 games on with better load times (and frame rates in some cases). I really don’t understand all the flack that Xbox gets for lack of exclusive games this gen when PlayStation hasn’t put out all that much either three years in, especially when you think about what quite a few of their first party games are…sequels that are pretty samey compared to their predecessors. I’m not necessarily criticizing (though have come to accept the PS5 really is just a PS4 Pro 2, at least for me) but am really confused that Xbox is placed in the sh*t house on this score and Sony isn’t sh*t on in the exact same way for what it’s done this gen. Just for the record, if I had to keep only one console it would be the Switch no questions asked (paired with my Mac mini for emulating retro games, I’m set anyway), so I’m not an Xbox fan trying to defend Xbox or just sh*t on Sony. But if you only have an Xbox and not a PS5, you aren’t missing out on much really (except RC and Ghost of Tsushima (the PS5 version is just so much more enjoyable to play), minus having to use the sh*t controller for PS5 games). But anyway, great comment, it gave me a good laugh this dreary morning!
@Sakai I think @InterceptorAlpha picked up on that, hence his (much appreciated) sarcasm as well
@Sakai added the /s.
@InterceptorAlpha @taternuggets was just thinking because of your comments…it’s funny, I bought a Series S just to have access to GamePass (which also because of Costco I was getting GP for $60 CAD a year, so it was a no brainer picking up a Series S just for GamePass), thinking my PS5 would be worth it for Sony games and everything else. But with how uninteresting a lot of Sony’s out put is for me personally, games already released and on the horizon, and my preference for playing on an Xbox minus the horrible home screen interface (mainly because of the controller and often better specs in the same game compared to PS5), if Sony had put out a similarly priced and spec’d system as the Series S (the PS5 digital system is too expensive given how little more you need to pay to get a disc system) I for sure would have gone in the opposite direction and bought the cheap Sony console to play its exclusives and the beefier Xbox to play everything else.
Edit: I say all of this as someone who has had a PlayStation since the PS1 days and who still cherishes having my physical copies of games like the The Legend of Dragoon, FF VII and FF VIII.
@Sakai It's the only one that is ONLY single player (half the list has single player modes) and yes it's impressive, although perhaps not surprising it's by FAR Xbox's biggest release of the year.
@Casco
Clever
Only made it 3 hrs in before moving on from Starfield. Finished Spiderman and doing Lies of P on PS5. If anyone likes or interested in souls games and already has gamepass, huge recommendation
I've put a lot of time into it by my standards, but I've also been playing a lot of Fortnite so sounds like an accurate list to me
I think fortnite will have another good couple months with the mini-season in a few days, and then Chapter 5 in December.
@QuoVadis You prefer to play Xbox for the controller which makes sense but better specs for the same games? You play on Series S though.
@InterceptorAlpha Outselling them 3:1 in some places but it's even more dominant in some places in Europe. 90% percent of the market share in France for example.
@MrMagic Sorry, admittedly confusing way to put it. As far as specs comment, it was in anticipation of having a Series X/a general comparison of the 2 consoles. In other words, I prefer the Xbox controller, and would/will prefer Series X over PS5 because specs for same games are often better on X (often); one game that comes to mind as an example is Fallen Order. Thanks for the chance to clarify.
@MrMagic 3:1 is for global sales. So the average of even markets where it is outsold.
Still an impressive lead since they don't have a budge console.
@Tatoun ignore all the side content and focus exclusively on the Faction quests and the main quest. The main quest starts slow but starts becoming interesting at a point I cant talk about because spoilers.
The Crimson Fleet faction quest is amazing, but depending on your choice's things can get HARD near the end (space combat can be hard if you are at a disadvantage).
These quest lines are not extremely long, but they are the thing that really make the game shine.
Starfield has been an unmitigated success (especially with having 11mil players already) and im excited to see what the dlc will be in the future.
Starfield all day baby
