Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 is out in the wild, and the critics are now sharing their own thoughts.
Reviews have been spread across multiple platforms so far, but they still provide a general idea of what to expect if you haven't already got hold of this new collection. So, let's get right into it:
Xbox Achievements - 7/10
"In the end, this is, for serious Metal Gear addicts, a must. It brings these games onto modern platforms and puts them in each other’s company... A comforting anthology for diehards, with some disappointing omissions, sweetened by the inclusion of certain curios."
GameSpot - 8/10
"Konami has still put together a comprehensive bundle, collecting five highly influential games (and multiple variations) from a period spanning 24 years."
Push Square - 8/10
"The Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection bundles together three of the greatest games ever made, but does so in a convoluted manner."
Nintendo Life - 7/10
"As for the overall package, there's a lot here that will keep you entertained, but the way it's been presented feels less than ideal. Still, it's a compilation well worth investigating if you're itching to play (or replay) the Metal Gear Solid saga."
VG247 - 3/5
"Having the entire main Metal Gear storyline in one package as has previously been released would have been fantastic, but as it stands, this Metal Gear Solid Master Collection (Vol 1) is the best legitimate way to play these classic games."
Have you tried out the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection on Xbox yet? How are you finding it? Tell us in the comments.

I have bought a physical Xbox copy but it is going to stay wrapped for the moment as I played MGS 1-4 last year for the first time
Its a cash crab and a lazy one at that
On this site, you could make a comparison with the backwards compatible titles, or are they exactly the same? Konami said that the first game will be available separately, the main entry that is not available in the HD collection on Xbox 360, Xbox One and Series S|X, that has 2 and 3, plus Peace Walker separately. Revengeance is also available. The second collection will be more relevant on Xbox because of the fourth main entry.
I am happy that the first game finally came out for current systems but man am i disappointed with the treatment it got. This is simply a 1 on 1 port from the original , blocky , low res ps1 game. IMHO they could have AT LEAST bump the resolution a bit and smoothen the whole thing out a little so it looks ok on bigger televisions. There is a MUCH better / smoother looking version on pc available.
@Sol76 I haven't played that one but I played the GC remake, The Twin Snakes. Why they don't add this version, I wonder.
Finished MGS 1 last night. Forgot how hard that game is. Spent hours trying to beat Rex and Liquid. He kicked my butt good but I finally got him. So pumped to start 2.
@Banjo- I wondered why it wasn't included either. It has higher quality audio (since it was all re-recorded) and the character voices used in that version became canon (as Mei Ling lost her Chinese accent in Twin Snakes and was kept that way for MGS4).
I know some people felt Twin Snakes made things a little too easy when the first-person camera from MGS2 was added, but I really like Twin Snakes version over the original (and I have played both).
The only thing I can think is that it's an odd licensing issue. While Konami certainly owns Metal Gear Solid, it's possible that Silicon Knights (or maybe even Nintendo) own the rights to the Twin Snakes version specifically.
And since Silicon Knights is no more...that could put things in limbo.
I have the HD collection version from before are these the same or been updated in this new collection?
Nice collection for the best videogame franchise. The master books and other extras are a must for the fans. I would have liked it to come with a launcher for all the games and content though.
Can't wait for Vol. 2!
@GamingFan4Lyf I can still play it on my GC, Wii and Wii U, but it would be great if they could add it to the new collection. It was the first MGS game that I played.
@niggyt2004 Good question.
This release has been about as convoluted at MGS's plot.
Brought to you by the same people that brought you Silent Hill HD collection. Take that as you will.
i need og re 1,2,3,cv on a disk!
Sucks that you can’t play this on Xbox One. I can understand that decision with certain games but not one that was brought out over 20 years ago. What’s the reason behind that?
