Starfield is the most highly anticipated Xbox Game Pass game of September 2023, and it's actually one of the most highly anticipated games of the entire decade! Of course, early access began a few days ago on Xbox and PC with the launch of the Premium and Constellation editions, but we still have the standard release to go.
With that in mind, we've made a few adjustments to this guide and removed the early access sections, leaving us with the release dates, release times and a few other key details about the Xbox Game Pass launch this week.
So, here's everything you need to know about the Starfield launch on Xbox and PC:
Starfield Xbox Game Pass Release Date
Starfield's Xbox Game Pass release date is September 6th across Xbox Series X|S and PC. This is when the standard edition of Starfield becomes available to everyone via the service and for everyone who has bought it separately.
Please note that some external links on this page are affiliate links, which means if you click them and make a purchase we may receive a small percentage of the sale. Please read our FTC Disclosure for more information.
Starfield Xbox Game Pass Release Time
Starfield's Xbox Game Pass release time is 5pm PT / 8pm ET on September 5th, 2023 and 1am BST / 2am CEST on September 6th. This is also the same time that the standard version will become available to play if you've bought it.

Starfield Preload Time For Xbox
The full Starfield preload is now available on Xbox Game Pass, allowing you to download the entire game on your Xbox Series X|S or PC ahead of launch. To access this, simply go to the Xbox Game Pass app, find Starfield in the "Coming Soon" section, and then select the "Pre-Install" option.
Starfield Xbox Download Size
The Starfield download size is around 100GB on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and around 116GB on PC. There's a chance that we may get another update prior to the Xbox Game Pass release, but Bethesda hasn't said anything yet.
Is Starfield On Xbox One?
Starfield is playable on Xbox One through Xbox Cloud Gaming. You can access this version with a subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, but you'll need a strong and reliable internet connection in order to enjoy a smooth experience. Starfield has not been developed natively for Xbox One, and this is very unlikely to change in the future.

I really hope this one is a winner!
Can't wait to see what Bethesda has cooked up this time. I hope it's something I actually finish.
The only Bethesda RPG I ever stuck with and "finished" (e.g. completed the main story) was Skyrim.
Very good news about the Cloud for Xbox One. I have a friend who is going to be very happy.
Has PureXbox been furnished with a review copy of Starfield? Interesting to see that Eurogamer has been barred from getting one by Bethesda
Eurogamer complained about not getting a code and Bethesda sent one out! you should do the same @PureXbox
@FraserG did you guys get a review code?
It seems Bethesda are being very cautious over who is actually receiving a code.
So far Edge, EG, PureXbox haven’t received codes (or have very late so no day 1 reviews)
@Darylb88 EG didnt get one. Bethesda sent Digital Foundry a code with a specific clause that EG cant use it. Bit grim that.
Edit: apologies, just seen the update.
Two unsolicited days off...with 3 days till release. Stupid hurricane! Go do some laps in the gulf till next week!
@Weebleman They got one around 5.45pm today after putting a aticle about the situation. Hope this site can get a code too! They are all part of ReedPop afterall.
Counting down the hours for the reviews to hit. Just two days to go now! Can’t wait to read about this one and let the excitement build
So EG is finally getting review code, I don't suppose @Purexbox.com was part of the email chain?
I think even PCGAMER got review code, Zenimax can be unbelievably thick headed about this stuff
I downloaded it last week, just gotta wait til the 6th to play.
I haven't watched any videos or read any reports so I'm going in blind.
Sadly we don't have access to Starfield at the time of writing. That'll hopefully change very soon, but not in time for us to deliver a review this week.
We're obviously disappointed by that, but it is what it is! 🤷♂️
@FraserG
This all still weirdly feels like some bizarre fallout from Kotaku(??), those couple years back.
IT makes ZERO sense, too exclude an Xbox centric game site
Somebody at Zenimax really hates Reedpop.....
Still looking forward to the review!
@BBB ha ha. I had to buy some things on Amazon and well..........I pre-ordered it, going against all my video game morals to not preorder
I'm mad at myself
@CallMeDuraSouka its all just a bit bizzare isnt it
I will absolutely never ever pay any game company for early access. It's awful.
Is what I said here last month. I've seen acquired the premium upgrade. 😁
I feel dirty paying £31 just to play a game 5 days earlier than release but if this reviews well then Bethesda can have my bloody money.
I get why the release times are the way they are around the world so everybody gets to play the game at the same time but I could never be fully immersed into a game of this type at 1am in the morning, bad timing for Europeans but elsewhere are decent. Can’t wait until next Wednesday!
I caved and bought the premium content upgrade. Bethesda games aren't usually my cup of tea but I want to experience this. Probably because it's set in spaaaaaaace rather than fantasy.
I aren't so sure if this is a massive red flag but if starfield isn't amazing then Microsoft really are in trouble it needs to be great but I don't know anymore we will found out tomorrow either way
@Weebleman
I'm super curious what DF and EGs reviews will look like, this review release period should be entertaining!
@NeutronBomb Ugh, nothing like years of built up impatience and excitement to sweet talk you into it ...
@ApostateMage To be fair you're also getting the upcoming expansion as part of that as well.
@ApostateMage I've never been interested with early access... but the closer it gets, the more tempted I am. It's pulling me in...😬
Pleaseeee do not disappoint. Cant wait for this game. Will get it for pc.
Isnt it weird that theres been no proper in game gameplay shown yet?
I just find it strange that its only pre-selected trailers, and most likely its all PC footage rather than Series X footage.
No sites have said what system it was running on when they have seen gameplay from what I can see.
I pre-ordered the constellation edition as I fancy the watch. Not a touch screen but hey ho...
Shame there was no way of preloading it, especially with the patch.
As far as I know it's a digital download and not a disk
I thought this information was already posted. But whatever. Reviews go live tomorrow at 12 noon.
@Walrus_Slapper Was thinking the same. I'm waiting for the reviews tomorrow before I commit to buying into the early release.
@Kaloudz My memory had not held up very well, but I seem to recall Zenimax being a tad petty with outlets over the years and seemingly holding grudges.
You don't find it a little bit weird they would exclude an Xbox fan site?
@ApostateMage Iceland Xbox store is your friend
no I don't want an open world in gears , that's fine with me I've been playing gears of war since 2006 and every game was an epic experience.
@Spaceman-Spiff
EDIT: I was confusing Eurogamer with Digital Foundry, although I thought they were part of the same company
They have? I thought I saw a headline somewhere they had access before anyone else. Unless it was just limited access for their in depth technical analysis of the game.
In which case I can see Bethesda denying a pre-release game code if whatever they said was less than favorable.
1 am here an i got week off work!!! I be staying up to play with myself!! Can’t wait!!
DF is 'independent' from Eurogamer although they do have a partnership. If you watch the latest DF Direct, particularly around the 'Starfield' chat, they actually talk about them receiving code as an 'independent' outlet from Bethesda US - Bethesda UK seemed to be the 'problem' with Review codes - maybe not sure if they or MS were expected to deal with that side in the UK - maybe some 'miscommunication' because EG got 'review' code after asking...
It seems 'odd' that Bethesda would send a copy of the Game to the 'Fairest' source that will go over the game from a technical perspective with a fine tooth comb. If they were 'concerned' about reviews being 'harsh' due to 'bugs/glitches', poor optimisation etc, I could understand it - but the reality is that DF are 'impressed' and in general, the reviews are ALL positive.
The game hasn't officially released yet, but you can play it (early access Premium Edition) now. Even when it does 'officially' release, you don't have to spend £70 to play to 'try' it out for yourself, make up your 'own' mind.
In the 'little' I have played so far, it is by far the 'best' Bethesda game I have played at Launch. That's not the 'subjective' part (whether I enjoy the story, the Game-play loop etc), that's purely the technical side, the solid performance, the responsiveness of the controls, how 'combat' feels etc.
It is a 'Bethesda' game, which has their DNA running through it. That means that the things you 'love' or 'hate' about Bethesda (apart from their 'typical' buggy and unoptimised launches) is 'present' in this game. The amount of 'junk' you can pick up, becoming over encumbered, that 'freedom' to play whatever 'role' you want in that setting etc, it even 'looks' like a Bethesda game - like Arkane have their own 'look' too.
If you are a 'fan' of Bethesda RPG's, as long as the 'setting' appeals, this is unlikely to 'disappoint'. Combat feels 'better' than Fallout combat too so overall its a big 'step up' and why I think its the 'best' game Bethesda have released. Of course, if you don't 'like' their style of RPGs, then this may not be 'for you' but for fans of 'Bethesda' RPG's, this is what you probably expected with more polish and far less bugs...
Only now realized it will be available from this night (more like tomorrow). In my mind I thought it was a week later from the early access.
@GamingFan4Lyf I still have to go back and complete Skyrim...and Fallout 4 (holding out for an upgrade).
I am 11 hours into Starfield and digging it. Work & family stuff kept me from playing more. I'm playing on "Very Hard" to keep things interesting.
I paid for the early access and I actually cannot wait till it actually arrives on gamepass tomorrow
Because
I won't have to play another game pass game to
A ) play a game pass game +3 points
B) unlock an achievement in any game pass game +50 points
Just To earn 53 Microsoft points for the Microsoft reward although saying that Monday and today I didn't have too
@Lucylu1983 That's funny, because I had a similar thought last night — "Well, I guess I'll be getting the '+50 for a daily achievement' award more consistently now..."
