During today's 'TDU Connect' event, developer KT Racing has finally revealed real gameplay of Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown. The presentation started out with a short, sizzle reel-style trailer before the dev team presented a lengthy demo - showcasing open world driving, racing, player houses, clubs and more.
All of the footage up above is in-game, taken from an alpha build of the title. There's clearly still work to be done here regarding the game's performance, but frame rate aside, we're pretty impressed by what we've seen here.
Solar Crown looks like it retains plenty of old Test Drive Unlimited DNA, especially with the game's focus on a huge open world and the luxurious side of driving, including collecting some of the biggest and best cars out there to show off to your friends and challenge them to races.
For now, the team is aiming for an 'early 2024' launch — as we reported on last week — with a pre-launch closed beta coming soon. The delay out of 2023 is unfortunate, but the game does look like it needs a bit more polish time, and it's good to see the team afforded that luxury.
When that time does arrive, you'll be able to cruise around Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown's rendition of Hong Kong Island on Xbox Series X and S.
Does this look like an open world racer you'd love to try out? Let us know your thoughts on the team's debut gameplay footage!

Kinda looks more like a mix between NFS and Forza Horizon than the old TDU games.
@BeerIsAwesome I think the physics look more arcadey, disappointingly arcadey to be honest.
These FPS though ...
Test Drive used to be my go to racing game as far back as the PS1.
Really hoping it turns out great.
It looks absolutely terrible. The visuals are barebones and from yesteryear, the framerate is janky and the steering seems stiff.
Good to see Alan with VVV in the video! One of the best-humored guys in the biz ...
I've liked all the previous titles in this franchise and this looks like more. I think it looks fun and could provide some decent racing environments. Its alpha atm so I'm sure frame rates can improve. Definitely interested in this and glad the devs are pleased to show a lot of the game off like this - a 3 minute cut trailer of selected scenes (like motorsport at the last show) shows very little, but this gives you more idea of the genuine game.
@Titntin I'm in a similar boat! It might not scream 'next-gen' but those frames should be cleaned up by launch and I'm sort of glad it still looks like a TDU game. I was half expecting them to take the name and just make ANY open world racer, but, for better or worse this looks like TDU3 if it launched as an Xbox One game right after 2 😄
Geez, with all that gringe happening, I just cannot concentrate on what is being shown.
I'm not that impressed, tbh.
They didn't show anything that made me go wow.
I'm guessing "early 2024" is going to be more like "summer 2024" meaning this game is still a year away.
I'm not mad at it. It claims to be Alpha footage, and it shows. The game looks far from complete.
That said, it does look a lot like TDU2 from years and years ago, which is both a good and a bad thing. I really liked TDU2, but I don't think Forza Horizon was even a thing at that time. They have quite the uphill battle now. It's gonna have to do a hell of a lot more than it did before to compete.
Looks like another NFS clone...
The delay doesnt surprise me. What with Crew Motorstorm and Forza Motorsport due out any time soon, NFS Unbound on gamepass...the delay means next year they may pick up the bored driving players instead of competing for sales this year.
@JayJ champ, it's ment to be Arcadey literally every title they've released has been Arcade.... Don't people think before putting their foot in their mouths?
@Bartig The gameplay is from the Alpha stage, so they have plenty of time to smooth things out. I'm quite excited about this.
@Smoothmarkymark Sounds like you have never played any of the TDU titles. They were never arcade racers.
