Well, this is a big development! According to Polish site interia, Microsoft has entered an agreement to develop a new AAA Xbox title with People Can Fly; the team behind Outriders, Gears of War: Judgment and other multiplatform titles.
According to the report, 'Project Maverick' has been allocated a budget of roughly 30-50 million dollars, and will be a game "based on the intellectual property rights of the publisher" - in this case Microsoft.
We're not sure if that means the title will be based on an existing Xbox IP, or whether the partnership will spawn a new IP, but it'll seemingly be under Xbox ownership either way. Microsoft looks to be throwing some serious weight behind the project too.
People Can Fly's last game was 2021's Outriders, followed up by last year's huge 'Worldslayers' expansion for the co-op third person shooter. Hopefully we hear more details on Project Maverick soon - some official confirmation from Xbox would be lovely.

Good for People Can Fly, didn't mind Outriders and it had some good ideas, and Square treated them terribly so it's good for them to be away from that abusive relationship!
That would be dope, they did bulletstorm as well which I loved.
And here I thought their relationship with Square was doing so well.
Seriously though they have prior Gears experience and this says it's an MS IP so it's not too hard to believe they'd be working on another Gears project as it fits their area of expertise so closely.
I know Gears is popular, but personally I think it's kind of had it's day and has aged a bit, so I'm not super into it if that's it, but it should be popular all the same. I'm probably more burned out of "gears halo forza" due to living on the internet though
Xbox seems to be operating at full power. With Phil talking of humble confidence toward 2024 and the huge success of their showcase, it feels they've got the wind at their sails. The doom and gloom bigrade did their best to pressure xbox into folding, but when they've got the kind of games we saw at the showcase, it's all a matter of how they play their hand. I'm very excited.
And let's look it like this, games taking 4 to 6 years to be made would suggest Sony are hitting their dry spell, with many fans hoping they were holding back, I suspect they'll be disappointed. Whereas xbox actually did hold back, given the statement by Phil who said Inexile and Complusion games were ready to show last year but they held off, gotta question what else they held off on. Matt sounded confident on the 4 games a year and I believe it. You could easily have Hellblade, Inexiles game (forgot the name haha) Avowed, and Complusions games in 2024, only to have gears, fable, Id game, etc a year after. On top of Activision games if the deal gets passed. Xbox boasting of being more valuable than the 360 era. The loud minority has almost convinced us that it was all about to die, well, they were probably getting confused with playstation.
Console sales are important and earn bragging rights, yet active users is the lifeblood and gamepass is very much alive and thriving. Also noticed an increase in second hand PS5's in shops recently. Dry spells are death, xbox had it in 2022, luckily gamepass sustained them.
@Moonglow that Towerborne game looked really fun, that is a good shout! I like that list, there probably is more you've missed for sure and more coming.
How dare you, @NEStalgia. 🤣
people can fly are already making a sony exclusive live service game
@Kaloudz you're not wrong, some AAA games go well above US$ 100 million. But budgets can vary a lot depending on the scope of the game, Resident Evil 4 surely did not cost as much as Starfield... and a game developed in Poland might be cheaper than one developed Stateside, where wages are higher.
Man I had so much fun with Outriders. This article reminded me that I purchased Worldslayers ages ago and have still yet to jump in. It has been bumped up my backlog.
¿Maybe their rumored PlayStation game fell through and they brought it up to Microsoft?
@Magabro @Kaloudz also when we hear about 100 million or more budgets, marketing is included. So far this sounds like how much MS is paying the developer to make the game.
That aside, at everyone: calm expectations because anything this is about won’t see the light of day for anywhere between 3 or even 6 years.
That’s a nice budget if it’s 50 mil I just hope the movement isn’t floaty
Hi, my name is Sam and it has been 3 days since the last time I turned on my PlayStation… less and less single player games and I can’t stop thinking about the new black Xbox S. I am avoiding my PS friends as they are so emotional and started looking at PureXbox all day… I am having dreams of Starfield…
Anonymous - Sam is not my real name
I absolutely loved Outriders as a co-op game with my wife and a buddy of ours, although not being able to jump was annoying. We still laugh about the cutscene transitions to new areas, hopping over small cracks.
That said, TIME TO SPECULATE WHAT IP OF THE PUBLISHER?!
My money is on a co-op looter reboot of Blinx the Timesweeper
Gears, probably. Though it'd be a bit late to get started on Gears 6, so it is likely another side story or spinoff.
Whatever it MIGHT be (as it isn't confirmed to exist as a project), this is exactly how a 2nd-party title comes to be.
@Kezelpaso Didn't Take Two scrap a partnership/project with People Can Fly fairly recently? I wonder if this is that game.
Edit: They did! Or at least, one or both of the parties involved terminated the partnership. It was known as Project Dagger. It's not out of the realm of possibilities that Microsoft swooped in and the project's name and direction were altered.
If I was MS I would definitely buy this company they put out solid games.
@Jark it is confirmed. Pure Xbox is being a bit too cautious with these news, but if you check Eurogamer, you'll learn that People Can Fly actually made an official statement on the Polish site Interia Biznes. And it turns out that Interia is not just a random gaming news and rumours website, it's actually a business site and the statement was made by People Can Fly's Management Board.
Mechhassult 3 confirmed 🤣💚
@Magabro Thank you, though I would appreciate a news website being explicit with their information and not relying on a fellow patron, such as yourself, to elaborate.
