The free Mercenaries DLC for the Resident Evil 4 Remake has gone live on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S today, and it's been joined by a new update which has made various alterations to the base game.
Crucially, the dead zone has been reduced on both consoles - a reaction to numerous reports that the controls weren't responsive enough - and apparently the game now benefits from improved frame rates as well.
[XSX|S]
- The dead zone (the range in which the controller’s sticks don’t respond to movement) has been reduced, resulting in more responsive controls.
- Adjusted graphics rendering processes, resulting in improved game framerates.
Based on early impressions, it seems the dead zone fix has left Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S players somewhat satisfied, although there are plenty who would still like to see further improvements.
The big concern coming out of this patch relates to the visuals on Xbox Series X specifically:
We're assuming Digital Foundry will be running tests on the new update in the near future, so we'll let you know if anything particularly interesting comes out of that. In the meantime, tell us your experiences with the update below.

Super thankful for the controls being fixed, I can actually do the shooting gallery without low-key rage quitting
I didn’t have an update. Is this not live yet?
Well done developers mess up VRR resolution in some way going on what was said in the article.
I do wonder about developers and development of games now a days.
That Sony parity amirite?
They dropped the visuals to PS5 level because they were better on Series X. Sony admitted they watch and pay attention to Digital Foundry.
Sony, the parity samaritans...
Frame rate was VERY shaky before and it needed to be fixed. It was typically 45-50fps on XSX, didn't get close to 60fps even in frame rate / 'performance' mode. It was so bad it would even drop to the mid 30s frequently causing issues even with VRR displays.
If fixing that means lowering the graphical fidelity to get a smoother framerate so be it. But it would be good to have a choice. And a better VRR mode for those of us with HDMI 2.1 TVs to get the best of both worlds.
Regardless seems like all versions of this game still need more work.
It's nice that they fixed the deadzone issue and now playing on Resolution Mode feels more stable framerate but the pop in textures are a lot more noticeable and bigger in number also. And the pixelated water/blurry look to the water is still an issue on Resolution Mode (assuming it's something to do with the RT as it's not present on Framerate mode)
So some stuff has improved but needs more work overall for sure.
