The fantastic former Xbox Game Pass title Streets Of Rage 4 has received a major free update on Xbox consoles (and other platforms) today, making over 300 improvements to the game while also adding some new features!
There are way too many patch notes for us to list them all, but some of the biggest new additions include:
Major Update - R08 Changelog:
Stages:
- Added some destroyable to help to maintain the combo counter
Combo counter:
- Added a half second to disappear
- Stage transitions have a bonus time to not break the combo counter
Added Custom Survival Mode:
- Players can tweak his/her survival experience with a variety of options.
Mania +:
- Added Cursed arcades in Mania+ difficulty.
- Added special reinforcements during boss battles.
- Added One life.
- The score to get an extra life is higher in the arcade mode.
Added coop attack:
- Hold 'Pick up' and grab your partner to throw him.
- Airborne player can press a special button to perform a unique attack.
All characters:
- Lots of reduced hit stop
- All charged attacks and normal combo last hits can hit multiple enemies after the first active frames even if an enemy is hit
- Fixed a bug where some wall bounces could do no damage
- Increased stun on air-down attacks
- Throws will hit the other enemies close to the player with more consistency
The rest of the patch notes are focused around improvements for (many) individual characters, as well as enemies. If you want to see the entire list, DotEmu has published it on the game's official Steam page.
Streets of Rage 4 has been discounted across most platforms this week to coincide with this update, but unfortunately Xbox isn't one of them. Still, we'd highly recommend it even at its base £20.99 / $24.99 price!

This game is great. I got to the last level and it became increasingly obvious that I shouldn't be playing alone. Never did finish it.
I beat this game around 15 times or more. It’s in my top 10 games of last generation. I am happy to see them improve it and really would love to see a Part 5. I find this game WAY better than the turtles beat em up and WAY WAY better than Battletoads. Might have to play it to see the update, i am 2 achievements away from having them all, but they are near impossible.
@theduckofdeath I had the same issue until I had a buddy join & we stomped those last two levels together. Great game! Wish more devs did what DotEmu does (looking at you 343!)
@Green-Bandit I agree, Turtles was nostalgic but SOR4 was a great evolution without changing too much fundamentally. And the soundtrack is on par with SOR2 imo. I'd rather play this than a traditional beat em up.
@TJ81 i agree man for sure. Not saying Turtles was bad per se. But yeah it was riding the nostalgia train pretty hard. I played it on GP and thought it to be ok to above average. SOR4 was special, very much a top game of the generation for me. I could play it over and over and just not get bored of it. Still wish i would have gotten the last 2 achievements. The DLC was done right also.
I was playing this solo and couldn't get past the cop boss in his office. :/ Need to give it another shot but clearly I wasn't grasping something.
@Green-Bandit What last two achievements do you think are impossible?
@Azathoth maybe not impossible but i am missing Perfect, never take a hit, i have come close but haven’t tried all that many times and maniac, which is a S rank on all stages hard or higher, i am close but there’s like 2-3 left that i just can’t seem to do better than A. They aren’t impossible but for me i found them hard and tedious. Overall great game and every once in a while i still go back to play it. Would buy a part 5 day one.
@Green-Bandit Oh yes, those are hard ones, along with the wave 30 survival mode one. All require you to repeat specific blitz moves rather than play the game organically like you normally would. For the perfect one, play with Floyd on easiest and only use his standing shock special.
@Azathoth i will have to try that with Floyd, great recommendation, thanks. Yeah i games to have good achievement list. This game does for sure. As much as i love Red Dead 2 and Gears of War, those achievement lists are just insane to me. I have 100’s of hours into the game and like 25% of the list done. I wish playing and beating a game was 40-50% of the list and then have the other half doing whatever for the completion. But i will try that and i got to level 30 in the DLC by luck i suppose cause it’s not something i can do every time to say the least.
