The first ever Xbox Developer Direct is now officially in the books, and regardless of what you might have thought of the actual content of the event, it seems the majority of Xbox fans have been very pleased with the new show format.
Social media was flooded with comments along these lines during the livestream yesterday, which promoted VP of Xbox Games Marketing Aaron Greenberg to thank everyone for their "kind notes".
If you didn't get a chance to watch it, we were treated to 43 minutes of deep dives for Redfall, Forza Motorsport, Minecraft Legends, The Elder Scrolls Online and a surprise from Tango Gameworks in Hi-Fi Rush. Unlike typical Xbox events, there were no hosts for this one, with the individual studios leading the show instead.
It sounds like we'll be seeing many more Xbox Developer Direct events in the future, then, and we're all for it! Next up though, we've got a Starfield showcase in the works from Bethesda, followed by Xbox's summer showcase for 2023.
What did you think of the format of the Xbox Developer Direct? Let us know down in the comments.

Format was fine, just need to have more content next time although I'm liking the look of redfall now..
The format was excellent. Giving developers the chance to talk a bit more in depth about their game should be how its done, instead of 1-2 minutes of CGi or gameplay trailers, where nobody knows whats going on.
Thoroughly enjoyed it. They were upfront with what to expect, delivered on the expectations and threw in a quality surprise as well. Definitely the way for MS to deliver more of these moving forwards.
Xbox should definitely do more of these
Excelent format for future.
That Hi-Fi Rush shadowdrop was excelent and only negative thing was no firm date for Forza Motorsport.
2023 is shaping to be great year for Xbox overall.
Perfect format. Set expectations before the event. Then set expectations at the start of the event 4? no! 5 games.
Had a great mix of gameplay and developer insights. It was clear they had spent a lot of time, and probably money, getting this right. That's appreciated, but also probably hard to put a production together like this too often.
Format was outstanding I hope this is the format moving forward.
You know Xbox they get it spot on and amazing acceptance and acknowledgement and then some d*** changes it 😂
@Deljo but that is the format? Fewer games with more time. I'd say what they need is to make these regular events so we can see more of what theyre up to.
I liked this Format - get actually devs to 'present' their own games in the way they want and 'set' expectations in advance. Even managed to 'surprise' - although maybe would have had more impact if it hadn't leaked - but was still a Surprise launch.
Older games, like Goldeneye and AoE2 got their own 'release' video's and 3rd Party Devs are handling their own marketing - Atomic Heart for example has been releasing their own info so I was OK with them not showing these 'between' each developer showcase.
Presentation wasn't the 'best' from some Developers but they are NOT natural presenters but overall, the pacing was good and kept me watching the entire thing - even though I have little/no interest in ESO, Minecraft, Hi-fi Rush and 'expected' Forza Motorsport to be a 'typical' Sim Racer and pretty much just tell you what 'incremental' improvements they are bringing to a very 'formulaic' Game. That isn't a 'criticism', but you know what the 'game-play' loop is, its the 'same' loop as every other Racing Sim type game - you know pretty much what to expect, so its just incremental improvements.
Redfall was really all I was interested in and yet I enjoyed the whole presentation...
@elpardo1984 for me the format was based on showing the games without the usual talking heads etc but either way the outcomes the same - we need more games
i think they could trim it further. 5mins a game.
there was a bit of developer waffle in minecraft and FM to drag it out.
showing 4/5 games is good.
@Dezzy70 never been more truer words HAHA
I really enjoyed the show and while not every game is for everybody it was exactly what they said it would be.
Never gave ESO a glance till watching this yesterday so now im excited to give it a try this weekend. Just the mention of Morrowind and you can play it in single player had me reaching for the controller
Format was prefect and the cuts and overlays also very stylish and fitting. Great identity and personality, really hope they keep it up, although they need to come up with a policy to have dates on every one of the games.
Think Forza won’t make it until November? Set that date now and twist the news cycle on its head when suddenly you just announce, not a delay, but an advance “due to development going smoother than we thought, Forza is now launching June 20th!”
Nintendo innovated this style many moons ago now. Not a great surprise that both Xbox and Sony have ‘borrowed’ that approach.
It was polished but it was hardly a mind blowing number of games. Xbox is still very much a third party console.
@Green-Bandit
Let’s hope this time they keep the format.
I guess a lot depends on USA acceptance of it as well. Xbox like to keep the home grown crowd happy.
@Dezzy70 this is true, but they are hearing a lot of love in the feedback. I think they know and the fans know this is a winner. Let’s hope they stay with it and bring some more big games to E3. I want to see Fable and Gears and i am all set. Cause god knows Rockstar ain’t trying to give me Red Dead 2 next Gen.
@Green-Bandit
Gears 6 please.
I loved it. But Apparently some Xbox fans are mad they didn’t show starfield at the event they said they wouldn’t show starfield at. And are also mad there were no surprises.. I guess Hi-Fi Rush being announced and launched doesn’t count? I don’t understand people sometimes. Lol
@Dezzy70 can’t wait for Gears 6 , with the power of the Series consoles and Unreal 5, it should look insane. Just hope it has good story and modes, and please for the love of god stop making a dumb near impossible achievement list. I played 500 hours of Gear 5 and had like 30% of the list. I know i know this is a small detail that in the end don’t matter. But Gears and Red Dead are my favorites and both have an achievement list that is next to impossible. I will just end this rant now, cause i could go on and on for what achievements and trophies should look like, and the fact we should be able to delete games and remove the points and trophies from our profile completely.
@Green-Bandit
I think my June 2022 last year release prediction is pretty much set in stone now.
Redfall before June 2023, correct
Forza August / September 2023, Looking right
Starfield November 2023, looking right.
😂😂😂
@Dezzy70 you are pretty close on all 3, i still am holding out for Starfield in July or August, even tho thats not a month big games normally see release. So you may take that one also. Dude i am liking what i see of Redfall. I think that is really going to be my big game until Diablo 4. Once D4 releases i won’t care much what goes on for a few months.
@Green-Bandit
Redfall is my sort of game. Good fps with some exploration and side quests as well.
I know the fps will be spot in as well.
And of course vampires 🧛♂️
I see some have been moaning about the graphics, but they have a little point.
But these new generation consoles are not super powerful PCs.
If you want to run pure real 4K native at a locked 60fps with HDR and VRR then something has to give a bit.
Yes HFW probably the best looking console open world game runs now where near a true native 4K at locked 60fps. There are more visual tricks and coding going on than a magician performs.
So even though these consoles are powerful they are not what I call super powerful machines.
The best graphics on these consoles at true native 4K locked 60fps will be racing games.
Hence why Forza looks so good.
@Dezzy70 they aren’t super powerful, but they are also not fully learned and optimized yet, that comes a little later in the generation as we all know. I still think the art style in Redfall is plenty good to carry it. Yeah 4K 60 is still even hard to do on PC at times. I watched a video about why Starfield will be hard to hit 60 on Series X, and it even said that ultra high settings on PC will be very demanding and most won’t be able to achieve it. Forza looks great of course, Gears 6 will be the first game that drops jaws on series X. I need that game bad.
