Former PlayStation exclusive The Pathless is finally taking flight on Xbox consoles next week!
The game, which was developed by the team behind the excellent ABZU, released to pretty impressive reviews back in 2020, racking up a Metacritic high of 81% for the PC version. It's now coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S digitally, with the release date set for February 2nd, 2023.
In the game, you'll take on the role of a master of archery, hunting corrupted spirits, solving puzzles and taking part in "epic battles". Here's a bit more about what you can expect:
"Become the Hunter, a master archer who travels to a mystical island to dispel a curse of darkness that grips the world. Soar through the air and forge a connection with your eagle companion. Perform fluid acrobatics and execute awesome trick shots with a unique archery system that allows effortless shooting while moving at high speeds. The Godslayer won’t rest until the world is destroyed. Your bond with your eagle and the fate of the world hang in the balance."

Does anything ever leap from Xbox to Playstation?
@Romans12 Plenty of games have. Like those already mentioned. Mass Effect, Cuphead, Bastion, etc..etc. Both gaming giants lose exclusives to each other.
@Moonglow
Death’s Door and Sable too
Huh, I felt sure that it had already come to PlayStation...
@Romans12 Xbox does 3-6 months exclusivity and typically the games are in Game Pass (like Tunic). I think Death's Door may have been exclusive (not on Game Pass).
Playstation does 1 year (minimum) to "Never coming to Xbox" exclusivity. PC often gets dragged into it, too.
The Pathless is a phenomenal game, still one of my favorite PS5 experiences.
The Pathless is an amazing game. One of the first non-AAA PS5 games I played this console generation and is still probably my favourite. I highly recommend this to anyone who didn't get a chance to play on PlayStation or PC.
Amazing game, unique. Plus another stellar Austin Wintory (Journey) soundtrack. Not without a few flaws but I loved it.
@Romans12 So many timed exclusive games on both sides. Agree with @theduckofdeath that Microsoft is USUALLY smaller indies for Game Pass and 3-12 months exclusivity. Whereas Sony is often larger games for longer exclusivity. Shame on both sides really.
@themightyant I can't think of anything on MS that a full year of exclusivity since RoTR. If you can, please post. My recollection is mainly Game Pass titles (mostly indies) with 3-6 months of exclusivity.
I do think it will get worse, though. Things may slide backwards towards PS2/Xbox era exclusivity. Sony will not relent, and MS can't continue to get Square-Enix's and Team Ninja's doors slammed in their face.
@theduckofdeath I agree it's usually not as long as 12+ months but there are some that are over a year and not on PS yet e.g. The Gunk, Moonglow Bay, Echo Generation, Exo One, Crossfire X... not that many will be clamouring for that last one, but exclusives are exclusives good or bad... see Forspoken...
And several GOTY/Award nominees from 2022 are already over 6 months and counting e.g. Immortality, Powerwash sim, etc. We'll have to wait and see when those release. I believe the last one is due soon.
Looking forward it will be interesting to see how Microsoft plays it with things like Stalker 2, Warhammer 40K Darktide, Ark 2, etc. Are they going longer or not?
@GunValkyrian pretty sure that's happening.
@themightyant I'm pretty sure there is no way Immortal has been out for 6 months already. Nobody is missing much with The Gunk or Crossfire X. Those games you mentioned may be part of ID@Xbox. Tiny productions where I'm not sure of MS's full involvement. Nothing on the scale Nioh1&2, Nier: Automata, FF Remake (all parts), Rise of Ronin, or even Forespoken. Sony also likes to put the kibosh on the PC releases, at times.
Funny that Forespoken turned out to be underwhelming and Sony paid to keep it off of Xbox for 2 years. 🤨
@theduckofdeath I already agreed with you in my first post that Sony is usually larger titles for longer. That is indisputable. My point was that Microsoft do more than the 3-6 months you said, that's incorrect.
E.g. Immortality was released June 2022, it's now 7 months coming up on 8 in Feb. Several are over a year.
These deals usually happen early in a game's life so there is no guarantee if the platform holder is going to get an exclusive that is a GOTY contender like FF7R, Immortality, Outer Wilds or a duff like Crossfire X Forspoken & Babylon's fall. That's the risk they take. But whether a game is AAA or indie through ID@Xbox / PS Indies, whether it's good or bad, it's still an exclusive.
I'd probably argue that Sony spends more money on higher profile marquee AAA exclusives, and for longer exclusivity, which gets the column inches and understandably more ire from gamers.
But Microsoft does PLENTY of exclusivity deals too, e.g. over a third of the games included in Xbox's 'E3' 2022 are timed exclusives. Agreed they are usually lower profile and for less long. But frankly they are usually better received and, off the top of my head, often GOTY contenders (e.g. Death's Door, Outer Wilds, Tunic, Inside, Immortality, Bastion, Unpacking, Braid etc.).
Personally, as a believer that gaming should be more inclusive not exclusive, we gamers would be better off with less of ALL these types of exclusivity deals.
@themightyant Immortality came to GP on 8/30/2022, so it's been only 5 months now. You almost convinced me I Rip Van Winkle'd most of 2022. 😄 Still have to complete that one. We'll watch and see if it comes to PS in Feb-Mar.
Maybe you're thinking of As Dusk Falls, which came out in July. That one is Microsoft published, so I don't think it is going to other consoles.
