Ready for the Dead Space remake? The game launches as soon as tomorrow (January 27th) for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and the review embargo has just lifted, so we've got a bunch of impressions to bring your way.
Unfortunately, our review won't be ready until after launch as we were unable to obtain a review code prior to release despite our best efforts. We'll work to bring you some hands-on thoughts as soon as we can.
In the meantime, here's what the early reviews are saying about Dead Space so far:
Windows Central (5/5)
"This remake faithfully takes Visceral Games' 2008 science-fiction horror tale and rebuilds it for a modern generation of hardware. Improvements are made to the gameplay, story, and presentation where necessary, all while preserving the spirit and atmosphere that made the original experience so compelling."
GameSpot (9/10)
"The new side quests might leave a lot to be desired, but every other addition contributes to a remake that stays true to its progenitor while also improving upon it in a number of ways."
IGN (9/10)
"It’s clear that this superb Dead Space remake has been a labour of love for the team at Motive Studios, who’ve very carefully balanced innovation and renovation with preservation, and to their credit the end result is undoubtedly the definitive way to experience – or re-experience – one of the best survival horror shooters that Capcom never made."
COGconnected (87/100)
"Although the visual update makes each step a disquieting nightmare, the enhancements made to the combat and narrative are what make the real difference. While the game carefully follows the path laid by the original, the number of refinements makes this the definitive version."
Push Square (8/10)
"Dead Space has been brought back in the most faithful manner possible. With the fantastic base experience still very much intact, EA Motive has expanded on it with new content, expanded areas, and more mechanics to help deliver on the vision the game's original creators had 15 years ago.
Compared to more modern titles — and other remakes from a similar period — Dead Space disappoints with visuals that fail to justify why it's a current-gen only release. However, it's still a great game to play in 2023, and new quests and mechanics provide more than enough reason to go back to a survival horror classic."
TheGamer (4/5)
"Improved performance, a greater incentive to explore, and a crux of combat and scares combine to turn what was once a horror classic into a modern gem. Shame it’s a bit too easy, though."
The Dead Space Remake is off to a fantastic start, then, and although Metacritic and OpenCritic are still calculating their final averages, it looks like it's going to sit somewhere around the 80-90 or even 85-90 mark when all's said and done, which is a very impressive score! Definitely worth considering a purchase...
