While we were a little disappointed in Ninja Theory's no-show at The Game Awards 2022, it seems we won't have to wait long to hear more about the team's upcoming projects - a slate that of course includes Hellblade 2. In a short and sweet Christmas message, the team has revealed that it will be bringing back more "dev diaries" in the new year.
This is very welcome news, as things have been a little quiet on the Hellblade 2 front in recent months. Ninja Theory delivered an incredible preview of its upcoming sequel at TGA 2021, but was notably absent from the awards show this year.
As for what exactly will be shown off in these dev diaries, we haven't been informed on that just yet. A few years ago the team showcased how it was working on the game's audio out in Iceland, but that was before we'd seen any proper gameplay on Hellblade 2.
These dev diaries could also deliver some more info on another upcoming Ninja Theory title: Project Mara. We first heard about this one way back in January 2020, with the team showing us bits and pieces of the game since, albeit in a more 'behind-the-scenes' capacity.
After a quiet 2022, we're very much looking forward to hearing more from any of Xbox's Game Studios - Ninja Theory absolutely included!
What would you like to see from Ninja Theory in the new year? Let us know in the comments below.

Wasn’t this game used to promote the release of the series x. Baffling that it is still not out yet.
Reminds me, I still need to play the first game!
@Amin1998
Yes it was and if Ninja Theory hadn't made a couple Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and Hellblade 1, all of which are great games, I'd be a little bit concerned. Still hyped but it is disappointing that it's not ready by now.
How long do these studios think that teasing and promising to show stuff someday is going to work? How can they be SO tone deaf as to not understand that Xbox owners might be a LITTLE sick and tired of teases and promises?
@Amin1998 yes, along with the Halo: Infinite ‘slipspace’ engine trailer it was one of our first looks at XSX over 3 years ago.
Sadly the next time we really heard anything about Hellblade 2 it was a dev diary in Jun 2020 showing location scouting in Iceland, which let us know just how far away the project really was.
Everwild another culprit of showing far too soon. Between those and CGIs for Avowed, Fable etc. Xbox has built a reputation for not releasing.
Hence was sensible to only show the next 12 months at the last E3. Hopefully at this next E3 we will start to see some of these again.
@Amin1998 Considering it was also revealed to be an UE5 game and that UE5 was still in pre-release beta stage at that time, not officially releasing until April 2022, its perhaps understandable that they haven't released yet. Fortnite only just got its UE5 update and was expected to be the 1st UE5 release...
@themightyant they needed to show something to get people excited about the series x. It’s a shame they had no games closer to release to actually market. Hopefullly Xbox can start putting out these triple an exclusives soon. 2023 is make or break after a very lacklustre 2022.
I will be skipping these dev diaries. I am already sold on the game and want as much surprise as possible.
Same for Redfall and Starfield. I've seen enough of them to be excited to play them, any more will just spoil a future surprise.
I don't think they know the release date for any of these games yet or are ready to commit to an official date.
Well being positive let’s hope this is the start of some Xbox games PR.
Along with some for Redfall, Forza and Starfield.
Wishful thinking we see this fall 2023, but would not be shocked if we don’t see it until fall or summer 2024.
@Amin1998 For sure they had to get people excited for XSX. It's just coming to bite them in the ass now as FAR too many of those games were 3-4+ years away. It's OK to have one or two, a healthy balance in fact, but not six to ten titles that are half a generation away. In hindsight it was clearly a little desperate as they didn't have them near ready yet.
But Microsoft did absolutely the right thing last year at E3 only showing the next 12 months. A great move. I think it will be the same next year, but perhaps at the in a year or two they can start having one or two extra things to look forward to beyond 12 months away. Balance is good.
Late 2024 for sure
People still living in false hope. I remember how so many people thought they'd show Avowed in the June showcase. Well that never happened lol
How many times do we see game reveals, and everybody is blown away by how good they look, only for them to release 3-4 years later and look no better than anything else released around that time?
@armondo36 Been asking myself this for a very long time.
My best release date guess is three months from who gives a crap. Are we supposed to get excited over Dev Diaries? Lol. Pathetic.
This still hasn't come out yet? Are they going to play that video sequence again where that giant dude is wrecking her crew, because they spammed the hell out of that ad.
Oh great, info. Sure as heck better be info lol! How about a release date!?
This will be a true next gen title when it releases. Something this console generation needs badly.
@armondo36
I see this as Microsoft's fault not Ninja Theory. Microsoft literally had to know the game was many years from release. Disappointing they announced it so early.
I stand by my opinion that unless a game is known to come out in the next year it should not be announced or talked about.
@Amin1998 yes, but due to Covid they could travel for taking the map pictures they wanted and i am sure they are wanting to polish this to death, cause a small part of me say’s Ninja Theory wants this to be one of the best looking games out there for a while to come. If that is true and I believe it is cause they want to show how much MS money helps a small studio create something huge and beautiful from the small games they were creating, then i give them a break to release it when it is ready.
I have a niggling feeling we won’t see any Xbox AAA exclusives for a long time! We’ve now been told Starfield, Redfall an Forza MS will release 1st qtr 2023. That’s in the next 12 weeks an we’ve seen or heard nothing!!! We’ll prob be lucky to have them before Xmas 2023!! Playstation is already way ahead, in the next 12 months they could be well out of sight!!!
MS could have showed a trailer for Hellblade 2 and one other first party title at the Game Awards. I understand not wanting to show Starfield and Redfall again, as there would be pressure for release dates.
First game as boring felt like a demo … games needs more action and less walking around and looking
@NeoRatt 100% agree. Microsoft has a terrible habit of announcing games FAR too early. Part of it is probably because they literally weren't working on ANYTHING for several years, but man is it annoying.
