It's been a long while since we've seen anything noteworthy from the Metal Gear series, with the poorly received Metal Gear Survive being Konami's only proper release since famous creator Hideo Kojima left the company. However, is that all about to change in 2023?
In a developer spotlight piece by Japanese site Famitsu, Metal Gear Solid producer Noriaki Okamura has hinted at what's to come from Konami in the near future. The producer says that 2023 "is going to be a year with many announcements", including a "long awaited" reveal from the company.
Of course, that isn't confirmation of anything Metal Gear related, but, we're not sure what else could be considered 'long awaited' from Konami at this stage. Silent Hill is already undergoing its own revival following several announcements earlier this year, and now fans are eager to hear what's next from the Metal Gear franchise.
Knowing Konami's recent history it's probably best to temper any expectations for now but still, it's looking like Metal Gear could be thrust back into the spotlight sooner rather than later. Although, without Hideo Kojima at the helm, we have no real idea how any sort of series revival would turn out.
Are you hyped for more Metal Gear some day? Or are you more interested in Kojima's projects? Let us know!

Given what happened with Silent Hill, probably a safe guess that the long awaited announcement will be a PS5 exclusive remake of MGS1.
@Grumblevolcano Yep wouldn't surprise me.
To be honest, Metal Gear Solid is one of my top games of all time but without Kojima I suspect a remake would either lose what made it special or be too close to a remaster.
Also, part of what made it special was how much it achieved on a PS1 - keep that same gameplay and level design and I think it might feel claustrophobic and basic in comparison to today, so a remaster might ruin my sentimental attachment to MGS1 which was my favourite game as a young teenager...
Has everyone forgotten that this could be Castlevania and not MGS.
I've only played and completed one metal gear solid game and that was guns of the patriots on ps3. But if MGS 1 gets remade I will definitely be getting it and hopefully get into the series properly.
I hope they're bringing Metal Gear Solid 4 to the current gen.
Lets hope the 'long awaited' announcement is Konami selling all their video game IP to someone competent who actually cares.
Castlevania in particular. Metal Gear has run it's course, and without Kojima what would it really be?
Honestly, not sure if I would play any MGS game that Kojima is not involved with, not even a remaster. And we know he won’t ever again be involved with the IP.
please bring MGS I-IV with 4k support to xbox
I really want to be excited, but the potential for whatever they announce ending up as a timed, or full exclusive to Sony put a serious dampener on it.
At some point this year they said they were working on getting Metal Gear Solid HD Edition: 2 & 3 relisted digitally, so I'd imagine that's one of the smaller announcements.
@Snake_V5
Personally I hope it is Castlevania related (but guessing it's not). Would be happy for MGS fans if it's something for them, but I recently re-watched the excellent Vania series on Netflix and am chomping at the bit for another entry. Bloodstained was just fine, and all the 2D compilations have been nice too, but a proper Castlevania is long overdue.
@Snake_V5 I was thinking the same thing. There’s been rumors on both coming back so it could be either one.
This could also be the rumored MGS 3. That’s been the rumor I’ve heard for some time now. It also goes back and fourth between Xbox exclusive to PS exclusive. Time will tell what this is.
I wanted to like MGS: Survive, but it was just terrible. I have very low expectations of a new one.
I know I'm in the minority but I'd actually like to see a not Kojima lead Metal Gear. If it's bad, nothing really changes from how it is now and if it turns out well, we get one of of the most beloved game series back in business. What have we got to lose?
My prediction, remasters and remakes.
Remasters will come to everything, remakes will be Ps5 "timed" exclusive but won't come to xbox
@EvilSilentFrame If it is MGS 3, I'm glad they've chosen that one as a remake. I can't imagine what the jungle and environments will look like.
Could it finally be the long awaited arrival of Metal Gear Erotic Violence Pachinko? Dibs on the name Metal Ball Rex.
@Korgon "What have we got to lose?"
Seventy US Dollars, and hours of our time. . I don't even like Kojima, highly overrated prima Donna, but without him mgs is a mediocre military game. Though with V I was highly turned off by the bizarre end of ground zeroes, and massively turned off on V from the horror hospital into, to the ..... Jeep chased by Ifrit from FF? By the time I got to the open dessert I'd already stopped caring. But I'm convinced the only reason these games get any critical praise is Kojimas story telling. Which is kind of like high on lifes humor. You're either stoned enough to get it or you're not.
@Grumblevolcano Honestly that's a better result than any alternative I can think of.
@themightyant I can very unironically say "Sony should buy Konami"
@NEStalgia
Heh well I won't deny Kojima's games are definitely an acquired taste. MGS1 was legitimately the game that got me into gaming in the first place though so I just find it a bit sad to see it just collecting dust. Plus as synonymous with MGS as Kojima is, it wouldn't be the first Kojima-less directed MGS ever.
Portable Ops is honestly one of my favorites in the series and while I personally wasn't too fond of it I know people really like Revengance (I know, it's technically a spin-off but still.) Now yes obviously Survive missed the mark but hey 2/3 is pretty good right?😅
Point being I don't think it's as impossible as people seem to make about a Kojima-less Metal Gear. It just takes the right people involved. But like I said if it's bad we are just back to where we are now so why not I say!
im gonna go on an whim say it new castlevania game
How about a remake of Metal Gear, not Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear. Start off with the game that started it all. Would be fun to play that in 3D.
@Korgon Portable Ops was great but it was still made by Kojima productions and while he didn't direct, good old Hideo was still producer and co-writer, so that was still very much a Kojima game. That leaves only Revengeance which was very much a Platinum game themed like MGS.... It was great, but it's a Platinum game not really an MGS game at all. And then ... Survive....
I mean I'm a thoroughbred Kojima hater...I think MGS1 was his first and last great game... But....I really don't think MGS works without him. Even though V didn't work with him either. . Seriously I was about done with him after "there's a bomb in my ..." And reeeeaaalyy done with him with the hospital of horrors. And beyond done after fleeing Ifrit on a hellscape in a Jeep in a game about military ops and conspiracies. The only realistic sequel to that is a call of duty game where you play the whole thing as the dog.
@NEStalgia
Well to be fair, MGS1 had a dude with mind control and telekinesis powers, a giant man that has a strange spiritual connection to ravens, and a guy that can copy people's looks, voice, and even DNA to disguise himself perfectly. Plus clones galore! Oh and who can forget nanomachines? Or the infamous box trick?
MGS has always been pretty weird along with the more serious military bits of the story but that's always been part of its charm for me. Realistic in some ways yet completely bonkers in others.
And sure I know technically Kojima was still a producer on Portable Ops but he technically had the same role in Revengance. Point being he took more of a backseat on both games and both turned out well. It could happen again but we shall never know unless we try!
@Snake_V5 @biggiantcowfart the reason i don’t think it’s Castlevania and trust me i hope it is, one of my favorite series. But thats because Santa Monica studios said they would love to make Castlevania now that they completed work on God of War. That tells me it’s not under development somewhere else or he should know about it. Granted if he got to work on it it would be a PS5 exclusive. But i love the series and would love to see it come back in a huge way.
@Green-Bandit Which Castlevania did you like the most?
@Korgon MGS1 had the right amounts of weird in in context ways. After that or really after snake eater it just went off the rails.
Portable oops was made by Kojimas own company though. It's still his by nature. Rising was totally Platinum just with oversight.
@Green-Bandit SSM saying that means nothing though. How would Santa Monica saying they'd love to work on Castlevania mean anything? Unless they're already involved with Konami on it they have no idea what Konami it's or isn't working on. And honestly it seems unlikely Sony would be using a first party top studio to make a licensed niche ish game for Konami. Companies say all the time thyd love to make Zelda. Doesn't mean they ever will. Sony has moved beyond video game nerd culture. Their sights are on mass market pop culture sensations.
@Snake_V5 man that’s hard, has to be SOTN or Aria of Sorrow. But i loved most of them in their own way. Just hope they bring it back and do it right.
@NEStalgia maybe Corey made that comment knowing something or just wishful thinking. Sony for sure loves their big mass market games and spin them into shows and movies. But they will still have a few hardcore titles to please the loyal gamers. Everything points to Metal Gear on this, unless it’s a curve ball and Metal gear comes later, any company saying they want to make a nintendo franchise is 100% wishful thinking, Nintendo IP’s are beyond reach, but Konami is a realistic title request it seems. They are just sitting on them and have no talent to bring them to the masses. I am so hopeful we see Castlevania back and alive again.
@Green-Bandit Based on how many high profile devs have said they wanted to make Zelda or Metroid etc over the years, I think it's a lot more of a wishful thinking thing.
Though, honestly, I can't imagine how not Castlevania a Sony made game would be. It would be a serious grim dark vampire story, and the mass media zombie consuming market would gush over it and actual Castlevania fans would be displaced in favor of a new HBO-ized mass market darling. I think I'd rather it stay in Konami limbo....
@Widey85 the control and look of MGS1 is dated they would have to remake the game for todays gamers....kinda like RE1 if they fully remade that it would have been great but they kept same silly camera angles, same thing on MGS1 but worse....ive played it over the holdiays a tad with some family and when i say a little i mean a litte we moved on to MGS2...
@NEStalgia castlevania is essentially Dracula told from the hunters point of view, which would mean im pretty sure they have to get universals approval, i could be wrong but i believe they own the rights to the sliver screen monsters....
@NEStalgia As a very old Castlevania fan I can understand that sentiment. But the series has already re-invented itself somewhat. the original NES and GameBoy games are very different to the later games especially anything since Symphony of the Night which is now what people think of when they say 'Castlevania' and the half of the Metroidvania portmaneau, not games prior.
I think there is some room for reinvention as many of the greatest oldest games franchises from that era have done. Zelda, Mario, Metroid etc. and not just stick to the same old, dare I say slightly tired, Castlevania formula. There are now many better Metroidvanias anyway and the genre is pretty flooded.
Personally I loved the direction of the first Lords of Shadow. While it didn't tick all the boxes and was rough in some areas, there was still a lot to love and more importantly a lot of solid foundations to build on. Sadly the awful sequel, caused by chronic mismanagement, lack of pay/bonuses, and crunch, meant a hard stop to that line of the series.
Personally, in a perfect world, i'd like to see, and believe there is room for, both an old fashioned 2D Metroidvania style game and for someone bold and worthy to push it into new territory. SSM and Eric Williams step forward please
@themightyant Lord's of Shadow was fine, but also not a serious grimdark Western gritty mess and mercury stream clearly does "Nintendo style" better than normal Western studios. Frankly naughty dog and ssm are the two wannabe Paramount lots I'd rather keep far, far, far away from any series I actually care about. SSM wasn't always like that but they went hard into naughty dog emulation and I'm not sure they can make it out. I know it's popular and makes money in the mass market but I'd prefer niche series that matter to me stay niche than just move toward lowest common denominator. I'd rather play the erotic pachinko game than a gritty serious, horror vampire epic. If a Sony studio had to take it I'd much rather it be sucker punch. I'd say insomniac but they're stuck on Disney until the end of time
@NEStalgia Couldn't feel more differently. Especially after hearing Eric Williams reverence for Street Fighter and many other gaming franchises and his dissection of what makes those game great (from the FPS podcast). As he then named Castlevania as the series he'd most like to work on I think we'd be in safe hands, he'd treat the IP with reverence, and stay true to it. But each to their own.
