While we're still waiting on the final few releases of this week to generate some extra reviews and impressions from Xbox fans before we unleash our Pure Xbox Game of the Year coverage, Metacritic has been taking a look at the absolute worst-rated games of 2022 this week, and unfortunately there are some Xbox games amongst them.
You can probably guess one of them - CrossfireX was released back in February as an Xbox exclusive, but ended up suffering horrific reviews at launch. The real kicker is that the game has actually improved a lot since those initial reviews, but sadly the original Metacritic rating still stands, and therefore it continues to feature in the list.
Without further ado, here are the top ten worst-rated games of the year according to Metacritic. Any game with less than 7 professional reviews on the website has been excluded from this list.
- POSTAL 4 - No Regerts - 30 (PC)
- CrossfireX - 38 (Xbox Series X)
- Babylon's Fall - 41 (PS5)
- XEL - 43 (Nintendo Switch)
- LEGO Brawls - 46 (PS5)
- Zorro: The Chronicles - 49 (PS5)
- The Last Oricru - 50 (Xbox Series X)
- The Waylanders - 51 (PC)
- Kamiwaza: Way of the Thief - 52 (PS4)
- Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition - 52 (Nintendo Switch)
You may have noticed that some of the games in the rankings above are also available for Xbox, but are listed for different platforms. That's because Metacritic only includes the "lowest-scoring version" and omits the rest.
If you want to see the top ten worst-rated Xbox games according to the same rules, they are as follows:
- CrossfireX - 38 (Xbox Series X)
- The Last Oricru - 50 (Xbox Series X)
- Dragon Ball: The Breakers - 54 (Xbox Series X)
- Gungrave G.O.R.E - 56 (Xbox Series X)
- MX vs ATV Legends - 56 (Xbox Series X)
- DOLMEN - 56 (Xbox Series X)
- Matchpoint: Tennis Championships - 59 (Xbox Series X)
- Sonic Frontiers - 61 (Xbox Series X)
- Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong - 62 (Xbox Series X)
- Scorn - 64 (Xbox Series X)
As you can probably tell, a lot of Xbox games didn't actually manage to obtain at least seven professional reviews on Metacritic 2022, so the likes of Sonic Frontiers and Scorn are even creeping into the list above, which seems harsh.
Fortunately, there weren't too many stinkers this year — and even CrossfireX has begun to recover since!

The worse game I've played this year by far is Pentiment. Such a boring game.
M$ better do better next year no more excuses. Funny that a lot of the lower rated games were on Game Pass day one. Where is the quality control when selecting.
Yeah, Sonic Frontiers is a much better game than this reflects. It’s got some technical hiccups but it’s still one of my favorite games this year.
And FWIW, for a different perspective, I haven’t finished it yet but really enjoying Pentiment so far. It’s also one of the highest rated games of the year. So to each their own…
@purexbox Babylon's Fall didn't release on Nintendo Switch. It only came out on PC, PS4, and PS5
@anoyonmus Looking at Metacritic I think they meant to say the PS5 version.
In the top 10 worst for xbox, there are 4 games that came on Game Pass day one lol.
@Cyberpsycho it was an experiment to see if they can cure insomnia and it worked
For those slamming GamePass for the worst list for Day One adds, some of the highest rated games of the year also were on GamePass.
Persona 5 - 94
Norco - 91
Two Point Campus - 90
Immortality - 88
Return to Monkey Island - 87
TMNT - Shredder’s Revenge - 87
Pentiment - 86
Tunic - 85
Citizen Sleeper - 85
Tinykin - 83
But that doesn’t fit the narrative for some posters here…
@anoyonmus Typo, apologies!
I don't think ratings are a massive deal, as some people would have played some of these and thought they were good, and vice versa!
@Chaudy @Cyberpsycho See definitely shows Game Pass provides a variety for everyone, as I loved Pentiment.
Was slow to get going, but I found the irreverent story and historically accurate details pretty good - but then I always watch cutscenes and prefer story to gameplay in many cases...
Just the rub this year was with no big Xbox first party games, the variety didn't stack up for those Pentiment doesn't work for... Hopefully next year!
Only one I played was babylons fall and yeah it was awful, but somehow I still completed it. Got to a point where I was waiting an hour to get someone to join my mission.
@BBB
What a shame.
I enjoyed scorn and match point tennis gameplay felt great to me it's just the game was bare bones
I played through scorn in 3 days and had a great time with it 62 metascore ,I played persona 5 during one week and was so bored with it that I just quit playing 94 metascore, if the game runs well have decent performance and good controls the rest is just a matter of taste.
Damn, I didn't know Zorro: The Chronicles and The Last Oricru has such low scores. Gonna get them sooner or later anyways.
@Chaudy @Cyberpsycho couldn't disagree more.
Pentiment was a 2022 gaming highlight for me. Very intelligently made, a story based game where your choices "actually" matter, lovingly designed art style... I think it deserves every 9&10 it got.
To each their own.
@awp69 AI: Somnium Files Nirvana initiative wasn't on game pass. Only the 1st one is.
But your point stands. Some absolutely superb releases into game pass this year
@pip_muzz Ah, thanks for the correction. Thought it was.
Had no clue there was a new Postal.... I guess it flew under the radar.
I feel tempted to lol at Sony for wasting money on Babylon's Fall exclusivity, but.... Xbox paid for Crossfire X exclusivity... so... they even
Pentiment is a rare animal: a western visual novel. Most VNs are Japanese and non Japanese gamers aren't really familiar with the genre. It's less a game and more an interactive book with visuals so it plays like reading an interactive comic book with a choose your own ending. It's a very good VN, but someone looking for a typical "game"will find little there. As obsidian said it's a game that couldn't exist without GP.
What happened to Sonic frontiers though? All reviews I saw were very positive.
Sonic Frontiers and Scorn deserve much lower scores than the scores that were given out by PureXbox.
8/10 for Sonic Frontiers and 7/10 for Scorn.
I loved Scorn. 8/10 easy for me and one of the most memorable games this year, I get why some didn’t like it though. I dislike metacritic, it really shouldn’t be used in any sort of credible way to rate a games success or even quality.
While I get that some games do end up improving after disastrous launches (Crossfire X, Cyberpunk, No Mans' Sky, etc.) and that skews the review scores I think that if it changed, and scores were constantly updated we'd end up with more botched launches.
"Get it out the door, and we'll patch it later" is so easy to do now, and I think we need more and more disincentives to doing that.
Scorn was a real disappointment, reminded me of agony...
@Kaloudz agreed. Way too many review scores are from people who disliked a game 5 minutes in, without even giving the game a chance to get going. For example, when I started playing Digimob Survive on PC, I thought it was blech because the first 30-45 minutes was SO. MUCH. DIALOGUE. Once I pushed through all of it and finally got down to the gameplay, it was an alright experience…nothing to write home about (because I’m not usually into strategy games), but not nearly as bad as my first impressions.
@PhileasFragg I don't know if that would work. Look at Microsoft, their studios keep saying they want to show things when they're ready, and people keep pushing to show things now because "There is nothing big from Microsoft", but if they show quickly and have problems than it comes the "Best is have delayed" narrative. People want super ultra high quality games in short time. This doesn't exists.
Just look at Sony: Horizon Zero Dawn took 7 years in the making, then forbidden west took less time because it was build on the foundations of zero dawn (Decima Engine, Assets, parts of the map, some models and so on)
Microsoft Started acquiring studios in 2018, aside from IPs that were already in development like Redfall and Starfield, it will take some time until we see Microsoft with the same release rate as sony.
@Sebatrox Zorro and Lego brawls are both on xbox
@Sebatrox Doesn't change the fact that both are bad games on both consoles
