Update: Xbox has now officially crowned High On Life as the biggest Game Pass launch of 2022!
Original story: Well, it's fair to say High on Life has been a huge success. The wacky shooter launched on
Xbox Game Pass earlier in December
, and at first glance, it appears to have already established its place as the biggest Xbox exclusive of 2022.
The game is dominating the Xbox charts right now, sitting atop the "most popular" list for Xbox Game Pass titles, while it's also one of the "Top Paid" games in various regions, even despite being included with Game Pass.
Meanwhile, over on Steam, the game is sitting third in the list of Global Top Sellers at the time of writing.
As you can imagine, Microsoft seems very pleased with the success of the game, with Xbox exec Aaron Greenberg offering his congratulations to the team at Squanch Games yesterday (also retweeted by Xbox boss Phil Spencer):
Unfortunately we don't have details about physical sales for High on Life... because there isn't actually a physical version right now! We'd be surprised if a boxed release wasn't considered for the future though.
All in all, then, High on Life has been a great way to close out an otherwise fairly quiet 2022 for Xbox (Activision Blizzard drama aside), probably resulting in quite a few new Xbox console sales this Christmas!

Mixed reviews. Anyone played?
Finished it yesterday. Enjoyed it! Enjoyed the humour. It’s quite repetitive but the beginning and end are strong in my opinion. It’s just something different thats worth a look.
Clocked 9h 32m with 28/32 achievements.
I'm about an hour and a half in so far. I find it very funny and it's pretty refreshing playing something a bit more unique. We need more originality in the industry, so congratulations to them.
I play High on life everyday since last Friday. Awesome game
@K1LLEGAL What about bugs and performance? Is it better now?
@Dezzy70 It's pretty good but I'm finding it a little repetitive it's funny if you like stupid humour but it won't be for everyone I'd say defo worth giving it a try if you have gamepass. It does have some performance issues at least on series s sound has been cutting out randomly and some achievements seem bugged.
@Raftos there have been 2 major patches since launch, and it is smooth sailing since then on series X , great game imho
@Dezzy70 it’s a weird one. The gunplay is weak and the graphics remind me of gaming on the Switch. It’s funny though, I like the humour, put a couple hours in I don’t know if I’ll go back to it.
@raftos I played it on Series X and the only bugs I had were:
Performance was fine for me really.
One thing to note for those playing for the first time is the game autosaves and you can’t save and reload whenever you like so theres a few missable achievements along the way.
Thanks all for your comments.
Sounds similar to the reviews that you can trust
and like you guys on here.
@Dezzy70 Played for about an hour. Combat was lacking, style of humour not really my thing anymore, though a few jokes hit.
Didn't love it, didn't hate it, but did put it down for now. Will come back in Jan... probably
@TheSilverFalcon @K1LLEGAL Thank mates, gonna download it today. Series X for me too!
I don't get some of the critical review of this game, particularly Eurogamer who gave it an 'Avoid'. I'm about 80% through the game and the game is quite fun. And I just mean the gameplay side...it feels like a mix of BioShock infinite and something like Outer Worlds with the Sci-fi parts.
Sure the humour is one of those where you either love it or hate it, but still I think the gameplay aspect is good fun
@Dezzy70 it's honestly really great fun. I'm near the end now. Had a really good time.
@Dezzy70 It’s not going to blow your mind but it’s been pretty good fun. The boss battles have been quite good and the different traversal mechanics have been nice to add along the way. My biggest complaint is that it takes “bullets” a long time to get to target so hitting a moving target is near impossible.
@BRT15 I think they did a great job giving each gun a personality, and I don't mean their voiced character. They all have some different utility in basic combat, they have mods that change them pretty dramatically in some cases, and they have the trick hole that is not only used in combat but also in traversal. I think from a gameplay standpoint, that system deserves credit.
Gus and Creature are just fun to use too. Rage 2 shotgun is king, that gun just felt so perfect, but after using Gus I want all my shotguns to have a vacuum now lol
Great game, one of my favourites of the year 👍
I loved it ...just pity they haven't fixed the last achievement I need for the full 1000,but saying that they have been pretty quick on fixes for the game so hopefully soon
@FraserG
Curious why this is dimmed "unfortunate"? Physical sales would be a wildly incomplete number. I think we all know XBox users disproportionately buy digital, on PC there is rarely an option for physical, and then there is it being game pass. Even if we had physical sales figures, they would not reflect much given all these factors.
That aside, I got to say I am baffled by the game being 5th best selling XBox game right now (as of this post) despite being on Game Pass.
@Tharsman It's unfortunate there isn't a physical option! But understandable because of the reasons you stated. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets a physical version when it arrives on PlayStation and/or Switch.
@FraserG Ah ok I do understand being disappointed about no physical version (although I'm in the pure digital on XBox camp.) If it comes to Switch with a physical cart, I'll be very likely to buy it, although think so far their games have only gotten physical copies in the US via Limited Run (might be wrong.)
I was just thrown off about what I thought was the desire for sales figures of physical copies.
the humour is what makes this game if you dont like that humour its not for you.
I cant for the life of me understand how eurogamer gave this an Avoid rating that frankly is ridiculous
@Fenbops I'd say the graphics reminds me of playing on the Switch, IF the Switch had modern console power.
That is to say, the world is bright ang poppy. Instead of brown a gray. Like how Immortals makes me think of a Switch game.
Can't tell you how many times I've caught myself wishing I was playing Scarlet through a PC emulator instead of my Switch because of how bad it looks.
@trev666 Yea. Like Stick of Truth and Fracture Butt Hole. They reviewed great despite having polarizing humor. Weird to see how divisive this game has been.
Looks like a fun game, will try it out over the Christmas break.
@InterceptorAlpha it’s colourful but its so blurry, that’s what I meant 😜 it’s like playing 90% of Switch games docked.
Of course it's dominating charts. It's an interesting premise and love it or hate it everybody ends up trying it. The question is how many people play as far as the first boss, and how many put it down before then?
And remember, this is the platform where Pressure Washer Simulator was #1 for like 2 months........ Game Pass is the video game equivalent of Tumblr. Then again, that was Square-Enix published......
@Tharsman "That aside, I got to say I am baffled by the game being 5th best selling XBox game right now (as of this post) despite being on Game Pass."
Maybe people missed the memo that it's not a Stadia exclusive anymore....
@BRT15 Wasn't Bioshock Infinite panned for poor gameplay compared to it's predecessors?
@themightyant "Didn't love it, didn't hate it, but did put it down for now. Will come back in Jan... probably"
Nuh-uh, buster, you have some Tales games to play....
@Dezzy70 You've already seen my views but the summary: The gameplay seems really bland, dated, and clunky. If the humor (frat humor, stoner humor, toilet humor?) works for you, you can probably overlook the rough gameplay to enjoy the world. If the humor doesn't work for you, you're just going to get a grating attempt at comedy and some dated, rough gameplay in a pretty world. Unless you're one of the people that thinks the gameplay is great, which I just.....don't....get... It's just not. The world is nice, the mechanics are rudimentary. The humor is......subjective between hilarious or offensive or in my case just "irritating and not actually funny" but there's jokes that do still land for me.
I'd say you're not American enough for the humor to land, but, then, neither am I, and even Monty Python made Meaning of Life so............YMMV?
(Also, PJ was slightly unfair in the review calling out the drugs in the beginning...I mean yeah, starting a game and having it offer you coke lines in the first 10 minutes isn't a great thing, but it thematically connected to the titular theme (HIGH on life) as the aliens are liquidating entire planets to turn them into drugs, so the drug theme runs from the title through the whole plotline........for better or worse.... )
@InterceptorAlpha I think the issue with the humor is it's sooooooo base. Like way beyond the sharp witted South Park which goes base in clever ways....this humor, the base-ness is the joke. Like in Craig's video review the clip highlighting the character that wets himself. That's it, that's the whole funny gag of the character, that he wets himself. Someone somewhere thinks that's hilarious. Someone over the age of 7 might even think it's hilarious. For everyone else....what about that is supposed to make you laugh? It's just gross. There's a particular customer for this kind of humor, and it's definitely not what most people would consider funny.
But the complicated part is it does mix in some funny things and some nerd/gamer-insider-humor that DOES land....but then you have to endure "so the guy wets himself...I'm supposed to laugh, ha. ha. ok can I please do something fun now?" constantly.
I know I’m in the minority but I found it terrible. Performance has improved following the patches (it was abysmal before them) but try as I might I just can’t get any enjoyment from this game.
I wanted to like it, so much so that I installed, uninstalled and then reinstalled to give it another go - but to me the gameplay is just bland. Needless to say it’s been uninstalled again. No harm in trying on Gamepass though, and clearly there are plenty of people who do like it.
Didnt like this much on release and felt the gunplay was severely lacking.
However, since its been patched and series X performance no longer stutters badly, I've been able to play it more and it feels better - its never gonna beat Halo for gunplay feel;, but its serviceable now even if its missing impact.
The humour will be hit and miss. I watch Rick and Morty, so I occasionally smile and I'm not offended by the humour.
Since writting it off on release, I've gone back to it and I've taken 3 bosses down.
Its a nice looking world, although it doesn't feel like any of the characters are doing much except waiting to interact with you. Exploration can feel ok with the various traversal mechanisms once you have them.
I had thought it deserved the 4/10 it got here, but I have to say, since the patches and now I've experienced more its a 6/10 game from me. Not sure why people are buying it, but anyone on GP should give it a whirl - unless you hate this type of humour, as the whole game delivers this without end.
There is a target audience for this game and they seem to have found the the formula needed to be successful with it. This was never going to be an Elden Ring generational game. It will have a cult like following due to the content that will be a hit at home parties where people are already up to some foolery. You could really tell from the reviews was that the ones that gave it a bad review just couldn't get past what makes the game popular. It just wasn't for them. I tried it and it while it I don't find it amazing, the humor hasn't ruined it for me yet and I will keep plugging away at it, it's nice to hear that the story is good near the end. I really like how the game starts.
Xbox needs to seriously get better on launch day physical games. I'd buy more.
Was excited to let my 8 year old twin boys av a go until i played an saw the bit at the start where ya sis does a line er coke on her makeup mirror then offers ya one!! Errr, might be a bit much to explain that to em!! 🤦♂️🤦♂️
@Dezzy70 iI've completed but only because I review ***** for a site. I like Rick and Morty. I like Solar Opposites but this game is so irritating. It's like the cast of rejected jokes from those shows have found a home here. The gameplay is solid that is for sure if you've played Borderlands you know what this is...tedious. Nothing original, nothing special. If this wasnt on Games Pass or no one knew who Justin Roiland was, no one would care, it wouldnt be mentioned anywhere. The gaming equivalent of meh. Its not terrible at all but we have enough in our Games Pass backlog to play to even nconsider this tedium.
@jordan1992 You sound like the kind of parent who would let their child watch Beavis and Butthead or South Park only to complain about how it's inappropriate for kids. I mean this game is rated M for mature, just because it has cartoony graphics doesn't mean it will be appropriate for children.
I've really been enjoying it. If the gun chatter gets annoying you can lower the amount in the settings. Some of the mechanics can be confusing to master on the boss fights but overall, it's fun. This isn't a game you'll play over and over but it's definitely worth playing thru once.
Can’t wait to give this a go, visually it’s refreshingly different, also I love the silly humour. I get it’s not for everyone, but I think the pissing pants jokes and skits like the Mac n Cheese construction bros are hilarious. Can’t help but laugh at it as it’s so ridiculous. Result it’s on game pass. There needs to be unique games like this coming out more often
@Fenbops What are you playing on? I'm on a Series X and is it pretty crispy.
Humor is hit or miss, but even if you're down with it the best I can say is that it's a good Game Pass game. Which... isn't really a compliment, that's basically the equivalent of saying it made for a good rental back when that was a thing - you play through it once, maybe twice to mop up any missing Achievements, and never look back.
Been watching my son play this the past few days and I will say it is a well made game.
Games like this is why I love Gamepass. I can honestly I would never bought this game before playing it but now that I have seen my son play it I am considering picking it up.
@shoeses I mean thats literally most games for me these days. There is so much content coming out, do most people really have time to keep replaying games? Do people even want to? Even when I did have more time for gaming I usually just moved on once a game was complete.
@K1LLEGAL I can get that, there's a lot of factors from person to person on if they do or don't wanna replay anything. But when I say it for High on Life I mean there's no reason to replay it from a gameplay perspective - nothing different on a repeat playthrough & the gameplay's not fun enough to warrant another playthrough on itself.
@JayJ my kids play God of War, Grand Theft 5, Cod!! They’re twin boys, their names are Ronnie an Reggie Bray!!! They’re the Bray twins!!! Hard as nails!!! 💪 💪 😂😂😂
Just started playing tonight, love it! Love the humour, had me in stitches at some points so far 😂🤣😂 The beginning is utter brilliance, hey it’s more your divorce lawyer 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
@BRT15 Eurogamer is infamous for their ridiculous reviews. I was an avid reader but nowadays look elsewhere for my gaming news. If high on life was made by Nintendo without the jokes it would be recommended by that shower.
@trev666 completely agree. The game is great. Refreshing with the right amount of progression (other than the intro) and content. I quite like the humour too, it's juvenile but in a world full of ultra-seriousness I'm happy to go along with it. I don't think the introduction helps the game though. Getting offered lines by your sister in a middle class household is kind of taboo - it doesn't help the game either and just adds a negative, the initial fights using Kenny alone quickly get boring (just imagine halo with just the pistol for a couple of levels). But otherwise it's sound. Ive Had a couple of bugs like being stuck in scenery from exploring, I just restart from the generous save points.
@hadrian nothing original? These insane takes for a decent game. I'm gathering you played on story difficulty as there's nothing tedious about the guns and abilities on normal. Also the additional traversal abilities are class, It's fun and occasionally challenging. Hooking onto a high wire, quickly shooting a gloop shot to take down the barrier, boosting up with your jet pack, landing on a sawblade you had to shoot prior to setting off before slowing time to enter a gigantic fan which is at the end of a gravity defying magboot walk. What about that is meh?
@Fenbops the gunplay gets better as you progress. Once you get creature and gus, combined with the jetpack and mag boots, it's on another level compared to Kenny and Sweezy (never use Sweezy as it's pretty weak and the time dilation seems pointless, maybe on hard that could be useful but on normal so far it's unnecessary).
The levels open up.
