Yep, it's one of these stories again! Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has pushed out its latest update today (1.08), and Xbox fans are finding that it's in the region of 40-50GB, whereas it's less than 1GB on PlayStation and PC.
Although full patch notes haven't been provided yet at the time of writing, it seems this update is purely focused on fixing bugs, exploits and a specific issue related to Profile Showcases, with no major new features added to the game.
(Update: The full patch notes are now live!)
"We've recently released an update that fixed an issue that prevented players from editing their Profile Showcase, additionally we've also fixed various map exploits and bugs across the game."
So, what's going on with the ridiculously large update size on Xbox?! Well, we've seen instances of this in the past where Xbox suffered a much bigger download then PlayStation, with 2019's Modern Warfare issuing an update that was 65GB bigger than PlayStation back in 2020 - although interestingly, that later turned out to be an "unforseen bug".
Watch Dogs: Legion was another game that fell prey to this a couple of times, with the Xbox versions seemingly being required to re-download parts of the game all over again, even when just a few fixes had been applied in the patch.
We'll let you know if we hear anything more specific on this, but at least for the time being, we're unfortunately stuck with a pretty major download size for this latest Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 update.
What download size are you seeing for the update? Let us know in the comments below.

Probably just another Sony paid for feature.

I have always put the series x on features above the PS5 but this is one area in some games the memory storage falls behind Xbox wise.
@jordan1992 I'm not.
Can’t wait to stream COD on Game Pass, and not have to worry about install sizes
Had this game for about 24 hours and between everything trying to download and updates between this and the Xbox one it's safe to say I don't miss gaming as much as I thought I did. Been playing on the ps2 for a bit now because these updates are ridiculous
Back in 2018 i bought Black Ops 4. Back then I would game on weekends, every weekend like Friday evening or Saturday morning, when I'd turn the PS4 on, there would be an update, those updates were usually huge too and would take forever to download. It was that game that basically made me quit online gaming. It was absolutely ridiculous, constantly updating. In the end I spent more time updating then actually playing the game
Any idea if the patch is live in uk?
I'd advise people to play something worthwhile instead. Like Tianding, for instance. 👌🏼
Ps probably just optimizes and compresses much better
MW2 is a great game. A little disappointed that when I first downloaded it - was around 45gig. Now two weeks later it sits and is taking up 116gig of my precious Internal space. I thought they said they were going to be mindful of peoples hard drive space this time around. That didn't last long.
More than likely better optimization. We know the PS5 does it better in general, not sure about the case for the PS4 though.
@gingataisen Tianding is great, but I also think this game is just as good. It has one of the better campaigns in a FPS in a very long time - in fact, I think it’s up there with Titanfall 2 and DOOM 2016.
@BlackMayge That's high praise indeed, I think Titanfall 2 and the Doom games have set the recent bar for FPS campaigns. Modem Warfare 2019 was decent but COD always feels heavily scripted and linear in my opinion.
I'm not sure what's up with Xbox compression tech but I deleted the offline version of flight sim and it still takes up 130 GB!
Turned on the Xbox to play some MW2 today and seen this ridiculous update for a game that was only released last Friday. Knew this was going to be the case as it was the same for Modern Warfare 2019 also.
PS5 bespoke decompression hardware doesn’t explain the difference else PC would be affected too, but it isn’t.
@Dezzy70 Sony has better compression tech than Xbox. Most of their games come in a decent size under the Xbox counterpart. But i never seen it be this big of a difference for an update. Seems like a area Xbox might want to take a look into. Compression could only benefit file sizes and it would seem like they would have to do that for Cloud gaming anyways.
Absolutely crazy , just when I was finished downloading the game and MP update and was getting ready to launch the game , I got this 50Gb update. So … tonight is not going to be the night that I play this game. Unfortunately I have no access to high speed internet because of localization but I’ll manage , except the COD games. They probably demotivate people with weaker internet to buy this game by pushing out these HUGE updates every week. I understand a patch , but you just cannot accept those complete game installs every couple of weeks or if you are unlucky , every week.

@Kaloudz The issue is not only time, but bandwidth restrictions. Downloading this massive game on top of an update like this accounts for well over 10% of my monthly allowance, and it's only the 4th! So the fact they are this big is a concern, especially for those that work from home or face fees for overages.
Yet another reason I am glad I am no longer buying into any new COD games.
The overall vitriol for PlayStation on this site means I genuinely can’t tell if people are sarcastically blaming Sony or really are that deluded
@GeeEssEff Both
File difference that large is not a compression issue. Honestly, I don't do conspiracies but considering this happened before I'm really curious about the root cause of the difference.
@Kaloudz well that's exactly the thing, with the way the game works you get these updates quite a lot. Factor in the amount of people that have ***** internet and the fact that you can't even play games whilst downloading because it'll throttle the speed causes some irritation.
People saying Sony has better compression tech than Xbox... Even if that was the case, their is zero chance it is over 50 times better than Xbox's compression. The Series X has more power and more software features. That is not the compression, but their is no excuses for a patch being 50gb vs less than 1gb. The devs really probably should not have even pushed the patch through until they optimized it properly for all platforms.
If it was the other way around and PS had a 50gb update I would feel the same way.
These next gen consoles have proper SSD hard drives, but both PS n Xbox don't come with enough storage to be having games that start at 100gb then put out patches that are 50gb, that's messed up
@Kaloudz no idea, not played Cold War and Vanguard.
I'm sure other games e.g AC Valhalla have had massive updates a lot of the time, like it re downloads the whole game.
lol at "compression".
Yeah just your classic 70 times better compression.
@Kaloudz That's if you have good internet. If you are stuck with DSL, that will take almost a full day to download. That's not the only problem though. This happens at least once a CoD game now for Xbox players, and there's no excuse why CoD games are so big to begin with.
@MagicCat True, that did happen once for Valhalla, but that was also to basically redo the game code or whatever to make the game smaller and run better. This is not that kind of an update, so there's no excuse for it, especially when it happens with almost every CoD game at least once on Xbox nowadays.
It's cuz xbox is more better, don'tcha know?
New Xbox commercial:
XBOX!!!.... MORE!!! BETTER!!!
GET'R DONE!!!
Then the Xbox sound and logo play.
weird one.
I bought MW1 and paid £70 back in the day.
Then warzone got added.
Now i doesnt show i own MW1 digitally anymore.
But if i download warzone, it lets me download MW1.
The issue is, i dont want 150gb of Cod just to play MW1
trying to stop myself from saying Activision moment
It's 84gb for me on xbox one and for whatever reason the download speed is slowed down i usually get 200mbps its hanging around 60mbps
I finished downloading Warzone 2.0 last night after leaving my Xbox on for 3 days straight, and now it's telling me I have an update that's almost the size of the entire game (44GB update for a 54GB package), insanity
