Update: EA has now revealed Need For Speed: Unbound with a release date of December 2nd, 2022!
Original story: Just about a week ago we heard reports that the reveal of Need for Speed 2022 was right around the corner, and that it'd be titled 'Unbound'. Well, a new listing via Japanese site Neowing confirms the game's name, along with a unique new art direction for the series.
'Need for Speed Unbound' looks like it's aiming for a comic book-style aesthetic going off the images spotted so far, especially when you take both the in-game visuals and the UI into account. Here, take a look at what's cropped up so far:
As the tweet says, the Japanese listing also mentions just the PS5 version console wise, so this is looking like a current-gen-only release at present. Need for Speed Unbound will mark developer Criterion's first proper NFS title since 2012's Most Wanted reboot, with the British team working on Unbound since Need for Speed Heat launched in 2019.
The listing pens the game's release date as December 2nd 2022, which also falls in line with last week's report. We won't have to wait too much longer for proper gameplay anyway, as EA is all set to reveal the next Need for Speed tomorrow, October 6, at 8am PT / 11am ET / 4pm BST.
What do you make of these new Need for Speed details? Excited to see a new direction for the series? Let us know down below!

Looks fresh, that much can be said. Can anyone recommend any Need for Speed games on Game Pass or in general? I stopped playing this series once it got all Fast and Furious. I like simcade stuff like Forza Motorsport but Horizon and Grid are also some of my favourites.
@gollumb82 I know a lot of peope didn't like it; but NFS Payback isn't bad at all. NFS Hot Pursuit remake is an absolute monster too.
As long as they do not go the Saints Row character design its hopeful.
@TheGrimOne
Thanks mate! I actually have very fond memories of playing the original Hot Pursuit (1999 if I remember correctly, Jesus I'm old). I'll give them a whirl 🙂
Looks like the same crap they've been doing forever, except now they're trying to add some cellshade/comic flair to it. If anything they're trying to copy some indie games like Inertial Drift.
This ACTUALLY may be a breath of fresh air for the series. If I can get some hints of underground in here or most wanted i'm all in.
Ooooh this is different. And developed by Criterion too.
Interested...
Problem is though, as with any EA game I'll wait for it to come to EA play. I love Hot Pursuit 2010, but I still waited for the remaster to come to game pass rather than run out and buy it.
Looks really cool, but I haven't liked anything from Criterion, so I don't know. This series for me died with the PS2 to be honest. I REALLY want to get back into it, but it has lost its charm, at least for me.
Heat was pretty good at least. I didn't like the voiced protagonist or the music too much but it was enjoyable enough to finish it once.
Damn hope it's true, those pictures are hard
Looks cool, Just wish this was going to be on Xbox One.
Looking fabulous!
I'm caustiously optimistic this NFS will be good because of criterion developing
