Rare has confirmed today that if you already own a digital version of the Rare Replay collection for Xbox One, you'll be given access to GoldenEye 007 at no extra cost when it arrives in the near future - no catches!
This was mentioned earlier today by Studio Head Craig Duncan on the Xbox website:
"Additionally, players who own a digital copy of Rare Replay, the 30-game compilation of classics from the award-winning studio behind GoldenEye 007’s original release, will be able to download and enjoy the game free of charge."
There's no word on whether a workaround will be provided for physical owners of Rare Replay as of yet.
It should be noted that Rare Replay is currently on sale on the Xbox Store for just £4.99 / $7.49, so if you're interested in getting access to GoldenEye 007 outside of Game Pass, it might be worth buying it right now! We're assuming the game will be available as a standalone purchase when it arrives too, but there's no word on pricing just yet.

@Dr_Luigi The article states that this is only for those that own the game digitally. There's no word as of yet whether those who own it physically will be able to claim.
Why DIGITAL only? I have the disc version.
Very nice! I hope they give this out to those who have the physical copy as well.
@Dr_Luigi You can grab it digitally from the store for £5, possibly less if you 'go to Argentina'.
I will say that there should be some way of getting it for free, even if you only have the physical version
@Dr_Luigi the article also says that it's available on the Xbox store for less than a fiver too.
Also worth remembering that Rare Replay was actually given away a few years ago to people watching the E3 conference.
So it's looking like no online PvP for Xbox??? Just on switch? That's a shame. One n done now for me. Was looking forward to playing with my buddies online.
The gift that keeps on giving. Thank you, Xbox!
If I own the physical copy of Rare Replay, is it a good idea to buy a digital copy for $7.50 to get Goldeneye for free?
@themightyant probably so people wouldnt pass around a physical copy to the. Redeem the game
Ummmm I have the physical version. Seriously MS you can do one here. Don Mattrick levels of anti physical here
Well that’s unfair if true. I own it physically
@Rmg0731 On most platforms you have to have the disc in the system if you want to play related digital purchases. Assumed this would be the same. That prevents passing the disc on.
@themightyant Totes justifies a $70 Rare Replay digital price tho, darned physical cheapskates....
@Don Does the ability to play the games without swapping disks sound appealing to you? Because that would be an added bonus. If you plan to play small multiplayer sprints in between other games, it might be worth the $7.50 just for that.
@NEStalgia Egon: Don’t cross the streams.
Peter: Why?
Egon: It would be bad.
Peter: I’m fuzzy on the whole good/bad thing. What do you mean 'bad'?
Egon: Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.
Raymond: Total protonic reversal.
Peter: That’s bad. Okay. Alright, important safety tip, thanks Egon.
Nice and classy Rare!
@Tharsman
My main concern is whether getting it for free from owning digital Rare Replay is simply access that can be taken away at anytime vs a purchase that can be played on the console forever. If there is such difference I prefer to pay for the game.
Oh, nice. Getting it for sure!
@Don Understand the fear, but doubt it. I think they are treating it as a "sale", but we will know better when it goes online. If we have to click a button to get it for free, then it's certainly just a purchase, and they wont ever take purchases away.
I'm sure that's not comforting enough to figure if it's worth buying now. At the end of the day, though, $7.50 isn't that big of a gamble.
I would imagine if they ever head to a licensing limit where they need to unlist, they would let us know so we can buy them, just as they have done with Forza removals.
"There's no word on whether a workaround will be provided for physical owners of Rare Replay as of yet."
It might be available as digital DLC for the physical version of Rare Replay.
"We're assuming the game will be available as a standalone purchase when it arrives too, but there's no word on pricing just yet."
It's true that many games included in Rare Replay are available separately without the Rare Replay banner, so that's a possibility.
There might be three ways to play it, as part of Rare Replay, as a separate purchase like the Xbox 360 games and as a Game Pass title. However, it might be easier to make the game available as free DLC for Rare Replay, so even people with the physical version would be able to play it with the disc inserted, but that would rule out a separate purchase, I think.
@Don If it's free DLC for Rare Replay, then you'd always have it if you have Rare Replay, it wouldn't be a rent. I think it's worth getting the digital version of Rare Replay on sale right now, anyway. 31 games included and no disc required.
@Banjo-
Awesome, I will download the digital copy then. $7.50 is a great price for Goldeneye remaster free download plus a backup copy of Rare Replay.
@Don Yep, I would do the same if I didn't have physical and digital copies already. The Xbox 360 games included in Rare Replay are separate downloads as well and they are for you to keep if you have Rare Replay, so Goldeneye 007 is the same thing.
Hopefully it'll be included for physical copy owners as well (like myself). MS has usually been pretty good about this kind of stuff with including DLC for some of the OG Xbox games in the emulated versions and whatnot.
@Dr_Luigi digital edition like it says in the article ?
Wonder if part of the deal to release it is that it can't be sold individually
Seems like it is only being advertised as being available on Gamepass, Rare Replay & the Switch Online Service - all of which mean that it is not sold separately ie it is part of an online service or added free to an existing compilation
@Dr_Luigi
I believe it is only for the digital copies mate...
As both Nintendo owns Publishing Rights and Rare/MS owned the Assets and Game design, they had to negotiate a Solution. Obviously Nintendo don't want to let MS Publish Goldeneye and MS won't let them use Rare's work for nothing either so they came to a mutual solution.
It seems that MS can include it as part of the Digital Rare Replay (makes sense - they are not 'publishing' it separately) and can offer it 'free to play' via Game Pass (so not 'selling' Goldeneye) in return Nintendo can put the N64 version, even add online MP, in their online service (so not selling Rare's work) so neither are 'selling' the game but gamers can get to play a game that no-one expected to return due to rights issues...
They never advertised the disc version to have Goldeneye and could even market it as a 'bonus' for buying it digitally - like you get Steelbooks or concept art books for buying some special editions of Physical games. Maybe this was part of the condition - then they are never selling the game Physically either as a standalone or part of a package??
@jkald Could it be that they said digital because the disc doesn't include Goldeneye 007? However, the disc doesn't include the Xbox 360 games either but triggers a multiple download. It makes sense to think that the physical edition will trigger the free download of Goldeneye 007 but, to be sure, the digital edition of Rare Replay is on sale right now.
Owe all 360 Rare games separately & even though I want to play the remaster, I’m not going to invest more money. It’s not a lot but I have a back catalogue to take care of. We need days with 48 hours 😛
This is really cool of them.
@themightyant probably because most people with the disc bought but for GoldenEye for next to nothing.
Not saying you did and it does suck but I get why they are doing it that way... But it's Microsoft they usually figure out a fair upgrade path.
I mean the first post is about the guy getting the game used for "next to nothing" and if everyone did that... We would never see anything like this again.
I have a feeling. This feeling tells me 2 things.. first it tells me RDNA3 is going to smack nVidia around a bit but that's not related. So the 2nd thing it's telling me is they are going to use sales and engagement with this game (achievements, hours played, modes played etc) and use it to Guage whether or not it's fiancially viable to give this the Halo Anniversary edition style make over like they had started for the 360 but couldn't finish
@d0x3601 As an ancient gamer I bought Rare Replay Day 1 for full price. It was and remains an absolute bargain filled with memories.
I get Goldeneye through Game pass regardless, just a bit annoying that we physical owners are treated differently and don't get a copy to keep like any who bought the digital version.
It's certainly not the end of the world just a point of principle.
I hear yah. I'm also ancient but I adopted digital everything basically ASAP. The way I see it, if a game I really like isn't going to be playable digitally for some reason then I'll find it cheap on disc or at least reasonably priced. Of course if there is a PC version and for some odd reason that stays up then I'd just play that until I could use emulation. The one good thing about the Xbox and it's literal PC hardware is that it also runs dx12u. Yeah devs can get down deeper than that but 3rd parties won't and most games probably won't require it... But basically I'll find a way to play it even if I have to pay more.
I know that's basically incentive for them to do stupid **** with digital games but I don't think they would unless legally forced.
Plus I have gamepass paid up through the end of 2025 thanks to rewards. I haven't paid for an online service on Xbox in 13 years this year and I hope to continue not paying lol.
That sucks as I bought RR physical.
