Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt RED has just revealed that its open world cyberpunk RPG has now surpassed 20 million copies sold worldwide, since its initial launch in December 2020. Sales will no-doubt have been boosted by this year's next-gen port, which massively improved on the game's last-gen console release.
When you consider that Cyberpunk 2077 was actually removed from sale on certain digital storefronts, this is quite the feat. Of course, the game had a huge marketing push at launch, on the back of years and years of fan hype.
Not too long ago, the team also revealed its future plans for the title. Last-gen consoles are being completely dropped in future, while a new Cyberpunk 2077 expansion is in the works for Xbox Series X and S. The new Netflix anime has also reportedly boosted the popularity of the game:
Are you one of the 20 million players to have cruised around Night City? Do let us know!

Great to hear. I sincerely hope they'll keep their promise to not abandon this universe and a Cyberpunk 2078 will come out one day. Think I'll play it again somewhere around Christmas in preparation for Phantom Liberty DLC.
I’m off work this week and thought I’d dive back into Night City. Mostly been doing free roam stuff like gigs, whilst I re-familiarise myself with all the game’s (many) mechanics. Having a blast, and looks great on Series X (playing in performance mode). Still quite rusty on all the hacking stuff but I’ll get there!
I almost gave up on the game a couple of times near the start just because of how bewildering all the systems and objectives were, but I'm glad I persevered as I'm loving it now. I do think it does a bad job of easing players in and explaining the various mechanics though. I only really found out how to enjoy playing it after reading several 'getting started' and 'things to know' type guides online. I shouldn't have to do that...
I wonder how much the netflix anime, cyberpunk edgerunners helped sales. Because that's a great series and I've never even played cyberpunk. I intend to buy it soon though. The anime I'd say is what reignited interest for me. That and the knowledge it's been patched a load and the series X version being available now too (well has for a while now) is motivating me. But predominantly the anime.
I really enjoyed my time in the game I thought iot was good from the start I have only ever played on the series x so I think that helped a ton.
@gollumb82
Finally did it and got me LG C2 65”
Working and looks great all round and with me series x.
It’s one hell of a TV overall.
@Dezzy70
Congtats mate 🙂 I'm rocking a Samsung Qled 55" but it gets the job done. I'll probably buy an OLED next in a couple of years.
This game will definitely keep selling well throughout this generation. It'll probably sell around 40 million when it's all said and done..
Yet it's nowhere near completed nor will it ever be. Still can't believe that this garbage received 10s and 9s in it's launch state. Sure, it's much more stable now BUT one expansion won't magically erase all the lies CDPR spewed over the years.
I might get this game soon for my series s as I've found it cheap on cd keys, but how long does the game take to finish?
I really wanted to like this game and the game might be really good. But the rigid camera and rigid controls leaves the game basically unplayable for me.
It is typical CD Projekt Red so honestly knew what s getting into. Just hoped for better.
@gollumb82
Just downloading cyberpunk, thought I would give it ago as I have it anyway, when I got the special edition cyberpunk Xbox one.
@Dezzy70
You are in for a treat. Especially with your new tv and if you haven't played the game since the next gen patch arrived. It's actually one of the best games I've played. Just don't listen to the naysayers and make up your own mind.
@gollumb82
Not played really at all since back in the day for an hour, so should enjoy now, heard it’s loads better and shines on the series x.
What has me shocked... is that CyberPunk is available on PS+ right now... But not on XGP!
Hahaha PlayStation straigt up booted CyberPunk off their online store for half of a year.
Yet PS+ gets CyberPunk, but Xbox Game Pass doesnt? Very weird, I figure it would be Game Pass or niether, not PS+ first.
@Stoned_Patrol There's a 5hr trial version available on the highest plus tier. Not the full game.
@Stoned_Patrol Only a trial tho not the full game
@UndyingInsurgent95 Time to let go of the past.
@Tangerine There's quite a few reports that the anime series did have an influence on the current resurgence / interest in CP2077. I haven't seen the series myself, so I cannot comment on it. I'm 92hrs in and just progressed into Act 3. Loving the game and its good that its gaining popularity 2yrs after its dreadful launch. CDPR is commended on sticking to it, as the game world is too good to be squandered.
Waited until the next gen version was ready and honestly loved the world they built. Looking forward to having another reason to jump back in! Shame there will be only one but better than none
@SingleStooge I had heard from a friend it had boosted sales of the game. He didn't know by how much though. I look forward to finally buying and playing it. I was so hyped for years then red flags then I didn't buy it...seems it's time to finally visit night city
@Dezzy70
Indeed it is. To the point I regret that CDPR decided to let go of Red Engine in favour of Unreal Engine 5. I really love the aesthetic of this game and think it's really gorgeous now. Enjoy and do give me your impressions once you've played it for a bit 🙂
Played the game one year after launch when it got the current gen upgrade and loved it. What CDPR did prior to launch was ***** but it is a good reminder that people should never preorder games regardless of the publisher.
Played through it day 1 on ps4 pro. And also played it on ps5. Always enjoyed the game…adore the world setting. Definitely has its short comings (don’t be expecting police chases, any real depth in choices), but is a fun game - particularly if you focus more on the side quests than the main story.
The biggest shame about this game is that the very first proper mission of the sp campaign really is the best and most polished part of the entire game… it’s basically the e3 demo, and really leaves you with an idea of just how awesome this game could have been if the same level of care was present throughout
@Spaceman-Spiff I played the trial on Series X (on which performance is impressive) but I die at an early shooting section through a building which is unusual.
@gollumb82 The LG OLED TVs are perfect for gaming since the C9 (2019) but this year, in 55" and bigger models, they started to include a more efficient panel, which in theory means longer lifespan and less burn-in risk. So, they just became better as future purchases.
@Darylb88 I'm not losing any sleep over Cyberpunk or CDPR, trust me lol. All I'm saying is, having a broken, unfinished product sell as many as 20 million units is MADNESS! Far more deserving games have sold way less, and we're talking about polished, complete products.
@UndyingInsurgent95
Only it's not a broken and unfinished product anymore. It's cool, though. You don't have to like it.
@Banjo-
That's why I've stayed away from OLED until now. A few of my friends have experienced burn-in in the early models and even the PS Vita that I own has burn-in as well. I hope in 2-3 years this issue will get completely resolved and then I'll buy one.
@gollumb82 Not broken, but definitely unfinished. Let's go back to their E3 demo, and let's hear their promises again. A deep RPG with branching paths and a lively open world that reacts to your decisions. Wall climbing (missing), hacking (missing), in game mods (missing), flying cars (missing) etc. I could go on and on but I think you get where I'm coming from. If you bought the game at launch and you're happy with it's current state, then I'm glad you got your money's worth. For XONE and PS4 players, yeah lol.
@UndyingInsurgent95
Fair enough. Some features never made it to the final version, but at least it's not a mess like MGS V where the entire final act is missing. And that game got 9s and 10s across the board...
@gollumb82 And I do recommend them to you when the time is right. I have two, the LG C9 (55") and the LG C1 (48"). The best thing for me is the image quality, nothing compares to this 👍.
@gollumb82 The ending of MGV is hilarious, the last missions are repeated in a harder way. I beat the game completely and the last part is a mess.
@Banjo-
The tv will have to wait. I usually change those after 5-7 years of use. I will eventually buy one of those and will be made by LG 🙂 As for MGS V, it was a huge letdown and I get why Kojima was so furious with Konami. The game was still very good, but the ending was rushed and incomplete. Not a big deal, though. I think MGS as a series has run its course and I'm glad it's over.
@gollumb82 Yes, I only got a second TV because it's for a different place. I enjoyed MGSV too, but it became a bit tiresome. I played The Twin Snakes on GameCube, that I liked quite much and 3 on 3DS. I have the HD Collection and Peace Walker waiting on Xbox. I think that you have played Cyberpunk several times, why do I get killed in the first shooting section (trial version)? LOL
@Banjo-
Haha. It takes some time to get used to the fact that CP2077 is an rpg. The first person perspective kind of makes you expect it to play like a regular shooter. As you'd expect,at the beginning you are a weakling with a peashooter of a gun so take cover and when shooting aim for the head. Also, try leaning from cover when shooting and not going in guns blazing😉
@gollumb82 Thanks, I'll give the trial another go!
