One of the things we love about Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer is that he's still very much a gamer like the rest of us, and can often be seen playing games on Xbox and PC. But how many hours does he actually play per-week?
Amazingly, Spencer revealed during this week's interview with Bloomberg that he's somehow fitting in around 15 hours of Xbox every seven days, even despite his busy job and home life. Here's the quote:
"I go to bed early, so I go to bed at 10pm... I probably play 15 hours a week?"
So how does he do it? Well, as mentioned later on in the interview, Spencer sticks to a regiment where he shuts off from work when he gets home as much as he can... and of course he's probably playing games for work a lot as well!
"My little 15-minute commute back and forth is my transition zone... I'm very regimented that way."
Interestingly, Spencer also mentioned that when the effects of the COVID pandemic meant that he had to work from home along with the rest of Microsoft's employees, the loss of that regiment affected him emotionally and in terms of his motivation, which he was "pretty transparent about" with the people around him.
Surprised that Spencer players 15 hours per-week? Give us your thoughts in the comments below.

an average of two hrs a day isn't unreasonable at all and can even count some 'hours' as part of his Job, trying 'new' games, providing feedback etc. I would also imagine that some weeks may allow more hours and others 'less'. Travelling around the world on planes to meet with Studios, attend events, staying in hotels etc also allows for some 'gaming' time too so can 'test' out Cloud (where applicable), take his Series S etc to play anywhere.
Its great that Phil makes time to play games as that helps keep the Passion for the industry, for the creativity and experiences they offer instead of getting 'bogged' down by all the hard work and issues that can plague a project....
I wish I could get 2 hours a day consistently. Damn kids and their activities...
Will be zero when God of war Ragnarok comes out
Well, only for a couple of weeks.
He plays more than I.
Pretty sad when a busy executive plays more video games then I do. I am lucky if I can get an hour in a week. I don't know how some people do it to be quite honest.
I play about that per week, and I have a busy job (not Phil Spencer busy, but way more than 40 hours per week) and a big family. The difference for me is that I trade game hours for sleep. 10pm is usually when I start gaming.
It isn’t healthy. I don’t recommend it. But it is the only way I can enjoy my favorite hobby.
My guess was gonna be 10.
At the moment I rarely get time, work and house move added to family commitments, pretty tough. Otherwise I'd say around 8-10 for me.
Depends on the week for me. Some weeks, zero. Other weeks, 60-80.
The bliss of being an adult with an income and no children. But as such I tend to have plenty of personal projects going that result in most weeks being zero gameplay.
@BartoxTharglod also true. 10-hour work days make things tricky to game because I have adult things to do. I'm lucky if I get 6 hrs a week to game.
I’m not surprised Phil doesn’t game for longer with him being a CEO at Microsoft, I bet it would be more if it weren’t for him being so busy with the responsibilities that goes with the job role.
When I’m in a daily routine with the kids at school, I’d say I game for about 48 hours a week. It’s more when they off on school holidays seeing as I don’t need to go to bed early but it all depends if we’re having days out, doing activities etc, then it’s less.
@Auglicious kids are the worst!!! Lol
But seriously i would play so much ***** if i was a kid with gamepass.
@Tasuki
An hour a week? An you are spending time on this site?
I would say I play about 10 hours a week.
Usually play my switch in bed an hour per night.
And the Xbox or PlayStation for about 3 hours at the weekend me and my son always have a co op game on the go so that’s usually what I play at the weekends when he’s at mine.
Waiting to move house and once I do I’m getting my own dedicated gaming area so hopefully can get a few more hours in during the week as I won’t be sharing the tv with my partner.
But if there’s game I really want to play I’ll usually focus entirely on that and stay up later during the week.
@Stoned_Patrol No. With a 40+ hour a week job and then family, it's hard to find time.
I myself play between 6-8 hours per day. have chosen not to work, so spend all my time on my interests.
Mans gotta work, I range from 10 to 40 lmao
@Tasuki You only play an hour a week?! That's.. really really really short and would take forever to finish one game I don't see how anyone can only do an hour a whole week
He isn't a true Xbox fan even though he is supposed to be. He is always promoting other consoles and devices, even the pc. It's why I don't care for him.
The higher up job a person has, the less work they do, the more free time they have as other people do his work. It's the way it is at every job. My last job we would find our boss asleep at his desk in his office many times.
@Tc93 Wait, so the head of Xbox can’t be a fan of PC even though it is an Xbox platform?
Not to mention the fact PC is also part of the company he works for.
Personally, I prefer my executives to be real fans of games. As a gamer myself, I own various platforms at all times and while I favour some I don’t discount the others. And as for Phil, he needs to know the competition. You can’t compete with a team/opponent/company you know nothing about. And some of the best rivalries are born out of appreciation/inspiration from close competitors.
@Stoned_Patrol @Bris it’s funny really because some weeks I spend more time on sites like this than I do gaming. For example, the time I spend waiting for my kids at school pick up or watching them at sports practice or waiting while they have piano practice and things is time I spend on my phone mainly browsing gaming news.
So as someone who works long hours (luckily from home) and has a family to spend time with, my gaming time varies wildly. It can be literally 1 hour in a Saturday and that’s it, or if I get lucky it could be a couple hours every night because everyone is asleep early. It varies based on life.
My average would be about 5-7 hours a week though.
I need to keep up with this guy.
I play 2 hours before work, I work from home, and 3 hours after work u til the Mrs gets home. Weekend all depend if we go out or not but at least 5 hours. I have already been through 2 controllers 😩
What platform is he playing on tho? Bet it ain't xbox haha.
I know he plays a lot with the community, would love to jump on a game with him sometimes. If we had a poll to see how much Jim Ryan plays I'd guess less then 1, my money is on 0.
I used to play about 2 hours a day, now I barely get 2 hours a week.
That’s more than me. Good on him.
@Microbius 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I guessed 20 hours a week. But 15 is a healthy amount of game time considering how busy Phil is. He probably plays more sometimes and less other times. Good to see he's a true gamer which makes him empathic with the community. Not sure Jim Ryan games much though as I think heard he's strictly a business man.
