Update: Following this report, Kotaku has weighed in with a report of its own, revealing that as per its sources, Rockstar has "shelved all remakes" following the poor performance of GTA Trilogy, and is focusing on GTA 6 instead.
Original story: We've heard rumblings recently of various remaster projects going on over at Rockstar Games. Aside from the now-released GTA Trilogy though, most of them have revolved around the Red Dead Redemption series. New reports bring GTA back into the fold, although sadly, this one may never see the light of day.
According to well-known Rockstar leaker Tez2, remasters of both GTA 4 and the original Red Dead Redemption were once in development in some capacity at Rockstar Games. However, Rockstar has reportedly cooled on the idea of either remaster.
Only in May of this year, rumours were circulating about a Red Dead collection for Xbox Series X|S, featuring next-gen ports of both Red Dead Redemption titles. This collection briefly appeared way back in 2020 as well, via an Amazon listing.
Tez2 speculates that the reception to the recent GTA Trilogy release could have put Rockstar off this particular pair of remasters, although that seems to be conjecture at the moment. For now, the two remasters appear to be in limbo.
Which of these would you prefer to see remastered, GTA 4 or RDR 1? Let us know in the comments!

Good, honestly we have enough Remasters. Focus on new games.
@Chaudy Agreed. Iād rather they have everyone working on GTA 6 and any other projects rather than yet more remasters.
They don't need remasters to begin with. FPS boost would be nice but they both still hold up very well and im sure Rockstar would only do more harm than good remastering them.
@Nightcrawler71 Rockstar North has over 600 people working there, and the remasters would very likely be done by another studio, like Grove Street Games.
I mean, you could get multiple studios involved and more than 600 people, but that's how Halo Infinite happened. More cooks will not make a better soup.
Remakes yes when the technology has far surpassed the original
Remasters no
I had both games collecting dust waiting for a remaster to come on Series X.... what a bummer :/
If they cooled on the idea as a result of the reception to the Definitive Edition, then that must mean Rockstar were planning to release equally half cooked, low budget, buggy pieces of crap for these two.
Good call to cancel, then.
That sucks, I was looking forward to the RDR 1 Remake..
They really donāt need them in my opinion. Especially if you have a Series X. Maybe from the Playstation side they could do with a remaster just for the sake of being able to access the games (without streaming).
Yeah if there was anything like the GTA remasters, good riddance.
If you're not going to bring the games up to modern standards, don't bother.
I was excited about San Andreas VR until I played the SA remaster, now I'm dreading it.
Thatās a shame, Iād of liked to of seen GTA IV remastered as it certainly could do with it. Donāt understand why they wouldnāt of went ahead and remastered both GTA IV and RDR as they would of sold extremely well given how popular they are.
Well that sucks. At least I can play the originals on my Series X. Can we get remakes of Bully and Manhunt 1 & 2 Rockstar? Please. The Warriors would be nice too...
Boo! GTA4 is pretty the definitive example of a game that could benefit from a remaster.
@Microbius supposedly the series x runs the xbox one x enhanced edition. So you get 4k, better textures, plus on series x better load times, smoother overall experience, etc.
@Mince The GTA trilogy was outsourced to Grove Street Games who only worked on mobile games before working on GTA trilogy but if it was done in-house by Rockstar themselves then I bet it would of been a much more quality product.
RDR already looked fantastic when it was enhanced for Xbox One X, itās just missing 60fps. No need for the game to be remastered when it comes to image quality.
GTA IV is another story though, it hasnāt aged well. The image looks blurry/murky, it certainly could do with looking a lot cleaner in 4K, as well as having it run in 60fps. Donāt know why it couldnāt of had the same treatment as RDR did when it was enhanced for Xbox One X.
All they really care about is GTA online at this point let's be honest
@Chaudy hopefully square enix will stop remastering / remaking final fantasy games then
@LX_FENIX not on Xbox because of the backwards compatibility but it would be good for people on PS4/ps5 & switch
@Richnj
RDR2 was developed by around 2000 people and that turned out great.
I am so sad that I missed out on another opportunity for Roman to annoy the **** out of me.
I'm ok.
@Would_you_kindly Don't forget about people on PC. As RDR was never released on PC originally.
@Floki yeah forgot that wasn't on pc that too
@Would_you_kindly I honestly forget all the time that the PS5 isn't backwards compatible past the PS4 (not counting ps plus) I've gotten too spoiled š
@LX_FENIX that's the main thing I prefer about the Xbox the backwards compatibility I get that the PS3 isn't easy to emulate but they still didn't make much of an effort for PS2 or ps1
GTA 4 wasn't really that fun. Also there is no way it would pass the woke test. Especially Lost and Damned. At least it's avaliable on pc.
@AstraeaV None of the GTA games would pass the "woke test" and yet they still remastered GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas and GTA 5. So at this point they might as well remaster GTA IV, especially as a lot of people can't get pass the last mission due to a bug.
@Acurisur Have you played GTA4? Lost and Dammed is especially bad. Then older GTA games are like cartoons similar to Itchy and Scratchy and get away with more. I personally don't care about the content but a lot of you will pretend to be offended by it. Not worth their effort at this time.
@AstraeaV I've played all of the GTA games. I originally played GTA IV on Xbox 360 and I'm now about halfway through a new playthrough on PC. Although my PC version is heavily modded so it looks infinitely better than the original version. About as close to a remaster as I can get for now.
