It'll probably come as no surprise to hear that Elden Ring is the highest-rated Xbox game on Metacritic for 2022 so far, but what about the second highest-rated game? No cheating, we want you to guess before you read on!
Spoilers ahead!!
The answer is the fantastic The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe, which boasts an incredible average rating of 93 on Metacritic (based on 7 reviews), placing it just behind Elden Ring which has an average of 96.
We're part of that rating, having given The Stanley Parable an "Excellent" 9/10 on Pure Xbox earlier this year:
- Review: The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe - The Perfect Expansion To An Endlessly Inventive Experience
And what about the rest? Here's the full top 10 Xbox games of 2022 so far according to Metacritic:
- Elden Ring (96)
- The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe (93)
- Cuphead in the Delicious Last Course (92)
- Rogue Legacy 2 (90)
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge (87)
- OlliOlli World (85)
- Forza Horizon 5: Hot Wheels (85)
- Citizen Sleeper (85)
- Destiny 2: The Witch Queen (85)
- Tunic (85)
A pretty interesting list, then, and it'll be even more interesting to see what it looks like towards the end of the year. Will anything be able to knock Elden Ring off the top spot? To be honest, we don't see it happening, but you never know...
Do you agree with Metacritic's top 10? Played The Stanley Parable on Xbox yet? Tell us in the comments.

Nothing is going to knock off Elden Ring. Not just on Xbox, but PS5 and Switch too.
Disappointed As Dusk Falls isn't in the top 10 for Xbox. Without a doubt the single best narrative focussed game that I've played, and I've played them all from Telltale to Dontnod and back.
Shredders Revenge is my GOTY right now. Not into souls games so Elden Ring wasnt for me, though I appreciate and respect its popularity and I assume it will she GOTY for most. But for me Shredders Revenge has been the most fun.
Glad Tunic made the top ten, but, hear me out here (puts on tinfoil hat) if this game would have been a Nintendo or even PlayStation timed/exclusive the Metacritic score would read 90+ almost guaranteed 😉.
Shredders Revenge I am guessing.
@pip_muzz in your opinion but I don't like souls games & so far this year my highlight has been horizon forbidden west & when gow Ragnarok comes out I'm confident that will be my goty it all comes down to personal preference
Currently playing through Elden Ring… destined to be my game of the year.
I always liked previous fromsoftware game, this one has so much more in common with Zelda breath of the wild though…that freedom, constant discovery, and not being restricted to a certain path. Really is something special.
TMNT was good mindless nostalgia
And Tunic I got into for a little while till it asked too much from me and my time.
@pip_muzz
Well maybe GOWR possibly the closet for 2022
And BOTW2 early 2023 Meta wise.
But that’s only maybe or a possible chance.
AI the somnium files Nirvana Initiative actually scored higher than some of the titles above (it's 86 on opencritic), most reviewer doesn't review the xbox one version
For me personally so far its down to three for game of the year, Elden Ring even though I didn't complete lol, Horizon Forbidden West and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 which so far is pretty damn good and the reviews are all high for it.
Of course Ragnarok, callisto and Hogwarts Legacy are all going to be nominated as well and hopefully all turn out to be amazing.
Going to be a close one this year.
@Kaloudz I didn’t know about the multiplayer system. Thanks man! I’ll keep it in mind if I see it on sale in the future.
Depends on how crazy people go over Persona 5 Royal on Xbox and Switch in regards to highest rated game of 2022. It hit 95 on PS4 with 71 media outlet reviews. it's likely to get less reviews overall for Switch and Xbox but I can see it getting to 97 once it's averaged out.
I don't think any game, not even GoW on PS5, can knock Elden Ring off that list in reality. It's so superb from so many different angles it's incredible. GoW will probably have a better story but tbh, if you invest the time into Elden Ring the world really does have a story that takes a lot of work but is so rewarding by the end of it.
I find it funny how people state that God of War Ragnarok is going to be a GOTY contender when the game isn't even out yet. People have definitely made their minds up already on that one.
We urgently need Elden Ring in the Game Pass library. There is no use of avoiding the obvious fact.
I dropped off Elden Ring. I don’t know, it’s obviously a great game but for me it’s not GOTY. Too little enemy variety, too many copy and paste dungeons and while the game is huge and I appreciate many gamers like that, i found it detrimental to the game. I can’t bring myself to finish it.
Off the top of my head I can’t think of anything that deserves GOTY, I’ve mainly been playing older smaller Indy titles for the most part.
Im not normally a souls like game player, but having made an effort to get into Elden Ring I absolutely see why this will win game of the year in most awards, and quite deservedly so in my opinion.
Most of these awards are voted by people in the buisness, and most of them see whats so extraordinary about elden ring even if its not their style of game. Its changed the narritive on how to succesfully deliver an open world experience, and as such, its an important title in gamings constant evolution.
Whilst im certain I will absolutely love and enjoy GOW later this year, I believe it will be just an amazing implementation of a game style Ive seen before. Ditto with HFW, absolutely loved that game, its incredible, but its not new to us, and I think this is why ultimately they will be beaten by ER.
Its all guess work though, anything could happen 😁
@pip_muzz how many people were saying starfield was a contender before any footage whatsoever had been shown lol
@Would_you_kindly an equal number of idiots, but all idiots nevertheless
That game rules
@pip_muzz I’m not sure it’s that people have made up their minds already more that they have faith in the Studio. With the exception on God of War Ascension every game Sony Santa Monica has released in the last 20 years has a Metacritic of 92-94. They rarely miss and have proven to be one of the most reliable studios in terms of quality.
Regardless I expect evolution of the last games ideas not revolution so it likely won’t hit the same heights... but who knows. I’m pretty sure it will be up there.
EDIT: Lastly while Elden Ring is a huge hit with critics and hardcore fans it's still a bit Marmite, plenty of people are put off by the difficulty and lack of direction (exactly the things many of us love about FromSoft games) but it likely won't clear up all the GOTY awards as it's an acquired taste.
For those wondering what the other titles just outside the Top 10 that scored 80+ are:
@pip_muzz
Although nothing may knock of Elden Ring, I feel MS has done a poor job of releasing new first party games this year so far and for the foreseeable rest of the year. I like what I see for next year, but MS has to improve its release consistency in avoiding drought years and avoiding droughts in certain months.
