We've got an update on this year's E3, and it appears the entire event has now been cancelled. Following on from the news that the showcase could still potentially go ahead earlier this month, IGN was able to confirm the annual event had been axed.
ESA also shared an official statement with IGN, revealing how the show would be back in 2023:
"We will devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer.
Whether enjoyed from the show floor or your favorite devices, the 2023 showcase will bring the community, media, and industry back together in an all-new format and interactive experience. We look forward to presenting E3 to fans around the world live from Los Angeles in 2023."
Geoff Keighley has also stepped in - announcing his Summer Game Fest will return this June. So there's at least that!

Microsoft just needs to do their own when the Activision deal goes through. Use the Blizcon expertise and make an Expo without paying for a middle man. I even bet publishers like EA would tag along.
With everything Xbox related that isn't Halo Infinite Season 2 seemingly delayed, I wonder if all attention this summer will be on that given E3's cancellation.
Covid is stupid. : (
E3 is dead it was dying before covid... covid just put it down for good me thinks.
E3 is now split between Gamescom Live, Thegameawards, and the big 3 showcases.
I think it's a trade off. You'll never see a showcase be as good since showcases are far in between, but we'll get more from time to time and not crammed into 2-3 days.
All these stories saying "E3 is cancelled" it was cancelled 3 years ago. When the last show (expo) was done, E3 was finished for good.
