It was just a few short days ago that we asked the simple question: is it time for another Xbox event soon? As it turns out, that may well be the case, at least according to XboxEra.
The site's co-founder, Shpeshal Nick, recently made an interesting comment on the XboxEra forums. Nick claims that two Xbox events are coming this year, one in May and one in September. Here's the full message:
The current plan from what I was told was a show for May and one for September.
Didn’t get any more detail than that.
Yes, before you ask, I also found it odd that they said May, when June is right there as the normal E3 spot.
If you then include an E3 show, that'll be a busy few months for all things Xbox. The team should have quite a bit to talk about though, with 2023 games in the pipeline, along with its currently announced 2022 lineup.
Of course, this isn't set in stone, so it's best to take the claim with a grain of salt. However, Xbox boss Phil Spencer is appearing on the site's podcast real soon, so there's a connection there. Maybe Phil could clear things up for us...
Is May too late for the next Xbox showcase? Let us know your thoughts on these timings below.

Is May too late for a showcase? Yesterday is too late for a showcase 🤣
All joking aside I'm really rather excited to see what Microsoft have been cooking for their next reveals. Redfall, Forza Motorsport + Horizon 5 expansion, Starfall Goldeneye, who knows what else. Can't wait.
Hopefully there is a push for more kb&m games on the series x|s. Whether kb&m exclusive games or more games that allow kb&m. Probably in the minority here.
Well Sony did a good job showcasing games coming to Xbox yesterday. LOL
That was a prime example of if you don't have anything decent to show, best to wait it out.
Oof... May? That's a long time and we got no games ahead of us. Again, delaying Stalker was a big hit. All that is coming is Tunic and while that game looks nice it's not something that is appealing to the masses. I'm afraid Starfield is the only game we will get this year from Xbox...
@blinx01 tbf I think last night's State of Play could have had the subtitle "contractual obligations".
A May Showcase would suggest E3 is fully cancelled this year but either way it's disappointing that Microsoft still doesn't take note from Nintendo and Sony with regards to doing an event earlier in the year.
Nintendo's 3 general Direct setup (1 around February, 1 around June and 1 around September) with other events happening throughout the year is perfect.
@Grumblevolcano Deciding to do an event is the easy part. Filling it with content is the challenge. All microsoft events so far have suffered from lack of gameplay showcases so far and showing games that are very early in development.
Hopefully this year there will be more gameplay and release dates for things.
I feel like there are too many showcases for all the major companies (Xbox, Sony, Nintendo) and as a result the quality drops significantly. Realistically Xbox will save its major announcements/trailers for E3 so I would rather just wait for that than be disappointed.
These showcases have gotten out of hand with expectations. Everyone is expecting that the next one will be better than all previous showcases. Getting opinions on youtube or gaming websites is almost always 2 outcomes "that show was garbage" or "that show was amazing." It is perfectly fine for a showcase to be somewhere in the middle. Sony for example had enough games to show yesterday so they did. They told us it was going to be 20 minutes and would primarily focus on japanese developers. That's exactly what it was. I would rather have a mediorcre show then sift through tweets.
I would suggest you go into the xbox show only looking for updates on Starfield, Redfall, hellblade, and forza. Then you can be surprised if they drop updates on Avowed, fable, etc or new announcements.
@Grumblevolcano E3 was cancelled a long while ago unfortunately, we will just be seeing various streams from publishers.
I just want a summer e3 style event. I like to have a party then with my gaming friends. It’s gamers Christmas. Just fun. That’s why I don’t want to transition to multiple small events. I like one big event.
Granted. That’s personal preference talking… not any form of objective rationality.
@Wilshiire
My guess to this is be instead of one 2+ hour long conference
They do one in may focus on games hitting this year. Then September's be games for 2023
Plus as a few mentioned there prior showcases didnt show gameplay. So this could allow for a bit more gameplay demos if you make each show 2 hours and give time to flesh out each game shown
Q) Is May too late for the next Xbox showcase?
A) Depends on the focus of the showcase. An E3 presentation has the ability to bring more than just Xbox fans to view the showcase as there are plenty of gamers who will try to view as many E3 presentations as possible, even when it doesn't specifically appeal to them (I know I do). They May showcase can also be a good way to tease some things or simply have larger presentations for a couple or so games and have the larger array of games showcased at E3.
In terms of new announcements, I would say May is too late and feel March would have been a better slot with more time to breathe. It'd give just as much space as June-to-September (if this news is true) and cover a nice Spring-Summer-Autumn coverage of news.
