You could say that Bethesda has been drip feeding info regarding Starfield since its initial reveal a few years ago. Even if concrete details have been scarce, we're still loving what we're seeing, and even more so after this new developer interview.
A new Bethesda blog post sits down with Design Director Emil Pagliarulo, who discusses his time at Bethesda Game Studios. Naturally, the conversation quickly moves to Starfield, and Pagliarulo shares his excitement about what the team is creating.
"But then you get to that point where systems really start to come online, and things start to work well, and gel, and you see everything forming into the vision you had when you first started on this crazy journey. When that first happened with Starfield, it really was an, 'Oh. Oh wow. Yeah. This is… something really special. Players are going to lose their minds.' Now we just have to finish it!"
Bethesda's Design Director also spoke about the team's day-to-day Starfield development progress, and how the team is always trying to look from a player perspective when making design decisions.
"You know, our unofficial studio motto is, “Great games are played, not made.” And that means experiencing Starfield the way a player would, at every stage of development. We’re brutally honest with ourselves about what is and isn’t fun, what does and doesn’t work – and doing what we need to do so players get the experience they expect and deserve."
This all sounds fantastic and — combined with everything else we've heard so far — gets us real excited for Starfield later this year. Now all we need is some proper gameplay but, summer is coming, and we're expecting a Starfield deep dive sometime around 'E3 season'.
Do you like the sound of Starfield so far? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Nope. Not hyped. Release the game then I'm hyped
Yeah, I can't wait for this game. I have a feeling it will be a game I will play for years.
They would lose their minds more if this finally got a release date
No preorders
Bring it on, let’s see it, let’s see a 15 minute gameplay direct with things explained. Then I will start to get hyped.
This poor game has sooooo much to live upto and expectations etc. mainly due to be honest as it seems to be the only big AAA coming out of Microsoft Studios this year 2022.
It is like all in this game, which isn’t great for the development team.
If the game screws up and is not a 90 plus AAA and no other AAA Xbox exclusive releases this year.
2022 will go down as the most abysmal Xbox AAA exclusive game year ever.
That’s how much is riding on this one poor single game.
@Dezzy70
I think that's a bit dramatic.
Xbox has Redfall, Deathloop, Starfield, Forza Motorsport and a bunch of timed exclusives.
Bare in mind PS5 only has GOW: Ragnarok and Forspoken announced left for the whole remaining 9 months of 2022.
So unless both studios have big unannounced projects set for release in 2022, it's not all doom and gloom.
Can we see the game please.
@Resi32 you mean the release date they announced last year?
Really? Thought Bethesda would say : "Players are going hate Starfield. Has more issues than cyberpunk 2077."
There’s a fine line between building something up, and setting themselves up for a fall. They need to release gameplay footage and keep expectations in check…regardless of it eventually blowing minds or not. As you know the daggers are going to be out for this game anyway.
@Bleachedsmiles It's all about the 6 month to gold rule. Developers would follow that, be hella lot less issues.
@Dezzy70 @Dezzy70
"If the game screws up and is not a 90 plus AAA and no other AAA Xbox exclusive releases this year.
2022 will go down as the most abysmal Xbox AAA exclusive game year ever."
Easy there fella. Now you're in danger of just embarrassing yourself.
If the quote above really is how you think of games, than two of the biggest Sony IP's released so far this year HFW and GT7 are pretty much making this year the most abysmal Sony AAA game year ever by your own admission. Since neither scored 90 plus on Metacritic.
I suggest you step out of Sony's corner and have a modicum of perspective.
@LX_FENIX On GamePass day one... so why preorder - I will pre-load it though.
@Sol4ris
Don’t care about Sony just want the Xbox games to be at their best and what us Xbox gamers desire and probably deserve.
I’ve been with Xbox since day one original Xbox and Halo etc.
I think they're right, fwiw.
With Zelda gone this is now the big game of the year for me, can't wait to play it
Zelda was delayed.
Goty is between Horizon, Elden Ring, God of War and this. Hogwarts could be a surprise, but the studio isn't known to be on that level.
I don't doubt Bethesda's ability to deliver a great game here, but I really hope player's will lose their mind over how great it is
And not with how disastrous it is upon release with bugs and glitches galore.
@blinx01 I'd say your wrong. My purchase of an xbox solely depends on this game and it has to be goty level. FH5 will be better than FM7 so it doesn't add much.
If it's low 80, I'll wait a bit longer. Not sure what to expect on 2023.
Just be quiet and let the game do the talking. They are setting themselves up for expectations they will never meet with these comments.
Ah yes. And Cyberpunk "looked great" on last gen consoles. I'll believe it when I see it. These kinda statements mean nothing.
@blinx01
We shall see what we get when we get it.
I know was a bit doom and gloom but it’s about time it picked up now and Xbox rises like a phoenix.
Series x is the best designed, built and most powerful console. The GUI, all features like VRR, Smart Delivery, Quick R etc.
it’s all just waiting for exclusive top end AAA games.
@Dezzy70 I actually agree. Switched over to Team Green for the first time this gen because of the promise of everything Xbox was building and decisions they were making. I am patient. I know big things are brewing and it's going to be great, but I would love to start seeing the realization of that potential. So far we have received Psychonauts 2, which is amazing, but I feel (and hope) that Starfield will be the launchpad, so to speak, of what will be an epic run of first party content, the likes of which Xbox has never seen before!
@AJM59 that was a provisional date and no way that it was going to stick. I mean a real it will actually release then date. Not a guess
They don't mean it'll be awesome. They mean the player character's brain will clip through their skull object through a wall and you won't be able to find it again without loading an old save.
@RevGaming Lets be honest, GOTY is between Elden Ring, Elden Ring and Elden Ring. I haven't even played it yet and know this is true 😂
The only way my mind will be blown is if
1 - if they actually release the game this year without delaying to next year
2 - they release to a quality standard above what they've ever released in their previous history
Game wise I'm sure it'll be a great game but when I think of Starfield I expect delays and bugs ahead of what the actual gameplay will be like. No reason to think otherwise based on history and after Cyberpunk felt like the final straw I don't think MS will let Starfield release to Bethesda's usual low quality standard, hence my expectation of delays.
@NEStalgia OK, that was funny.
@carlos82 Hey, I like your avatar! Love the Saturn!
@Hexamex-Tex Some people still buy games and dont use gamepass. Also just saying "no preorders" is practically tradition at this point.
All this “Hype” and I’m like meh….if it’s Bioshock story wise, meets the addiction of The Golf Club’s ease to pick up and play, Forza’s beauty, and the fun of multiplayer Titanfall, then maybe.
12 seconds of total video and no actual gameplay feels like we’re in for a Cyberpunk like launch, update, apologize, and meme lifecycle.
I’m hyped. If the only thing that I get is an expanded building mechanic like the one in FO4, with less restrictive building zones, I’ll be all over this game.
Waiting on a deep dive like Harry Potter did.
Or atleast some unscripted gameplay.
Bet the game is delayed until 2023
@LX_FENIX Some people are missing out. Fun fact... you can still buy games when you have GamePass, for instance I just this week bought Tiny Tina's Wonderland. Another fun fact, should the game you are playing leave GamePass you get a discount at that point should you buy it. Another fun fact, it is third party games that occassionally leave GamePass.
@Hexamex-Tex True. I've actually purchased MORE games since subscribing to Gamepass. Gamepass gives me the ability to sample way more games than I otherwise would be able to. When I discover a game I like, I'll often buy it to ensure I have the ability to continue playing should it leave the service at some point in the future.
Get it done, do it right, don't take shortcuts. I'll be patiently waiting for this game hoping it lives up to expectations.
Just marketing talking to keep the game on the buzz. I hope it will be great, anyway.
Also just realised this is next generation only, Series consoles and PC only.
They need to be careful with their claims.
They are setting themselves up for a massive fall here or have some supreme confidence in the game, that of course we haven’t seen any of yet.
@InterceptorAlpha
Me waiting for a deep dive as well.
Ok. Now, less talking and more showing, please.
So they need to finish the game then run tests and quash any bugs then once it goes gold get it on disks etc if they haven't showed anything by July/August then I'd guarantee its delayed
The developers think we are going to lose our minds. Wow really. What game developers that have spent god knows how long developing the game is going to say eh well the game is ok but not great. Don't expect too much. Let us see/play the game for ourselves and let us make up our own minds. With such little time left until the alledged release date and no sign of a proper gameplay trailer, I'd say the game will be delayed until 2023.
LMAO talk is cheap. The game is coming out in 7 months, show some damn gameplay
Stop teasing and just take my money!
@UltimateOtaku91 I highly doubt there is any chance for a delay on this one. This is how this studio always handle their big release reveals. They are vague and intentionally do this cycle of teases without showing anything until very near launch. Its what they have been doing for decades and every time it has worked for them, so they will keep doing the same until it does not work (and with Game Pass its unlikely any of their big games will ever even have a chance of "failing" by Microsoft metrics.)
But to your credit: this means we should be seeing a first look (not likely in depth) somewhere between the end of June and August. That is, indeed, their "first look" window for these big November release so far.
@Tharsman I know Microsoft won't want to release this in a mess especially after 343 messing up halo infinite, so with all respect elder scrolls/fallout games are amazing but they do come with a lot of bugs, so any delay would be because of microsoft not wanting to release it with bugs etc
Thinking about it, I think they may be saving a gameplay overview like hogwarts legacy for its E3 presentation
I get the feeling this game is going to be similar to no man's sky with mining materials, building, crafting, scanning objects/wild life and freely flying between planets. But with the Bethesda trade mark story, side quests, dialogue choices and loot systems.
I'm also hoping for some space battles, upgradable ships, and some abandoned space ship exploring (hopefully light horror element)
Probably just wishful thinking but if its all that then that's my dream game
If they're so confident why have they still not shown any gameplay
@StonyKL I played 60 hours of Elden Ring (looking at how much there is left, I'm finishing it around the 70 hours mark).
I think Sekiro is better gameplay wise. All ER has new are the mounts and summons which I use frequently. Other than that, it's a new selection of weapons with mostly old ones. It had that fps issue. The graphics aren't impressive and the game recycles enemies, maps a bit much (and recycles enemies from DS). The story is simple, but it's better than the other souls games.
It's an A game. Not an A+.
I think it's slightly better than Horizon 2, but I think Horizon has the cinematic goty template so anything can happen.
I think if Starfield, Hogwarts, or God of War end up with around a 95, it's over for ER. Score doesn't matter much. I've seen games with high scores get snubbed constantly. I know what they'll choose.
@Resi32 "I mean a real release date, not a guess."
Resi my man, you sound like you belong at Home Depot... Cause you are a real tool.
Seeing as they have over 7 months until the announced date, the date your first comment declared that they had never put out yet. You are a hater, with no reason to be. People do not like hanging out with people like you.
Don't overhype it people. Keep your expectations level and you'll rarely be disappointed.
Man i want this game today lol
@LX_FENIX it is on gamepass so why preorder in the first place... If you like the game buy it after (that is what I do on games I love that I played first there)
@RevGaming I bet GoW will miss 2022 as well though
@Balta666 Hell no lol.
There's no way. They have confirmed multiple times it's this year. A delay was already done.
Why hasn't been shown? I have no idea. I think they're waiting to show other things to show it along with it in a big showcase.
I could see spider-man 2 be delayed though.
@RevGaming was Spiderman 2 dates for any year already? I highly doubt that one comes next year...
@Balta666 Um yeah.
2023.
I'll believe the delay.
@RevGaming Wolverine is defo not coming out 2023, its literally had no gameplay shown except for that announcement teaser.
@Resi32 Who said wolverine?
@RevGaming Noone but both are due 2023 and both from Insomniac. Both will be delayed.
@Resi32 Um. Nobody said wolverine is 2023. Not even sony or insomniac.
