Now that we finally know the release date for Grand Theft Auto 5 on Xbox Series X|S, we're left wondering, will there be a free upgrade of any kind? So far, it's looking like a no, sadly.
Ever since the current-gen version of GTA 5 was announced, there's been no mention of an upgrade path for last-gen players. Rockstar has been quick to tout what's new for the Xbox Series X|S version, with no mention of a free upgrade.
While we understand GTA 5 has been out on Xbox One since 2014, it is a bit disappointing there seems to be no upgrade path. This behemoth of a game has sold almost 150m units, not to mention the countless Shark Cards they'll be shifting for GTA Online.
But, that probably shows exactly why there won't be an upgrade. If Rockstar, and particularly Take-Two, think they can get some of that user base to double dip, that's a lot of money on the table.
The bright spark for GTA Online players is that there will be a new, standalone version of the online component for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S at launch, so presumably it'll be much cheaper than the main game. PlayStation users will even be getting it free for 3 months, so fingers crossed it'll go entirely free-to-play on Xbox after that point.
Do you think GTA 5 should have a free upgrade option on Xbox Series X|S? Let us know in the comments.

Really hoped for a free upgrade but if anything there better be an upgrade path. No way I’m spending another $60 on it!
Ofcourse this won’t be free.
I purposely didn't get the X1 version of GTA V because I feel like the XSX version won't be a free upgrade.
no way. i have already bought this game three times - i've given rockstar too much money for this game already.
@Kooky_Daisuke "Time to concentrate on a new game Rockstar."
You mean RDR2 Remastered?
.....if it had button mapping I'd buy it though.....
I better get a free upgrade considering the game was packaged with my Series X that I got from Microsoft
Which sucks because I already bought it on PS3 and then PS4 and then again on Series S.
I'll be turning my head away for this but the only time this game will ever catch my eye again will be when it is available on mobile phones, which is kinda of getting thier with 512gbs of storage and a slice of RDNA 1 or 2 on Samsung mobile chips but I suppose GTA 4 needs to be done first
It won't happen, unfortunately. Rockstar has made several anti-consumer moves lately with the recent and most notable being the dismal release of GTA Trilogy Remastered. They seem intent on squeezing every bit they can of the GTA brand while possibly alienating their diehard fans.
It should be a free upgrade. But I got the ps4 and pc version, so can't get the Xbox version.
I'm glad that a lot of games have included a free upgrade this generation, but I think that was so people would still buy their last gen title as games these days expect to have a long tail of DLC, live service, etc.
With GTA V it's been out for almost a decade so most people who want it already have it. So I'm not holding out hope for a free upgrade. Plus there's plenty of cheap second hand copies out there so if you DIDN'T already own it, and there was a free upgrade you'd be a sucker to buy it anyway. Of course they've got more money than god, and so could easily afford to make it free.
Personally I've finished the story mode years ago, and wouldn't really bother with playing it again, but now in 4K.

Headlines like this on Microsoft owned website will make people really upset, if it's inaccurate.
