343's latest entry in the Halo series, Halo Infinite, has just taken out the DICE Awards action game of the year. It managed to beat many other games like Deathloop, Metroid Dread, Returnal and The Ascent to win this award.
It's great to see the developer's efforts paying off after the bumpy launch which saw the game's campaign released weeks after the multiplayer component. Here's the full award in all its glory:
Update: It's also taken out the online game of the year. The other games nominated in this field included Back 4 Blood, Call of Duty: Vanguard, Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker and Knockout City.
Last month, Xbox revealed Halo Infinite was officially the biggest launch in Halo's history - with more than 20 million Spartans (players) joining the fight.

Best online game? When multiplayer had not worked since release due to awful desync.ans TB was completely unplayable unto recently where you can now play it with signature Halo Infinite desync.
Not bad for "AA" game huh @Dezzy70 ? ;P
@lolwhatno I'm not biased at all, I think both games are bang average but Returnal is an extremely niche game whereas Halo appeals to a much wider audience. Also Halo might be undercooked but Returnal was straight up broken at launch.
Can sort of understand the online side as that's where halo usually shines but I found the single player extremely boring and couldn't be bothered finishing it. Signals a terrible year for gaming to me.
Edit: haven't played returnal but people saying it's niche and a difficult game - does that mean Elden Ring can't win goty this year? I'm still on the fence for both returnal and Elden ring because of the difficulty.
I would say well deserved, but it wasn't, so I won't..
(MP was broken at launch and still is, SP campaign is boring and sterile, in pure amounts of fun can't hold a candle to Metroid Dread)
It's OK to play Halo Infinite, I did too. But giving it such public recognition and awards is only going to encourage future unfinished products.
@InterceptorAlpha I've still been keeping an eye on its population. On the xbox most played, its 20th in the UK, and 10th the US. It's still hemorrhaging players on steam. I've seen it as low as 150th, it's currently 67th, and averages 12k players.
The people who defended 6th xbox most played as good, and as if that's where it was going to stay, were really in denial.
@lolwhatno Well, Halo does have better Metacritic scores on both critic and user, than Returnal. So you thinking Returnal is better would just be your personal opinion.
@Shigurui What does popularity have to do with...
Wait...
And this is why I don't take awards seriously especially in gaming
I mean, it does have the best moment to moment action gameplay of any of the games nominated, so it's a clear winner. Returnal, Metroid, Deathloop all very good games in their own right but the FPS shooting in Halo Infinite is some of the best I've ever played, not just last year either.
@lolwhatno not biased at all mate, I think unless you're really into Halo you can see which game is better. I intially didn't even think of Returnal but figured sth like Deathloop might get action game ahead of this.
A brilliant game deserves awards like this and Halo Infinite is a brilliant game. Congrats 343!
@lolwhatno it’s my very first Halo (Series X is my first Xbox) and I gave up on Infinite by the time I’d got to the planet surface. Love / Hate Returnal - too hard for my old reflexes.
@lolwhatno I agree with the online award, but that's because the bar is so low for multiplayer games these days.
We need Titanfall 3...
@lolwhatno Copies sold has nothing to do with being niche. Souls games sell millions and they're very much considered to be niche titles.
I think this is a just award, I’ve been playing and loving the campaign, they did an excellent job with it. But I haven’t really played the multiplayer so can’t comment on that.
@Trmn8r
It won action game of the year and with great tight FPS, the grappling hook and game play probably deserved.
You know I have always said that.
My gripe is not with what is there, it is with what is not there environments, effects and graphical.
Well done Halo Infinite.
@Dezzy70 So, it isn't a perfect game. Doesn't mean it's not AAA. I think you got your definitions wrong.
"In the video-game industry, AAA (pronounced and sometimes written Triple-A) is an informal classification used to categorize games produced and distributed by a mid-sized or major publisher, which typically have higher development and marketing budgets than other tiers of games."
@S1ayeR74 MP is the best part. You call yourself Slayer and you don't play MP?!?!?
@Medic_Alert @Richnj @lolwhatno I'm positive if Returnal were anything but a Rogue it would have been massively more praised. It's such a good game with such good action....but the rogue-like just holds it back even if it was super-well done, in every way.
I'd love to see the tight gameplay of Returnal revisited into a more expansive adventure with progression beyond the rogue loop. They can't do a Returnal 2 considering "that ending", but the gameplay systems would be fantastic if they were brought back in another non-rogue title.
@lolwhatno Sorry but Returnal just isn't that fun. 90s animation and gameplay, and was even more broken than Halo at launch. It was a mess. If it were not rogue maybe it would have ended up a better game. Who knows, but I care not. It's an AA effort that some like, but many hate.
@Richnj Halo has 17k players on right now and that is just in Steam. God of War? A game that just released recently, supposedly the best single player on PS? 5k players at the moment. Halo is doing just fine.
@SpacemanJupiter it's back down to 12k again now. 17k is the peak, 12k is the average. God of War also isn't a MP title that relies on its population to sustain the game. There's a difference between those two.
Love halo infinite… probably the best game I played last year - just feels great zipping around that open world. Halo infinite demonstrates how far ahead of other fps games halos AI still is. And how nice the gun play in halo still feels.
But, it’s unfinished…so doesn’t deserve an award till it is finished. I love halo infinite but can totally recognise it’s short comings.
We seems to be in an ever increasing state of running away with hype and rewarding unfinished/unoptimised products. Last gen we saw the day 1 patch become the standard.
At the end of last gen we started seeing early access games creep in…
This gen we’re already seeing unfinished games release to critical acclaim.
This week we’ve seen a game get perfect scores that is badly optimised for all platforms.
Where do you think this gen is heading?
