You might want to check your Xbox messages today, as numerous Gold subscribers have been taking to social media to report that they've been gifted five months of Game Pass for free — due to being an "All-Star Gold member".
The messages are being sent directly on Xbox, and as far as we can see it's a single code for five months of Game Pass for console or Ultimate (depending on the message you receive). It also mentions that your subscription will continue after that time unless you cancel it.
There's been a lot of speculation that this message might be a scam, and while we haven't received it ourselves so we can't check the validity of it, it does appear to have been sent directly from Microsoft. We've also come across a variety of reports suggesting the code is working just fine, although keep in mind it's non-transferrable.
If you weren't lucky enough, don't worry — it seems only a select few people have been given access to this.
Have you been gifted 5 free months of Xbox Game Pass? Let us know down in the comments section below.

Lucky you say? That's not me then.
@gollumb82 we're built differently. I did see a guy give this code away btw.
If I have gamepass ultimate does that class has having gold?
Also xbox are probably picking people who have never subscribed to gamepass before
@UltimateOtaku91
Yup. Game Pass Ultimate is the complete package.
Read the fine print though. I got one and haven't redeemed it because I'm sticking with XBox Gold until they get rid of the program. Game Pass is just a game streaming service. As soon as you stop paying the monthly fee all the games are gone. You don't actually own them. Personally I like owning games.
If you already have Gold and redeem the trial then you're Gold is gone forever. This is MS trying to be sneaky and get their Pass #s up before end of year and try to get more people switched from Gold.
@CoolDadTx
It's not really a game streaming service, you are able to download the games etc. Obviously people who like to have "ownership" wont get that simply with having Gamepass but it doesn't stop you from still owning games if you choose to
Also, Gold isn't gone forever. If you turn off auto-renewal, your subscription to Gamepass would end after 5 months and then you can go back to having Gold if you wish
And they're not really being sneaky in trying to get their numbers up either. It's not like they're not making you aware and just auto upgrading people to Gamepass. This is an offer and even mentions that you're existing XBLG will convert at 1:1 so if you have say 7 months of Gold remaining, by taking up this offer, you'd then have 12 months of GPU on your account (the 7 months you had will convert and 5 months added from this offer)
@Royalblues
The best "deal" is to let your existing Gamepass sub expire. Then load up to 3 years of XBLG onto your account (gamepass MUST be expired before doing this)
When you load the 3 years of XBLG (max 3 years for best value) - Xbox may offer you free months for turning on auto-renewal. You should REFUSE this offer
Once the 3 years of XBLG are loaded onto your account. You can then purchase 1 month of Gamepass Ultimate and add it onto your account
It will now convert the 3 years of XBLG into GPU at a 1:1 ratio - meaning you'd now have 3 years of GPU for a lot less cost
Note that you can also use any £/$1 offers that Xbox offer you through Xbox dash or a 7/14 day GPU code (non-trial) as these will also upgrade your XBLG to GPU (but only after loading the 3 years of XBLG)
Hope that helps
@VOODOO85 that's amazing I've been auto renewing each month for the last year like a chump. Merry Christmas bud
@VOODOO85 I did this yesterday...only I chickened out and went for 2 years. I wish I had gone for the 3 as it was so easy. But was first time using a free VPN (crome extension) and purchasing 12 months of gold from Turkey. And I can't read Turkish. Anyway...I really neednt have worried as it was so easy that I don't know why I didn't do it years ago.
Basically get a free VPN. Choose your location as turkey. Buy 12 months of gold for the region (cost me £26 for 12 months...also used PayPal). Sign into the Hotmail account that's linked to your Xbox gamertag on your laptop/pc/phone still using the VPN, still location turkey. Redeem gold. Repeat.
Boot up your Xbox. Check the gold went through. Sign up for 1 month of gamepass (note that if you were offered the £1 for 1 month you lose this offer when you have gold...I ended up having to pay £10.99 for a month)...before you're asked to pay you'll get a message saying if you take this offer they'll upgrade gold to gamepass ultimate...and you'll see an expiry date.
£63 got me 2 years of gamepass. Which isn't too bad. Be crazy not to do it.
@CoolDadTx i don't know where you got that from and why you have 2 likes. Seriously, GPU is nothing like what you said. And if you think that you are losing Gold after the trial, that is also BS. In fact, your remaining Gold membership will convert to GPU even after the 5 months of the trial with no additional cost from you, with the option to revert back to Gold after the period, assuming that Xbox won't remove it by then.
@Savage_Joe
It says so in the fine print for Ultimate. If you already have Gold then that time will be converted into equivalent in Ultimate and it is a one way, permanent conversion. Once that happens you cannot go back to Gold. You have to cancel your Ultimate subscription and then get a Gold subscription again. At the beginning of the year MS was raising the price of Gold for new customers but not existing. If they were to decide to do that again in 2022 then those folks who switched to Ultimate and then decided to go back to Gold would be counted as new subscribers I wager.
You're entitled to your opinion but Ultimate is no different than Gamefly or other services. If you want to rent games to play then it is your choice but it isn't for everyone and MS recognizes that as they haven't done away with Gold yet.
@CoolDadTx if that's right, then you can do what VOODO85 said. It shouldn't be that difficult. What I don't get is why Gold loyalists don't see the value in GP. It had saved me a lot of money on games that I would otherwise regret buying. And if I liked a game, I can buy it at discount, if available.
@CoolDadTx Gamefly is honestly the way to go.
@Savage_Joe There's a few Sony fans on here who do the rounds, they'll like anything that makes no sense just as long as it's negative about Xbox
The thing about Game Pass is that you don't really realise that you want it until you've tried it. From what I've seen, the majority of people who don't like the service haven't even used it to begin with. You don't even have to fully commit to it, you can still buy games and use Game Pass to check out other games you may be interested in but don't want to buy. Game Pass is genuinely a great complement to any gamer.
@Bleachedsmiles cdkeys do them at 21.99 a lot and you can buy a 7 day ultimate ( not a trial ) from eneba to convert your gold saves a bit more money instead of paying the 10.99 , works out approx £70 for 3 years
@CoolDadTx Keep in mind it's also a "discount club" for owning, as well. It's digital rentals + streaming (if you have ultimate, no streaming on regular), but everything on the service includes discounts of varying degrees to buy. I like to use it to try things and if I like them, wait for a sale +/- a good GP member discount. A rarely pay more than 60% MSRP for digital games that are on GP, but I still get to play them when they're new without having to pay RRP. Obviously if you prefer physical, it's meaningless, though.
I do agree with you though in being paranoid about the confusion and mess of expiring it and re-renewing and all that. It works fine and lots of people do it, but I don't use Voodoo's trick for Ultimate, either, to get it cheap. I know my luck. Everything that works for everyone else will always backfire for me when I try it
Game rentals are awesome, though. It's how I played half of what I played in the 80's and 90's when carts were the equivalent of over $100 today. GP is that, except I get to play it for more than 2 nights, 3 days, don't have to pay $3.50 each, and don't have to run over to the video store at 10:00 on a Sunday night in a snowstorm to avoid the late fee. And I don't have to smell the cheap buttered popcorn at the register. Actually strike that, the cheap buttered popcorn and big 10x10 screen display of the latest movie in the back was fun. I miss that now....
@Royalblues
Yes that should work. Just make sure your GPU has fully expired.
If you still had a GPU sub active, when you come to add the first 1 year of XBLG to the account, it would say it'll extend the GPU instead but only for around 3 months (so obv not worth it)
If expired, it'll give 1 year of XBLG, then add the other 2 years for 3 years of XBLG. Then when you add 1 month GPU, it'll tell you it'll convert any remaining XBLG subscription (3 years remaining) into GPU which is what you want to happen as you'll then have 3 years of GPU at fraction of cost
