You might have seen on social media yesterday that Dying Light 2 was officially confirmed to have "gone gold", but developer Techland also stated in a press release that the work still isn't finished for the game yet.
Tymon Smektała, Lead Game Designer on Dying Light 2 pointed out that going gold is "a great sign but it doesn’t mean that our work ends here." For now though, the base game has been described as "solid" and "ready to play":
"This is it. The final and crucial moment for us. The game is ready to be manufactured, but we will not slow down. The fact that the game is done and we hit the gold status two months before the release is a great sign but it doesn’t mean that our work ends here.
There are still some upgrades and tweaks to add, and community feedback to implement, but the base is solid and ready to play. I’m extremely proud of the whole team!"
For those unaware of the term, "going gold" typically means that the standard game is ready to be pressed to disc, but it doesn't incorporate things like pre-launch patches, so it's hard to tell how finished it really is right now.
That said, we haven't got long until we find out! Dying Light 2 is currently set to release on February 4th, 2022, and it seems unlikely that it'll be delayed again. Let's hope this sequel can live up to the high expectations of its fans.
Will you be picking up Dying Light 2 when it arrives next February? Let us know down in the comments.

So why couldn’t it have been a Christmas release still then?
Essentially, going Gold nowadays means that the all the pieces that make the game are done. All the geometry, assets etc are all done, all the pieces are put together to form the game and playable from start to finish.
That doesn't mean that its as optimised to run as expected or that there isn't some 'bugs/glitches' that haven't been fixed. The next 2 months or so (and then no doubt months after release too when its released to 'millions' of more players), they will be tweaking, optimising and patching to improve the game. No doubt they will be playing through it again and again, then when reviewers get their copy, they'll give feedback and then once its released, the public will feedback...

No where do I see the word, "finished" . And that concerns me in today's world of gaming.
Hmm you guys not filling me with confidence, my birthday is in February so it may go on my list, it was on my Christmas List, I've held off Far Cry to get this one instead as I really enjoyed the first game.
We live in the times of games shipped in a 'ready to play' state... I'll wait for the patches and maybe pick it up a year after release (which is what I usually do). Besides, I've just bought Dead Island Definitive Edition so that'll tide me over (I've already finished Dying Light and enjoyed it a lot).
We definitely live in a PATCH world
More so than ever before.
While I agree with people in the comments about the inevitable patches the game will receive let's not forget that halo infinite won't be a finished product at launch either
If the is still work to do then how the hell has it "gone gold", going gold means it's done and ready to print
I really am sick of this "release it now and patch it later" mentality of publishers now a days
