It's been a while since we last heard anything about upcoming Xbox exclusive FPS CrossfireX, with the most recent update arriving in the form of a trailer back in August, but now Remedy Entertainment has commented on its progress.
In the company's Q3 Business Review, it's mentioned that Remedy's team "is currently focused on finetuning and polishing the technical details of the story version of the game to provide the best quality and gaming experience."
If you didn't know, Remedy is working on the single-player portion of CrossfireX, which is set to be a paid add-on for the game, while the free-to-play multiplayer component is being worked on by Smilegate Entertainment.
Therefore, Remedy wasn't able to provide any details on a release date aside from confirming that it's "getting closer", explaining that "the exact timing of the launches is at the discretion of Smilegate and its publishing partners".
CrossfireX has been slated for a 2021 release throughout the year (it was initially supposed to release in 2020), but it seems like it's going to miss that window — unless we get an announcement in the very near future.
"CrossfireX delivers an intense first-person shooter experience where players are immersed in a sprawling global conflict between the world’s two most formidable private military factions... Choose your side and complete objective-based missions across a variety of classic and innovative modes featuring tightly crafted gameplay and cinematic visuals."

This is published by Xbox Game Studios, so will it come to game pass?
I'm hyped for this because of Remedy's involvement. Control was so freakin' good, it really reminds you just how good they are crafting campaigns and making incredibly satisfying shooting. Some of the best guns in gaming belong to Remedy titles all the way since Max Payne, after all, just in terms of feedback and feel.
I don't care about the multiplayer at all, but then again, I'm an old gamer man who hasn't played anything competitive for years I'm sure Smilegate will do a fine job there... I just don't understand this release model. Its a paid add-on for the f2p game? Why? Just make it a standalone thing. I don't wanna have to download the multiplayer to play the single player; when will developers and publishers learn that storage space and download times are not something people wanna be wasteful with? I was SO THRILLED when Halo Infinite split up those two components, and I sincerely hope we see more and more games follow suit as we get further into this new generation...
I hope by the time it launches, Crossfire X's campaign ends up going standalone, that's all.
@Chaudy The paid bit? No idea yet.
@Vinsanity They might end up splitting it into two, full details haven't been revealed yet. All we know is that the multiplayer is a free-to-play experience and the campaign is a paid one.
@Chaudy it's been a confusing game to try and track down info on. At one point on Microsoft's website, Microsoft was listed as the publisher. But now it is just Smilegate. This quote was at the bottom of the July 2020 Showcase trailer:
"Crossfirex multiplayer is free to play (Xbox Live Gold required), single player campaign not in Xbox Game Pass (sold separately)"
So its a weird one.
@Tarps ah okay, I thought it was backed by Xbox Game Studios so would land on Game Pass. Thanks for the info, it's definitely a confusing one.
I wish they would release the multiplayer part of the game first.
Like who really cares about the story part of a Counter-Strike kinda game? The 6 people who were really into Condition Zero?
Remedy has done some amazing job with story based games, but this is just an add on story to a game played by people who don't play these games for stories.
I'd enjoy a sim, slow paced fps to mix in with halo and bf2042. Something like counter strike or Americas Army. Objective based, one death, friendly fire, tactical.
@Chaudy
No.
It was confirmed prior that it is a paid title and part of the battle pass for the F2P multiplayer element.
