Blizzard's latest investor's call has revealed the company is now planning to launch Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV "later".
Earlier this year Activision Blizzard ruled out a 2021 release, and now Blizzard wants to give both teams even more time to ensure these "anticipated titles" will be in the best state possible at launch.
Here's the full update:
As we have worked with new leadership in Blizzard and within the franchises themselves, particularly in certain key creative roles, it has become apparent that some of the Blizzard content planned for next year will benefit from more development time to reach its full potential.
While we are still planning to deliver a substantial amount of content from Blizzard next year, we are now planning for a later launch for Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV than originally envisaged.
These are two of the most eagerly anticipated titles in the industry, and our teams have made great strides towards completion in recent quarters. But we believe giving the teams some extra time to complete production and continue growing their creative resources to support the titles after launch will ensure that these releases delight and engage their communities for many years into the future.
These decisions will push out the financial uplift that we had expected to see next year. But we are confident that this is the right course of action for our people, our players, and the long-term success of our franchises.

How can you delay Diablo IV when there is no release date? The good thing is that Grim Dawn is coming to XBox soon.
Delays can be frustrating but do you know what's even more frustrating? When they release a broken game. Out of the two, I would take delays any day. And yeah, it would be nice that if they didn't announce dates and then backtrack but on some level, you gotta realise hype keeps the train rolling and if no one is at the station waiting, ticket sales will suck. (The metaphor sounded cooler in my head).
My point is, as a consumer we have to rationalise delays are very likely and in all probability, any release date announced, is more of a prediction. It would be nice however, if the gaming industry would be more transparent, maybe build hype via continuous updates etc.
I don't know, I'm not a wizard....yet, but what I do know is that moaning about delays change nothing.

What was I talking about again? Oh yeah, Lion King. They need to make a new lion king game.
@FriendlyOctopus Not gonna lie, that Lion King bit me properly laugh out loud. Thanks 😄
They need to hurry with overwatch 2, the first one has seriously dropped off and the player base almost dead, same events the last 3-4 years. If valorant comes to consoles first then overwatch 2 has no chance
Most company's give release dates/release windows when they are still early in development or a ways off from going gold which to me is pointless, I wish games would only announce a release date once its near to completion or gone gold
No one cares about Blizzards games new leadership or not.
Don’t care. Blizzard sucks.
I'd certainly hope so given their recent release of Diablo 2 is hot garbage with people having to wait in queues to play and getting kicked off randomly only to have to wait again.
Blows my mind that there isn't more of a mess about it when something kirk Cyberpunk had what happened but it was actually playable.
@Royalblues good call
