The release of Diablo 2: Resurrected has subtly snuck upon us today, and so have the reviews. With such an iconic game, does the new iteration do the series justice? Or should fans stick to Diablo 3 for the fix of the franchise?
Let's dive into what critics are saying about Diablo 2: Resurrected:
Game Informer (8.75/10)
Diablo II: Resurrected shows why the original title remains the standard against which all other ARPGs are judged. While it doesn’t come with many hooks and ever-evolving content that has become a baseline for the genre as it transformed into a game-as-service model, not all games need to be played with forever in mind. Diablo II: Resurrected proves that Blizzard’s classic is still a blast, even today. Whether it’s your first foray into hell and beyond or your thousandth hour, Diablo II: Resurrected is worth the time.
Destructoid (8.5/10)
Diablo II: Resurrected did what it was supposed to as a re-release, and it managed to simultaneously preserve the original game. It’s a shame that the talented studios behind it have to deal with the failure of Activision leadership overshadowing their work.
NME (4/5)
A stunning recreation of Diablo 2, this will be essential for gamers of a certain age, while the uninitiated will probably get more of a kick out of it as a game design time capsule than a series contender in the sea of live games vying for their attention. If nothing else, Diablo 2 Resurrected is the definitive version of a classic.
God Is A Geek (8/10)
If you’ve never played the original, then Diablo 2: Resurrected is a great entry point. Some consider the second game to be better than the third (I’m personally a huge Reaper of Souls fan, though) and it’s easy to see why. It’s a more uncluttered and straightforward proposition, with a superb suite of classes and a great variety of biomes in which to tackle its procedurally-generated maps. It’s hard to hide its age even under the layer of polish, but Diablo 2: Resurrected is still a damn fine game.
Dexerto (7/10)
Diablo 2 Resurrected achieves what it set out to do: remaster Diablo 2. Its enhanced visuals and spectacular cinematics repackage the game in a whole new way, making it feel as though it really is your first playthrough all over again.Breaking this immersion, though, are a slew of irritating bugs that are likely to be fixed soon. As patches drop over time we hope this sorts itself out.
Early reviews are mostly positive, although there's not too many to go off yet. As a result, there's not a true Metacritic consensus at the time of writing, but it seems as though it will sit around the 80 mark once more reviews pour in.

Already installed and waiting to get off work to play.
Just wish I had known that even single player requires an online connection. That'll probably cut my number of hours significantly.
I'd like to find out for myself whether or not the game is any good, but I cannot connect to the Battle.Net, meaning I cannot play the blasted game! Worse still, I don't intend to play it online anyway...
Edit: Is anyone actually playing it yet, or am I alone in being unable to play it?
I'm loving it. Servers are down for 30 min right now, but got in right at launch for an hour. Now to find people to play with
@Fiendish-Beaver The removed offline mode for Xbox and Playstation whereas Switch still has it.
On the original release you could play offline without a connection, however on this release they saw fit on all consoles, except Switch, to require an online connection for single player.
Currently in the process of getting a refund for this BS myself.
@InterceptorAlpha It is bloody annoying! 3 hours of pressing 'A' on the loading screen in an attempt to play a game that I pre-ordered when it first became available. I don't even know whether I could get a refund now as I ordered it a while back.
Surely it is not beyond their capabilities to work out how many games had been pre-ordered, add a few more for release day purchases, and then set up the requisite amount of servers to allow people to play the game that they have actually paid for? It's very frustrating to say the least...
@Fiendish-Beaver Tell me about it. I actually pre-ordered a while back as well, even made use of some of the Diablo 3 bonuses, I fully expect them to revoke access though when it is completed.
It is super infuriating that another console has additional FUNCTIONAL features. We're not talking about supporting haptics or something small, but a legitimate, game changing, feature.
@InterceptorAlpha I take it you're talking about the PlayStation? What have they got as an extra?
@Fiendish-Beaver Nah. Xbox. They had a couple packages you could get on the store
One that was just Diablo 2. One that was Diablo 2, 3 and pre-order goodies.
Or, if you already owned Diablo 3, a version that just included Diablo 2 and the bonuses.
As far as the bonuses, they were all cosmetic. One made the Diablo 3 barbarian look like the Diablo 2 remake barbarian, a pet Mephisto, and some wings.
@SplooshDmg Warcraft 3 was bad when it was new. Reforged just made it all more obvious.
@InterceptorAlpha Ahh, right. I bought the basic Diablo 2 version as I already had Diablo 3. Mind you, the front loading screen that I've been looking at for the past 7 hours has a fun mini game (well, fun for a few seconds anyway); you press 'A', wait a few seconds and the game tells you need to connect to Battle.net. It then pretends to do something, and you get to repeat the steps all over again. Mind you, I've played repetitive games before, but this one takes the mick....
@SplooshDmg lol. The only thing worth remembering about that game was the repeat click sound byte for one of the hunting elves in the expansion pack demstrating her "human call." Neither the characters nor the gameplay measured up to WC2 or SC otherwise.
But, hey! At least it wasn't AoEIII!
Early 3d was a bad era for RTS fans. Empire Earth was fantastic though. Goodman's "it's definitely not AoE, honest!" Game.
@SplooshDmg Well, you like bad games for some reason, but at least you know not to eat the yellow snow!
@SplooshDmg Same management, same problem
The 3s... They just couldn't transition to 3d well, and they seemed to forget what the audience wanted. And most of them lost the original teams behind what made it work. It.... Was a bad time to be an rts fan for sure....
Is there any news on the servers, @Flurbdurb? The game launched over 22 hours ago, and I still cannot join a server to play a game that I want to play solo. I spent the whole of yesterday evening, all the way through to midnight, trying to play my game, but being stuck on the front screen. And now I find myself in exactly the same position 14 hours later. It's just not acceptable...
