The news of Myst joining Xbox Game Pass next week has been met with excitement. For years we've been the one console family that has missed out on the iconic title, but now, not only are we getting the game, but a graphically superior version. In fact, it's said to be using AMD Fidelity FX Super Resolution on Xbox, which is a pretty big deal.
Buried within the official Xbox Wire announcement was the news about this. It will allow the developers at Cyan Worlds to "crank the graphics quality much higher than [they] typically would be able to". Additionally, both the Xbox Series X and Series S versions will achieve a solid 60fps in terms of performance.
"We rebuilt Myst from the ground up to look stunning and perform amazingly on a variety of gaming systems. One of the technical features we’ve used to achieve this is AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution [FSR]. This allows us to crank the graphics quality much higher than we typically would be able to. Thanks to FSR, Myst ican run in 4K at a smooth 60fps on Xbox Series X with the highest graphics setting across the board, and at 1440p at 60fps on Xbox Series S!"
With the use of FSR, it's said that it will "effectively decrease the screen percentage of the game down in the background, then allow the super sampling process to sharpen the image". This enhancement will see an almost "75% increase in performance on Xbox Series X|S on a 4K display, without sacrificing much visual fidelity at all."
As you can see from the comparison image, the loss in visual quality is barely evident:
Myst launches for Xbox Game Pass on August 26, and along with the graphical improvements, it will also include different language options, new accessibility features and more. It's the perfect time to check out the 1993 classic!

This is pretty sweet!
Since native resolution really doesn't matter all that much anymore, it's great to see that the developer prioritized pushing graphical features and framerate to the max with FSR rather than focus on achieving native 4K!
I am sure people will always complain that it isn't native 4K and that they didn't buy a Series X to play sub-4K games, but I think those people really need to keep expectations in check. It's a $500 console, not a PC with an RTX 3090 that costs thousands.
@GamingFan4Lyf Definitely agree with keeping expectations in check. This is super good news for next generation consoles.
@GamingFan4Lyf and even with a 3090 DLSS is used often.
Idc if it takes super sampling or the new console infrastructure to accomplish it, but I would like to see a 4k "comparable" resolution, with raytracing, at 60fps become a standard for this gen. I hope FSR can seemingly be a way to accomplish that, as we see here.
@Xiovanni Microsoft has ML Supersampling within DirectML (even working with Nvidia to get it implemented into DirectX 12), but I don’t think it has made it to Xbox, yet.
ML was mentioned as part of Microsoft initial blog post about the Series consoles, so it does support DirectML, I just don’t think the Supersampling part has released.
In the meantime, FSR is a good middle ground.
