The Xbox April 2021 update has reportedly begun rolling out now to all Xbox users, and while it's not the biggest update we've seen over the past 12 months, it does add a few cool features and quality-of-life improvements.
Here's a brief overview of what's on the way, with more details available at Xbox Wire:
-
Achievements
Last month, we started rolling out and testing achievement experiences in the Xbox app, and starting today, select gamers can check out monthly leaderboards to see how you rank against your friends.
We’ll also be adding the ability to view achievements on game detail pages to help track your progress. Everyone will see these updates in the app by the end of the month, and we’ll continue refining the experience over time.
- Play Xbox Game Pass games with your friends
Playing games with your friends just got easier with Xbox Game Pass on your console. Play with Friends now appears when friends are playing any Xbox Game Pass game. You can either jump right into a joinable multiplayer session or begin installing the games your friends are currently playing.
- New game recommendations and collections coming to Xbox Game Pass
Explore new game recommendations and collections in Game Pass on your console. Discover another gem based on your gameplay history with “Because you played,” or find a game to play with friends in “Multiplayer.” And that’s not all – we’re adding even more collections like first-person shooters, science fiction, horror, sandbox, mystery, anime, fantasy, cute, and more.
- Suspend game and speed up your downloads
Download your games as quickly as possible with the new suspend game feature in My games & apps. Today, the queue warns you when your active game is slowing download speeds. Now you’ll have the option to suspend your active game in order to free up bandwidth and get the most efficient download speeds. Then, with Quick Resume, you can jump right back into your game whenever you want to start playing again.
Which of these new features are you most excited for? Let us know in the comments below.

Suspend games is welcome. Was annoying getting quarter speed downloads because a game was running.
Such a feature packed UI.
They made the right choice to build on the Xbox one UI for series consoles instead of starting all over again and have us waiting for old features to become available again.
Overall the series x, UI and gamepass deserve better praise and being honest to sell more.
I know UK and USA sell out quick but it’s the other countries in the EU etc that haven’t taken to next generation Xbox as well, hence lower sales than the competition.
Hopefully word and mouth and when some AAA in house games start to come the series s and x will get the sales in those countries.
@SegataSanshiro
The one thing Sony and Nintendo, I have a switch.
Going for them is the new games. Ok some are old/new and some remakes as well.
But they are games take Mario world 3d/Bowsers fury a remake but it sold extremely well and switch consoles along with monster Hunter rise, not my sort of game that one. Around 750k consoles in one week.
Series x needs the games the big IP to take on Sony and Nintendo in the rest of Europe etc.
Maybe in time and with gamepass help it may make some gains in those countries, but it will have an up hill battle with both PS5 and Switch.
I think outside the USA and UK the general public don’t have that passion for Xbox. Don’t forget even in the USA and UK, Xbox will have to battle like crazy to get the Xbox s/x above PS5 and Switch let alone outside of those countries.
Time will tell, but all three major players are needed to keep good competition.
@SegataSanshiro
I think the UK maybe close later on and maybe they might take the UK.
In the 360 era, my favourite Xbox era of all time so far, the games the new IP etc was amazing and loads of people I knew had 360 and the 360 was in favour overall against Sony until the end when the PS3 did gain some ground.
Only time will tell this time but it’s the games that sell the console the 360 proved that in the UK, when everyone was playing and talking about how great Gears of war, Forza Horizon, Halo and Fable etc was.
For me one of the biggest deciding factor was that most of my online friends were made with the original xbox when it went online. Can you say ghost recon island thunder? So that has been a big factor then the 360 was the original home of oblivion and mass effect which also was huge. So games do play a big part just not the only part. there is just no playstation exclusive that I am enamored with I really didn't enjoy days gone or the last of us. I am really looking forward to fable I hope it is not three years out. If I can play basically the same games then being able to play with the same friends I have made over sixteen years is really my biggest deciding factor.
So basically, more nudges to get you to take Game Pass with your Xbox.
Same good features there. The suspend game one is most welcome.
@Dezzy70 Nintendo are the masters at game recycling. I think a game is new and find out Nope it's from the WIi or Wii U..
@S1ayeR74
From the wii u, I sort of understand as not many of them sold at all.
At the end of the day it works, look at console Switch and game sales of Mario 3d world etc. Let alone Mario Kart 8.
@S1ayeR74 I always wondered who they were fooling with that. Now I know.
I wouldn't mind the WiiU ports, I know nobody bought the machine so the games are "new" to the majority of people, but it still feels off when they keep presenting games that aren't new as new because they know the majority of customers don't know the history. It's a shade of dishonest. And it's frustrating as a WiiU owner that the last 2 years of Switch have just been reselling everyone else games that I already bought 8 years ago. Imagine if Microsoft's big games the next 2 years were Halo 4, Halo 5, Crackdown 3, and Forza Motorsport 7, because they knew nobody bought the prior console? It's great if you were on PS4 last time to get these "new" games.....but if you owned an X1 it would suck quite a lot. Same for Switch, I bought a Switch and the past 2 years of Switch have been selling my my own library from the prior gen as "new."
I think Sony's treating Vita customer better than N's treating WiiU customers at this point. And I happen to be both...
@NEStalgia Yes I didn't realise they were just reselling older games for a while when I got my Switch first. Still has a few cool games on it, but a lot of re-releases for sure.
I have a Vita too so was glad to see they won't be closing its store down, for now.
