Celeste was an absolute achievement in video game design, perfectly blending an emotional narrative with its hard-as-nails gameplay. It was never frustrating, but rather a constant testament to your own strengths. Developer Extremely OK Games knocked it out of the park, so the announcement of their new game Earthblade has us very excited.
Coming in 20XX, as cited by the team, it's described as "2D explor-action game in a seamless pixel art world". Little else is known outside of the title reveal, but a sound clip gives a taste of the ambiance through its stellar musical score.
Further details can be found in a blog post from the developer, although it seems like the game is way, way off. They confirmed it will "probably be a while" before more information on the game is released, but the team seems excited to share its existence, and we can't blame them.
"I am so excited about this project. I can see the whole thing in my head. Not perfectly, mind you — most of the details are still pretty blurry in my mental image, and I'm sure a lot will change along the way. But I can see the general shape of it, and I feel really good about where it's going. Now it's our job to turn this ephemeral, pristine mind-object into a real, imperfect & human actual-object. We'll be here, slowly grinding away at that task every day. We really hope that at the end of this, some of you will enjoy what we make."
Instead of sharing images along the development track as they did with Celeste, the team has decided to opt for a "big reveal that will hopefully blow your socks off". As for now, the aim is to get the "general vibe", and that feeling we're getting is cosy Secret of Mana and EarthBound vibes.
While it may be a way off for now, we're excited to know another project is in the works. Whether it will meet the dizzying heights of Celeste remains to be seen, but we have faith Extremely OK Games can create something special.
