In a surprise announcement we did not expect on a Tuesday afternoon in January, Bethesda has revealed it is working on an Indiana Jones game.
The trailer reveals very little, but it's shown to be worked on by both Bethesda and MachineGames, the team behind the fantastic Wolfenstein reboot titles. A table can be seen with iconic Indiana Jones imagery, including the classic whip.
On Facebook a short description from Bethesda reads:
"A new Indiana Jones game with an original story is in development from our studio, Machinegames, and will be executive produced by Todd Howard, in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. It'll be some time before we have more to reveal, but we’re very excited to share today’s news!"
We're unsure whether this will be an Xbox exclusive or not, but we're sure it's in capable hands with the team behind the Wolfenstein series, and we can't wait to hear more.

LucasFilm Games/LucasArts are back I guess
It'll definitely be a multiplat (Xbox and PC) but would not surprise me if it went to PS5 after a year. But at the same time, I actually don't believe Microsoft would have the guts to keep it off PS5.
70% chance PC/Xbox/PS5 same day
30% chance PC/Xbox then PS5 down the line
Imo
An Unchartered for the Xbox? This will probably end up as a disappointing Tomb Raider clone but I'd much prefer a Wolf3D style FPS. Loved Wolfenstein so another one with Indy paint and an interesting story would be very welcome. Without the Bethesda bugs of course
@Lajt I hope so! Some amazing things came from LucasArts and I hope it's spirit lives on!
When the Indiana Jones theme kicked in it literally gave me goosebumps!
Well here we have Xbox's answer to Uncharted. What better franchise than the one that inspired that series?
Personally, I think this will be Xbox exclusive simply because it was announced after the acquisition. It's more straightforward than existing franchises such as Elder Scrolls and Fallout that are already on other platforms.
I think this'll only be on PC and Series X|S. Psychonauts 2 and (maybe) Halo Infinite seem like the end of XB1 outside of xCloud streaming.
I would love a Indiana Jones game from Bethesda..
@Menchi The buyout has not competed yet so Bethesda could still plan for PS5 but I think if the deal goes through before any platform announcements it’s going to be Xbox/PC exclusive.
@kingv84 Could be like the other worlds, where the deals were made before the buyout so will be honoured. Otherwise it'll just be a non exclusive multiplatform game on Xbox and PC.
So gamepass day n date?
Its quite probable they licenced the property before the Microsoft acquisition and I'm not sure Disney will want their properties missing out on such big markets either, so I'd be very surprised to see it skip the PS5. That said I'll be playing this on my Xbox/PC
@Grumblevolcano they only said a year or two of support for last gen so yeah this will likely be next gen only unless they actually started making the game a while ago. Phil did say he's excited for all the games they are working in that weren't announced yet.
Fantastic news! Love Indiana Jones (1-3, pretend 4 doesn't exist) and I liked the Emperor's Tomb back in the day. Can't wait!
I’m not a fan of bethesda games but I’m a big fan of Indiana Jones. I’m really intrigued by this. It will end up being like a uncharted type of game? Which is brilliant, cause the uncharted games are brilliant.
@GamingFan4Lyf I wonder if it will be an fps if MachineGames are doing it. Maybe they don't want to make it similar to Uncharted and gameplay will be more like Mirror's Edge in terms of climbing.
@Krzzystuff It's a Microsoft owned studio so yes GamePass day and date. Hurrah!
@Lajt I hope it’s not a FPS; Xbox has plenty of those.
This is really exciting! I cannot wait for more information. I hope it's similar to Uncharted/Tomb Raider in gameplay.
Yessss! Love Indy, this is amazing news.
@Jslade @kingv84
Ditto for me. I hope it's an Xbox version of Uncharted. Great potential here.
@Grot not sure why you'd come for comments like "non exclusive multiplatform game?". It seems a really boring but factual comment. I was more interested in how many people would say Unchartered clone (I did myself).
Seems too obvious hopefully as I'm wanting something different. There's already been 6 Unchartered (all great) and a handful of Tomb Raiders (first two were ok) so I'm done with that template now.
Come on LucasArts - throw in some tentacles with your Indy...
I’m really hoping it’s third person and not too long off.
Ah I’d live an Indy game but by Bethesda? Hmm I Think it’s something I’ll sadly pass because I’m not a lover of Bethesda games but hopefully it will do well for other developers to show an interest
I don't like movie based games, but I'm open minded. I hope it's a fps tho. That's machine games dna.
@Krzzystuff day 1.
stop saying day n date
@Reverandjames That;s because sony lets disney use spidey in the mcu.
To echo some of the comments, I would LOVE if this was Xbox’s answer to Uncharted. I adore those games and will never get enough.
Also, why do people always say that Uncharted and the Tomb Raider games are the same format? I always wonder, “have you actually played these games??” One is basically an RPG (TR) and the other isn’t at all (Uncharted). Just because you climb around in both doesn’t make the gameplay the same - similar, sure, but TR is much, much more similar to The Last of Us than Uncharted.
I'm not sure how much more I can take, what with Bond and Indy getting new games. Makes me wonder what big movie franchise is next in line to get the gaming treatment?
I guess this will be Xbox's answer to Uncharted then, assuming it is exclusive. I do hope MachineGames have got Wolfenstein III in the works as well, though.
@everynowandben I agree. I vastly prefer Tomb Raider over Uncharted simply because of the more in-depth gameplay. All you do in Uncharted is mindlessly shoot bullet sponges, while in Tomb Raider there's way more stuff to do. Collecting resources, crafting, using different equipment and tools while traversing the world etc. There's just more to the TR games. I'll admit though that the story in the Uncharted games is more memorable than the one in the TR games, but if the gameplay is dull then that honestly doesn't matter to me.
@LiterallyDoNotCare never!!!!!! I hear all the cool kids say it on podcasts so I'm saying it too! In all honesty it's a term i heard all the time so it stuck..let the day 1 vs. day n date battles begin!!!!
@kingv84 agree. FPS is fully covered, make something else.
@StonyKL uncharted is an Indiana Jones clone so can this be a clone of a clone of itself? Get baked and ponder that one....i double dee dare ya!
@TimG13 the next movie franchise is EA making a Space Ball's Battlefront type game... "keep firing *****!!!"
@LtSarge For me, it depends on what I’m in the mood for. With Uncharted, I can almost turn my brain off and play the game like watching a movie - like you said, it is somewhat mindless, but, the gameplay is shallow in the best way in the sense that the action is always moving forward. And because I don’t have to explore or really look for anything like collectibles for upgrading, or extra ammo, or resources for crafting or anything like that, the game becomes very cinematic and fast paced like a thrill ride. There really aren’t many games like that.
Now, overall, if I had to pick one and kill the other, I’d chose Tomb Raider every time. I’ve almost 100%’d all 3 - I absolutely those games. That being said, Uncharted has its place, and I would honestly love to see another game try something similar.
@Reverandjames Different ball game. Sony purchased movie and tv rights from Disney.
Unless Microsoft have done the same with Indy. Then Disney will control which platforms the the game appears on if that agreement was before the buyout was completed.
Wouldnt surprise me if Microsoft did throw money at Disney however...
@Krzzystuff well.....you could say Tomb Raider is a close of Indy, while Unchartered is a clone of Tomb Raider cloning Indy. Then Tomb Raider cloned Unchartered, which cloned Tomb Raider, which cloned Indy. Now Indy is cloning Unchartered, which cloned......
Starting to sound like a drinking game now!
Oh hell yes!! The last Indie game I played was on the Atari ST.. this could have the potential to knock Uncharted off its spot.
Having played all of Sonys exclusives Uncharted is the only one I enjoy and play, all the rest are boring to me. So if this ends up as an Uncharted clone and is good, I have no reason to get the next Uncharted game and a PS5, just use my Series X and Gamepass.
I have tried to get into Tomb Raider but it’s far too finicky and boring for me having to endlessly search for stuff to upgrade with. Probably don’t like the gameplay I guess? It’s a good game just not for me, Uncharted being more my style of adventure game.
@gollumb82 I’ve only ever heard good things about the emperors tomb. Do you think it’s still worth checking out or will it have aged poorly do you think?
I actually played it like 2 years ago on the PC via GoG. It's playable, but a bit clunky by today's standards. Now that you mentioned it, I still have yet to play Indiana Jones and The Fate of Atlantis Oldie, but goldie.
