We've been hearing a lot about Quick Resume over the past few weeks and months, which is a brand new game-switching feature being introduced with the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
There's been quite a bit of confusion about how this feature works, as well as why it's been so highly praised in previews thus far, so we thought we'd take this chance to clear up any questions you might have.
What Is Quick Resume On Xbox Series X|S?
Like the instant resume feature on Xbox One, Quick Resume allows you to jump right back into a game from where you left off without being required to load it from scratch again.
However, the difference this time around is that you can use Quick Resume with multiple games, allowing you to switch between them near-instantly with no waiting around for loading times.
Why Would I Want To Switch Between Multiple Games At Once?
You wouldn't! Very few of us would ever switch between multiple games within a rapid period of time, but Quick Resume works even when you've turned the console off - in fact, you can even unplug it!
Ultimately, Quick Resume is meant for players who regularly switch between their favourite three or four games over weekly, monthly or even yearly periods, which should save some serious time in the long run.
OK, So How Many Games Can I Use It For?
Based on early previews, there doesn't appear to be a set number of games Quick Resume is compatible with, so this is up in the air for now. At the very least, you can expect a handful of titles to work simultaneously.
Does Quick Resume Work With Older Games Too?
Yes! In fact, those who have been fortunate enough to get their hands on the Xbox Series X for preview purposes have been testing Quick Resume almost exclusively with backwards compatible titles.
And better yet, Quick Resume also works with games stored on external drives (HDD or SDD), and you can even use the feature with disc-based games, although obviously you'll require the disc in the drive to play them.
What Are The Critics Saying About It?
We've heard some fantastic things about Quick Resume so far, and here's a sample:
GameSpot
"In conjunction with Game Pass, where I'm often jumping between multiple games I have downloaded anyway, Quick Resume truly shines. With Quick Resume, Xbox Series X showcases some genuinely innovative next-gen tech we don't even see on gaming PCs. It's kind of a game changer, literally."
CNET
"I kinda slept on that a little bit... Now, having played a bunch of games with Quick Resume, right now, for me, this is the sort of game-changing feature of Series X."
Engadget
"This might be the coolest software feature of the Xbox Series X. Quick Resume allows players to toggle between several active games at once, rather than having to close out one title before loading another. In my experience, games load between five and ten seconds, and my character is always exactly where I left them."

I can understand that this is a big thing with this new Xbox but surely for it to work the game would have to be a digital download instead of physical, if that is the case then it would render it pretty useless for me as I don’t use gamepass and the only digital titles I own are ones that came with a physical game
@WesEds it says "..Quick Resume also works with games stored on external drives (HDD or SDD), and you can even use the feature with disc-based games.."
I presume you could load the disc into the tray and pick up where you left off. As opposed to waiting for the it to boot up, developers screen, publisher screen, intro, start menu, etc.
My friend: just 5 minutes and I will be online.
Quick Resume will be the solution after playing 30 minutes.
This feature still be very handy - even though I tend to play through 1 game at a time, I like to try different ones and dip into different online games (not midgame, but even at the load screen will be handy)
Of course it works with disk based games as the full game is downloaded on the hardrive the disk is just an authoritative key.
Great feature to have as I move between about 3 games in average.
The only answer I cannot find is does it work when switching between profiles on the same console as when you switch back from one profile to the next the resume game point is still there ???
Also when both switching profiles and playing the same game on the same console ???
Yeah, I play several games because of family and friends. Not having to save, finish a mission, or get to a checkpoint to join a game of MCC with friends, or wait for friends to boot up the game is already going to remove a lot of frustration and waiting around.
Having it so I can instantly jump in to games with my son and Fiancee, or even keep slow burn games, small arcade games, or some games I'm close to getting 100% on, without the turn off of waiting for load screens will be a life saver.
@Dezzy70 That "jeff guy" who did the temp vid had one about quick resume. it looks like its only one "resume" per title, when he used a 2nd profile to load a stored game it brought him right to where P1 left and acted like he signed in "user profile changed, sign in with profile or return to main menu" sort of thing.
But it did work with jumping between profiles and games so if P1 is playing Fallout 4 and P2 wants to play Tomb Raider, P1 will be able to Quick Resume their Fallout 4 game when P2 finishes and P2's game will be ready for when they come back.
Who wouldn’t want to be able to jump between games fast and easy?! Between faster loading times and quick resume you’ll be have more time actually playing the games you love.. sounds like a win.

That’s good then, guess I will find out on the 10th, the wait is nearly over. Cheers.
