Resident Evil Village was revealed back in June, announced as coming to Xbox Series X in 2021 but with no current-gen version in sight. However, Capcom has confirmed today that it is attempting to bring the game to Xbox One as well.
This was revealed by producer Tsuyoshi Kanda during the Tokyo Game Show 2020:
“While Resident Evil Village is being developed specifically for next-generation consoles and PC, we’re looking into delivering the experience on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as well. We’re looking into it, but we can’t make any promises. However, we will do our best to create a top-tier survival horror experience on current-generation consoles.”
We've also been treated to a brand-new look at the game as part of the Developer Insights video you see above, featuring some fresh snippets of gameplay from the eighth instalment in the horror series.

I wonder if they will continue the gameplay style they used with Resident Evil 7?
They are really under pressure from the 4 year ps4 support commitment. Otherwise it’s only targeted for next-gen that too which only the Series X version was rumoured to be working smoothly initially.
If you can do it, without the current gen consoles losing any gameplay and just a graphical regression, then do it.
To me, this says we have made the game we want and to run on next gen hardware. However, initial ports to current gen has not been smooth and we have yet to decide if the compromises we need to make are taking away too much to actually call it RE: Village or whether we have to change something and may need to differentiate it from Village because its not exactly the 'same' anymore...
just me or does this sounds disappointing.
To be fair the same happened last gen where games were made for both gen consoles so it's to be expected. Especially with 115 million PS4 and 50 million Xbox Ones - why wouldn't everyone try and sell to that market.
Would that mean the Xbox One version would upgrade to the Xbox Series version for free as part of the Smart Delivery thingy so we can technically buy at the cheaper price? Its still so confusing to me.
I don't see how this couldn't happen .Third parties always straddle during new console launches. It's too much money for Capcom to shrug their shoulders at.
@BAMozzy Development for this started on the current gen sadly but was moved forward. I imagine they either kept the current gen design choice even when it was next gen only, or else now have to revert to a compromised base of game design to allow the current hardware.
Disappointing if they do.
@Menchi Regardless of what they started with, having access to new hardware and what that hardware can offer, can change the experience and ambition.
For example, suddenly being able to use Ray Traced shadows and reflections can transform a Horror game. For example, having a reflective surface in the right place could give you a glimpse of an enemy behind you or around a corner, seeing a shadow from a doorway could alert you to something.
The layout doesn't necessarily need to change but maybe they now put a few more reflective surfaces, doors now open before you get there.
I know they could do cut scenes or scripted encounters with things like reflections or shadows but more difficult to do it with more random encounters. Things like that could really ramp up the tension, add to the atmosphere. Walking down a corridor and not sure if you saw something move in a reflective surface, not sure if that shadow is an enemy or not.
PT had the enemy behind you and if you happen to see a faint reflection in a window or some other reflective surface of something behind, that will change the experience. Thinking you are safe because you can't see something, to thinking you see something or suddenly seeing something, enhances the 'horror'.
That's just one example - they could also have decided to add a lot more enemies with more variety for example instead of being limited by CPU.
Point is, without necessarily having to make big changes to the environments, the story, the game-play mechanics etc, they could still make changes that pushes the game to another level and make it quite difficult to offer the same experience. RT for example would allow for more Random encounters that can also come at you from behind without it feeling unfair - if you can use the environmental clues. If they opt to add more enemies, reducing that for current gen affects the balance.
Of course I don't know what they are doing but they would have known that next gen was on its way before they got dev kits, may even of planned the game and built it with the highest PC spec of the time in mind without considering the PS4/XB1 hardware limitations too and only now pondering how well it may port down...
Weren’t Capcom having problems getting this game to even run on a PS5?
What would make them think they could get it running on an Xbox One/PS4? Oh that’s right..... $$$$$. Lol.
Same as any other generation transition. Games for Xbox One will be stop being made well before PS4 games because Sony is so huge
@Dpullam it’s the same style. They showed actual gameplay during TGS.
You even play Ethan again
@tatsumi I like that Ethan has his own style of games.
I am a huge Resident Evil fan but VII, although good, is so different, I prefer the third-person view and the characters of the classic games. I'm disappointed to see that VIII is VII's sequel... Don't get me wrong, I bought the Steelbook Edition and the Gold Edition digitally.
It's gonna be a while yet before I get either next gen console, so I'll be perfectly happy with it if the next RE does come to PS4 and Xbone. I just wanna play the game and I know it would look great on current consoles, so bring it on.
