Earlier this week, Microsoft confirmed that its backwards compatible games - including Xbox One games - would "play better" on Xbox Series X due to a variety of potential enhancements.
Following this, Sea of Thieves executive producer Joe Neate confirmed on Twitter that the game "is going to be benefitting," but revealed that specific details will be coming later:
"The [Xbox] team across in Redmond are doing an incredible job, as they always do. And no, we’re not telling you how Sea of Thieves is going to be benefitting yet, but this article gives some clues..."
The Xbox Wire article noted that backwards compatible games on Xbox Series X can take advantage of automatic HDR, Quick Resume and much more, and there's also the potential for resolution and frame rate boosts for certain titles.
Sea of Thieves already boasts 4K HDR support via Xbox One X enhancements, but it currently only runs at 30 frames per-second on the system. Will it be boosted to 60fps on Xbox Series X? Hopefully we'll find out soon.
How would you like to see Sea of Thieves enhanced on Xbox Series X? Let us know in the comments.

I'm thinking a bump to 60fps is definitely in the works, and maybe even a ray-traced option at 30fps. Those waves will look even more glorious! 😍
This is a game that is really awesome if:
a. you play alone and are careful
b. you play with friends
In my opinion it's also the game with the best graphics of the generation, especially in HDR. 60 FPS is the best upgrade that a 30 FPS game could get so if it gets that on Series X then I can't ask for more.
I still need to check this game out.
@BlueOcean So it's worth playing if you're on your own? I've been quite intrigued by it but thought it was only really enjoyable as a multiplayer game.
Its not a game that appeals to me - even with any Series X enhancements. I don't know what the exact XB1X specs are - does it run at a native 4k or is it using some reconstruction technique to achieve a 4k image? No doubt if it uses some dynamic resolution scaling, on Series X that could be eliminated entirely...
Doubling the frame rate does seem like a logical step but the jump up in GPU power could offer more than just that. The GPU obviously has half the time to render a frame but RDNA2 is also more efficient so should still have resources to do 'more' - maybe have some ray traced effects - reflections maybe?
Of course they could opt for an even higher frame rate - up to 120fps with the much more capable and faster CPU too. It will be interesting to see how these current gen games are enhanced on next gen hardware
@ShaiHulud Yes, you can enjoy it on your own. If you are lucky you might find another lonely player that is nice and become friends. I started playing when it was a beta and there was not a single thing in the game to teach you but now you have a nice tutorial, Maiden Voyage. Controls and gameplay are explained now, when I started playing they weren't. Any of them.
I can't play now because I don't have my console here and my laptop wouldn't run this game. Play the tutorial and then choose the smallest ship, the sloop. If you leave the crew open in Settings another lonely player will join you. If you leave the crew closed you will be on your own but you might find another lonely sailor and if his intentions are peaceful you could form an alliance. This means that the treasure and progress you make will be his too and vice versa. Now that there is a separate mode called Adventure, you will find more friendly people there than when there was only one mode. The other mode is Arena (battle).
And this, my friend, is the best way to start playing Sea of Thieves.
@BlueOcean thanks for your tips 👍 I also haven’t played this yet, put off by the fact that I’d rather play alone. Having read your reply, and the fact that it’s on game pass, I will give it a go. Thanks
@KelticDevil Give it a try.
@Nightcrawler71 You are welcome. I'm glad I could help.
@BAMozzy
SoT is native 4K 30fps on the X.
@gingataisen That's right, it's native 4K.
@gingataisen In that case, it should be easy to hit at least 60fps and still have scope to do more. I don't know how all the graphical settings may be set - whether or not they are at the maximum possible - but they could have room to increase those, increase the LoD distance and draw distances for example - turn the settings up to Ultra.
Point is, that just boosting the frame rate to 60fps probably won't be pushing the hardware at all and could well have a lot of overhead left over to do a lot more. Its not always advantageous to put LoD's up to Ultra settings - not use lower polygon count models and lower quality textures on objects that are so far off in the distance that the visual difference is not noticeable - even if they can and still run the game at 60fps. It may be better to use the resources to add Ray Traced reflections for example but in doing so but limit the game to 60fps or maybe keep the same settings and go for 120fps...
Just because the GPU is more than 2x as powerful (numerically) it could be more like 3x due to being able to do a LOT more per Teraflop than the XB1X so doubling the frame rate may well be just the 'tip' of the enhancements possible...
@BAMozzy
They may use that overhead for a very densely populated pirate town (think Port Royale). 🙌
@gingataisen Maybe - but I think a certain amount of parity will limit what they do. No point over populating an area that only Series X owners and high end PC gamers can actually access when the game will be played on xCloud and base XB1 consoles too. As its also a multi-player, you need areas that everyone has access to and ultimately the 'same' - even if visually or performance is different
@BlueOcean Thanks for the info!
