Xbox One S

It's hard to believe the Xbox One first came out nearly seven years ago. In that time, it's developed quite the library of games, including some superb exclusives, and we've picked out ten of the best below. We'll be adding more to this list in the future, but for now, here are some absolute must-plays on Xbox One, which of course can also be played on the new Xbox Series X with better performance.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey (Xbox One)

Undoubtedly the most ambitious Assassin's Creed title to date, Odyssey sees you play as siblings Alexios or Kassandra throughout the Peloponnesian War in Ancient Greece. The game places a far greater focus on RPG elements than previous entries in the series (even Origins), and the story is fantastic, while the combat is packed with more depth than ever before. If you haven't played an Assassin's Creed game in a while, this is the one to return to.

Forza Horizon 4 (Xbox One)

The fourth iteration in the Forza Horizon series takes place in a fictionalised version of Great Britain, featuring areas based around Edinburgh, the Lake District, the Cotswolds and more. It's packed with vehicles — there are over 550 cars to race in the game — and a massive host of features and game modes to ensure you'll never get bored. Plus, there's the addition of seasons, which provides four different versions of the map based on the time of year, and there's even a LEGO focused DLC for afters.

Gears 5 (Xbox One)

The latest entry in the Gears of War series sees Kate Diaz take centre stage. The campaign is a blast, featuring a dramatic story with some fantastic set pieces, while the multiplayer proves as popular as ever, introducing new modes such as Escape and Arcade. It also tinkers with plenty of new ideas, such as integrating open-world environments into the campaign, and while some work better than others, this is still very much the Gears you know and love.

Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox One)

It's fair to say our collective jaws hit the floor following the release of GTA V back in 2013. The Rockstar Games masterpiece received a next-gen makeover a year later on Xbox One, and instantly became one of the best games on the console. The single-player campaign, which follows the lives of crime fanatics Trevor, Michael and Franklin is filled with highly memorable missions, while GTA Online continues to receive regular updates, still proving one of the best multiplayer experiences on Xbox One.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection (Xbox One)

Halo: The Master Chief Collection got off to a rocky start back in 2014, suffering horrendous issues with online matchmaking. These days, those issues are a thing of the past, allowing you to relive Halo 1-4's classic multiplayer gameplay all over again. Halo: The Master Chief Collection also includes the story campaigns for all of those games, complete with a visual overhaul for Halo 2, while the recent (free) addition of Halo: Reach proves the icing on the cake.
