@LtSarge i really enjoyed the first one. The changes in level design was superb compared to a lot of games I've played and it was an OG Xbox title. I'm really looking forward to seeing what they did in the sequel
@dmcc0 Yeah I mean, if you take away the collecting aspect then there's very little left. So I get why the game doesn't appeal to you. But I think it's great that you gave it a go at the very least! Nothing lost since you played it through Game Pass.
@K1LLEGAL Interesting that you liked DK64 that much! So many people I've talked with have all said that DK64 goes a bit overboard in terms of collectibles and I tend to agree haha. But maybe that's why it's the king of collectathons.
@Krzzystuff Yeah that's actually one thing that I love about the Psychonauts games and it's that they don't abide by a rigorous formula with their levels. They can be designed in so many different ways and don't have to offer the exact same things the previous levels did. They're all about keeping the player guessing what the next level is going to be like and then surprise them with something totally unexpected. I love it!
I just wanted to apologise for not properly keeping up all of your posts about this month's game. Just been having a bit of a weird couple of weeks so haven't had much time to dedicate to the game or contribute to the conversation.
I have been reading all your posts though and all of your thoughts are very interesting!!
I think I had just got to the bit where you meet up with your family again out in the woods before I dropped off it. Just having a little break for a while because I felt like I was jumping from one game club game to the next and needed play some more mindless games/do stuff I don't have to think about as much. Hopefully I'll get back on the Raz-wagon next week at some point!
Finished Psychonauts 2 last night. Yeah, it’s GOTY for me, it’s just the single most enjoyable, repeatedly inventive game I’ve played in so so long. And for everything to wrap with such an enjoyable and well developed story. And those songs are just constantly rolling around my head now (even left the credits on until the MASSIVE backers list). Well happy. (May go catch up and see what The Ascent is like now…)
So after finishing Psy 2 I decided to restart the OG from scratch and I have now finished it. It is a bit more obtuse in certain levels and the platforming does not hold in the final level (struggled a lot in both the rail and the platforming over water rising) but I had fun with it. I am ready for the next game on the series!
I finished the casino and just started the next level. I'll see if i get pulled into going back for all the collectibles to get the 1K GS or if I'll just do what I can and move on from there.
@Bmartin001 heya, Wana be added to the tag list or are you just dropping in for some Psychonauts 2 discussion? Either's fine! Just thought I'd ask if you Wana be on the taglist!
Played a bit more today. I got about 6 achievements pop really quickly as I wrapped up most of the sidequests and spent my hoarded psitanium in the shop. Bit mad really, I normally like to eek out the achievements! It's ok though, just need to finish this game lol. I've been concentrating on the side stuff and I haven't even given the bees to that hermit guy
I don't think I'll be finishing Psychonauts 2 this month. I stopped playing right after the graveyard level so I think I'm 70-80% through the game but my Game Pass ran out before I could finish it. And right now all my time is used up by going through backlog games as well as watching Game of Thrones, lol. So I don't feel like subscribing to Game Pass anytime soon, but I will join next month when we play The Evil Within as I have that game physically on PS4.
Sorry for radio silence recently, I'm not really playing my Xbox much, just don't seem to be that interested at the moment.
Keep me on the tag list and I'll keep an eye on the threads to see what's what.
@Bmartin001 nope, not stupid at all! It's just a list of usernames with @ symbols that I copy and paste into a new post every month (sometimes 2 or 3 times in a month). The people get a notification to say there's a new post in this thread. Normally the posts say what the current month's game is and also give a list of games for people to vote for to choose next month's game. A second and less likely a third post would be used to nudge people to vote if there hasn't been many votes so far.
I normally ask if people want to join it or leave it because I don't want to spam people with notifications that they haven't consented to!
@The_New_Butler some nice well explained thoughts on the game there! I'm still quite early on in the game so I appreciate the lack of spoilers. I'm not sure what I'm going to think when all is said and done. I like the original and I like this game. They aren't the best games ever but I am enjoying them enough to see them through and neither have been a chore. They are still up there in the top 5 or so of game club games we've picked over the last year and a half though. I do find it hard to place brand new games though. Unless it is an immediately amazing experience which is rare but not unheard of, it takes some time after I've beat them for it to all sink in before I can order my feelings on it, if I do at all!
Only a week left now until we start up The Evil Within! Really excited to play this game now after having been completely absorbed by the Resident Evil series the past few months and having not played a survival horror game for a couple of weeks now. It's going to be interesting to see how this game compares to the RE titles.
On a side note, I'm hoping there will be a Halloween sale in October on the PS Store where the season pass for The Evil Within is discounted. Considering how long the main game is, it's going to take me a while to get through it anyway, so hopefully in the meantime, the season pass will show up in a sale. Not that the pricing will stop me from getting it since it's only €10, but seeing as how a lot of DLC gets discounted these days I'm hoping the same will occur for this one.
Finally managed to make some more progress in Psychonauts 2 today. I don't know why I had so much trouble motivating myself to play. Seems to be a recurring theme for me this month.
Anyway, I'm at the not-so-much-of-a point-of-no-return and I've gone back and mopped up all the collectibles I can get in the hub areas without getting the final Psy power. I'll probably mop up all the mental worlds that I can as well. I had to look up what the final power was as the game seems to do the opposite of the original game in its use of a point of no return. I think at least one mental world I've already visited requires the final power to complete. Not sure about the others. Will probably use a guide to get the last few figments in them.
Sorry works a bit hectic for the next week or so. I'll update the thread title/do the new intro for The Evil within and set up the votes within the next few days.
Still plugging away at Psychonauts 2 atm. Got the endgame and postgame to do!
I just played through an hour of The Evil Within and so far the game seems promising enough. The first chapter reminded me a lot of Outlast and for a moment I thought that that's how the game was going to be like, lol. But afterwards, it started becoming more like Resident Evil.
There are a lot of things that I appreciate this game doing compared to the older RE titles. For starters, there's auto-saving so after each section, there will be a checkpoint, which is great to see. You can also save manually from time to time. Moreover, managing your health isn't as much of an issue in this game compared to Resi as you'll regain health automatically by standing still for a brief period of time. Further, aiming feels kinda like The Last of Us, i.e. it's intentionally wonky for that "survival horror experience". And finally, the game puts a much larger emphasis on stealth than the RE series. You'll be sneaking up behind enemies, shiv them and they're dead. You'll rarely be using your gun unless you get spotted all the time.
So yeah, the gameplay isn't anything mind-blowing but so far it's a fairly solid horror experience.
