@LtSarge ah fair enough. I'm somewhat surprised it's so short. The earlier ones could be done in a few hours but they could be tough at parts, especially in your first runs through the game so the difficulty extended that into 5-6 hours on occasion.

Except Streets of Rage 3. I played that for the first time this year and it took me like 3 hours to beat the final boss and that weird flashing countdown nearly wrecked my monitor with burn in! 😅

@Balta666 I'm 5-6 hours in and I still find the combat to a bit janky, especially when you try to dodge out of the way. The dodging just doesn't feel as responsive as I would've liked it to be. The game is also pretty difficult overall so that could be contributing to the overall jankiness.

I'm just exploring the motherlobe before I go up to intern training or whatever it's called. I am somewhat surprised that Sasha Nein is depicted smoking. Apparently he smokes in the first game according to my Google search but I don't think I noticed it or at least it didn't stand out.

I duno, it's weird seeing anyone smoking in a kid's game. At least in the UK. On our TV and I think even in films, there are tight restrictions on depicting smoking in programming aimed at children. So it's something I barely see unless it's an old programme or something with an exclusively adult audience which is probably why it stands out to me in this game.

Finished two more levels today in Psychonauts 2 and man they're really getting creative now. Each one feels incredibly unique and different. I've said before that this game reminds me of Super Mario Galaxy and it did once again with one of these levels. In the first SMG, there are these motion-controlled levels and in one of them, Mario rides on a glass ball with a star in it and you control him with the Wii remote. The level I just did was exactly that, except without the motion controls, which was really cool!

@Balta666 Yeah if I have one complaint about this game so far it's that they introduce the open world aspect all at once instead of doing it in two parts, i.e. the quarry first and then the camping area after you've finished several missions. But yeah, the first game was like this as well and I guess there's a reason for it that I'm just not seeing. I'm also heading to that level next, really excited to see what it's going to be like!

Hi all,

This month's (September) game is the brand spanking new Psychonauts 2. Available to download from game pass now. I know some of us have started it already. I've made some progress in it and I am liking it so far.

I'd put up some HLTB stats for this one but I reckon they will be skewed by lack of data/only preliminary data being available.

Halloween is coming up in October so it is time for a spooky game 👻🤡👽🤖🎃😈☠️🧟🧛.

We were going to go with Evil Within but Sarge rightly pointed out that we have some new members so perhaps we should put it to the vote. The following are all available on game pass.

The Evil Within
Alien Isolation
Dead Space
Doom 3

I was going to suggest some previous Games with Gold like Maid of Sker and Little Nightmares but they look a little on the short side at under 5 hours a piece. There's a few other horror-y looking games on my GwG list too like The Raven Remastered and Call of Cthulhu and Styx: Shards of Darkness. Feel free to chuck in a vote for any of those if they take your fancy.

Likewise, the first Outlast game and it's DLC are on sale for £2.99 on the MS store at the moment so that could be an option too. The second game is on game pass.

I am 9 hours into Psychonauts 2 on Series X and I can’t wait to carry on playing it. I never played the first one, though I did watch the re-cap at the beginning of the game which was… thorough but confusing! And then the opening scenes were a but confusing but once everything becomes clear it is sooo good.

I am impressed with the cast of characters, the voice acting and how smooth the gameplay feels. But also the story, it’s pretty interesting! Though I cannot tell how far I am through the game. Loving the collectibles too - but I grew up on N64 collectathons I guess but yea best 3D platformer since Odyssey easily.

I think after having played a lot of Resident Evil recently, I'm interested to see how The Evil Within fares compared to that series considering both were created by the same person, Shinji Mikami. So I'm willing to give that game a go in October. I'm not feeling Alien Isolation quite yet, I've already played Dead Space and I still need to finish DOOM 64 before getting around to 3. So out of those four, I'll be voting for The Evil Within.

I know you @ralphdibny said that you haven't played the first Outlast game yet and that these are short titles. But maybe we could play through all of them during October? The first game is 4-5 hours, its DLC is around 2 hours and Outlast 2 is 7-8 hours according to HLTB. Or people can simply choose which games they want to play, kinda like when we did Alan Wake month and we decided to play through the base game, its DLCs and American Nightmare. Either way, I personally think Outlast is one of the greatest and most influential horror games from the past decade and all horror fans should experience it. So I wouldn't mind having the Outlast games for October, even though I'll be only playing Outlast 2 since I've already finished the first game.

So to summarise, I'm voting for The Evil Within and The Outlast games.

Seconded - only got so far for Outlast, and have never played Evil Within, so happy out with either of them....

As far as Psychonauts2 goes, it may be the game I've most enjoyed actually playing since the original Arkham Asylum game (apart from the slightly off combat, which has deffo improved over the first, but is also strangely why Arkham is SO much fun).

I finished a certain level yesterday, and it may be my favourite level in a game for many/many a moon - just pure joy for me, and something that is very centre to one of my favourite things to do. and 100 other things that I can't go into due to spoilers. But yeah - big stoopid grin on my face all last night.

AND it looks STUNNING - and the music is amazing. And it's funny as......

I'll stop now

@ralphdibny Many thanks. I'll try and get to this one after playing #1

I think the HLTB for Psychonauts 2 already has 30+ entries so it's probably a fairly good rough guide
https://howlongtobeat.com/game?id=61442

  • Main story = 12h 43m
  • Main + Extras = 18h 19m
  • Completionsist = 24h 48m
  • All Playstyles = 18h 38m

Still in two minds whether to play Psychonauts 2 as the first one wasn't for me - might just concentrate on finally getting Xenoblade finished on Switch instead during Sept.

As for October, Evil Within and Alien Isolation seem a little on the long side (15.5 and 18 hours respectively according to HLTB) so either Dead Space or Doom would get my vote.

Not so keen on the GwG suggestions though as not everyone will have those, especially noobs like me that only have Little Nightmares from that list!

As for next month... That's much tougher! Horror not usually my cup of tea... yet I've played many of them.

Styx: Shards of Darkness - Probably top of my list. I liked the first one, though it's a niche stealth game so likely won't get many votes.

As for replays I would be most interested in Dead Space or Doom 3. Alien Isolation with the 60fps patch is also of interest but I also remember it being a game that dragged on for far too long.

Little Nightmares and the brilliant DLC is WELL WORTH a play for anyone who hasn't done so, but as I played it recently not interested in a replay right now. But it's fresh enough I could easily comment.

Hard bounced off The Evil Within when I gave it a go.

Hadn't previously heard of Maid of Sker, The Raven Remastered or Call of Cthulhu, some research shows they're all about 60-70 metacritic and likely all a bit niche for me.

Outlast I started on PS4 but never got far, but I did enjoy what I played so that's got a shot.

I vote for Styx: Shards of Darkness or Outlast

I honestly don’t mind out of those games listed, Evil Within and Dead Space I’ve finished out of them, Alien Isolation I wasn’t really into. So I guess my vote would technically go to Doom 3 but I’m only on Doom II and would like to finish that and 64 first! So basically no votes for me 😂

Looking forward to Psychonauts 2 though, I’m skint af until next month so had to let my Game Pass sub end for now but I’ll be able to renew soon. Except by that point I’ll be back at uni for my final year and so I’ll have way less time!

So I just finished the part where you have to repair Ford's mind and right now I have no idea what's going to happen next! I'm actually quite uncertain how much left there is of this game since I've played it for about 15-16 hours and that seems to be when a lot of people are finishing it. But it seems weird considering I still don't have a couple PSI powers in my arsenal, so it feels like there should still be some more levels to do before the end. Hopefully there are since I'm seriously loving this game.

On a side note, I think this game is the perfect example of a platformer where you can use anything as the theme for a level. You don't need the bog-standard grass level, water level, ice level, desert level and so on that you constantly see in Mario games. Psychonauts 2 perfectly demonstrates that as long as you're creative, you can make any kind of level. It just shows how lazy Nintendo has been with Mario games when you have these insanely creative levels in Psychonauts. They should honestly let Tim Schafer and the rest of DoubleFine design the next Mario game, lol.
